Should parents be able to smack children in discipline
Betsyjane replied to flabuless's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hmm. There's a difference between legislating about smacking or about "disciplining in any other way". I believe that children don't learn the right think by being hit. I think they learn to be ashamed, afraid, and sneaky. I believe logical consequences can help a child learn while not hurting self esteem. But I think legislation should be reserved for child abuse, and I wouldn't consider spanking to be child abuse, just poorer parenting. -

I've never had Activia, but it sounds like a nice change from protein shakes. By the way, I finally got off those lucious Muscle Milk shakes and onto Slim Fast Carb Control. As much as I loved those Muscle Milks, the Slim Fast really did seem to have all the right stuff in the right proportions.... Think I'll pick some up on grocery day Thursday. Anybody else have favorite something or others? I'm not looking for snacks....just nonsolid breakfasts and real solid other meals. Can't do TV dinners (whatever they are called in the 21st century). Too processed tasting for me. Unless it's a good old high fat Stouffers........Ah, remember the good old days of eating like a porker? OK. Here's a weird tip. One of the dog boarders is an MD who does all the aesthetic stuff....botox etc. She says cocoa butter or something similar and also light massage in the shower will help the belly skin shrink. I'm gonna go to work on my moose lip. -
Oh dear! I do think the band can get tight from illness, especially one that causes inflammation anyway. Sounds like you are doing everything you can to keep going. do you need a bit of an unfill until you feel better? Would a protein bar work...the chocolate kind that kind of melt as you chew them? Feel better soon!

Good grief! Have been doing so well, and then today I have been drinking high calorie protein shakes all day...sort of liquid grazing. I cannot figure out why....I must be subconsciously bored or something! Ah, well. Tomorrow is another day. Fiddledeedee.

Interesting. 5 protein shakes a day....with Slimfast Low Carb, that would be 950 calories, 100 grams of protein, 30g carbs, 45g fat, 1300g sodium. Plus whatever food you eat. So basically, you eat every hour in the order of water-shake-food. Have you tried it yet? -

Oh Boo! You poor thing. Well, at least you can blame phlegm and assorted bodily fluids for your 2 pound gain! Take care of yourself. You were sure a trooper yesterday at dinner! Remember that old point system where you rate the good and bad things that have happened to you recently...I think it was called the Life Change Index, and if you had very many points, you were at risk for getting sick? I'll bet a band, starting Jazzercise and seeing your son would give you enough points to have been at risk....We probably all are in that category. I think I also remember a thread about increased risk of pneumonia with the band, but I don't remember why.... -

I was reading this article about how bandsters can get over plateaus. This guy says basically either cut carbs or do alot of exercise. (I remember Spivak telling me that I should only eat carbs if I'm training for a marathon.) Anyway, he says any sugars, fruit, pastas will slow down weight loss. And he says any snacking on anything will slow weight loss. And after the first year of banding, you are SOL without exercise. He also says anything except meat and veges will raise your blood sugar to some extent, leaving you hungry 2-3 hours later. Oy. -

Ha! He can't be too thrilled to see me with my bill for $2.95. OK. It's 5:30 unless we hear from someone that that doesn't work. Why did we meet the 4th Monday this month? I don't recall. So it's semi-official. First and third Mondays at 5:30PM at La Villa in Atascocita. Dates: 4/2, 4/16 5/7, 5/21 6/4, 6/18 7/2, 7/16 8/6, 8/20 -

Ha! I ate 2 bites of leftover fish, and that settled me for the evening....except for 2 popsicles later. How about you? -
Ya know, you hear a half cup, a cup, a cup and a half. You hear nothing through a straw, straws are OK, protein powder is fine...no, only the liquid shakes. Shakes OK-no liquid calories. I really think it didn't make sense to me until I had enough months of feeding myself with this band and knowing what works for me...and that what works for me changes alot! I was at my Dr's support group meeting and the 3 people who were role models for us eat 600 calories a day. I think I would die! all I can say is that I eat less volume now than I used to because I'm more sensitive to what it feels like to be full, and because I'm losing interest in food....sometimes.

That was fun! From now on we'll be meeting at La Villa the first and third Monday of each month, and not at Humble City Cafe. Er, I'm confused on times. 5:30? 6:00? What do we need to do? I can do anything as long as it's not so late I'm sleepy! -

I think it's just past the intersection of 1960 and Pinehurst. We'll be at a table in the front. One or two guys and 3 or 4 women would be best guess. I'll take my blank sign for the table...so if you are sensitive about being "outed", we won't.... I'm hoping I stay awake long enough to be there. I'm fading fast after my trip! -
Well, I never thought I'd be back at McDonalds, but if I'm in a hurry in the morning and going to (gasp) eat in the car, I drive through and order scrambled eggs. Suits me just fine. Any other acceptable fast food out there?

Wow are you losing weight!!!! Woo hoo! If you're coming up FM2100, go through Crsoby and Huffman to FM1960 and turn left. Go over the lake (Lake Houston) and it's on the left. Can somebody else think of what the landmarks are getting to La Villa? We'll be there at 5:30. -
I have never had a fill by Spivak himself. Joy at the Surgicenter does them, and she's great! The first time, she said that the numbing shot hurts more than the fill, so I didn't have it, and it was fine. It feels like a shot and once the needle is in, I don't feel it. I also didn't have restriction until my third fill....and if you don't., be sure to go back for more! My third fill is a dream......
-
Are you hungry? Do you need a fill? Are you drinking liquid calories instead of solids? Frankly, your weight loss has been really good...Could be your body is just trying to adjust..... How do you think you're doing with the bandster lifestyle?
-
Just the barium swallow and fluoroscope during the fill should catch it. I am happy to say that after 3 days of liquids, everything is back to normal. I'm now pretty well convinced that being so tight in the mornings, I probably had liquid just sitting in the pouch waiting to go down. It put the fear of God in me though. Now I'm finding that if I think I've had a few mouthfuls too many, I automatically return to liquids for the next meal in case I stretched the pouch. I'm sure it's overkill, but it's happening naturally. I'm also sipping liquids slowly if I'm really restricted in the mornings..

You guys will get a kick out of this. This weekend I drove my Mom to her best friend's birthday party in another state. Mom is 90. I was getting tired on the drive up, so I put my ipod shuffle on...It's all my upbeat workout music. Mom wanted to hear what it sounded like, so she put it on and was surprised that I had a lap band song on there. What? A lap band song? Mom doesn't hear well. So she started singing it in that overly loud off key way that we all sing when we have headphones on.... it was Donna Summers...."Lap band. Lap band for loooove. Yes it's my lap band lap band toniiiiight....."<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Well, after my pouch dilation...which I am now convinced was due to having a bit too much restriction in the mornings, and food and liquids just sitting there waiting to go down.....I can definitely say that going on liquids for a few days set everything straight. I feel great. Meals are the quantity they should be. It put the fear of God in me, though. It's a funny thing. Now, when I eat what I think is a bite or 2 too much, I go to liquids for the next meal in case I stretched to pouch. It's overkill, I'm sure, but it's just happening naturally. Sort of like eating high calorie food and then automatically knowing I have to go to the gym and work it off. (That last part isn't happening yet, but I'm working on it.) I survived the birthday party with catered food, and felt comfortable. And lost a pound in those 4 days. The other benefit to the stretched pouch thing is that since whatzername told me that after around 8 months, you being to not even think much about eating because it's lost its interest and "I've developed new hobbies". She was telling me that this concentration on all things bandster kind of fades and becomes much more natural. I believe it. I get little glimpses of it. I'm looking for those times now. And finally, the bandsters at goal weight who eat around 600 calories a day? Although I eat many more calories than that, hearing that helped me to think differently about calories and I think my calorie intake has gone down a little as a result. All in all, having had a pouch dilation was probably just what I needed..... -

That's great on the recovery, Barbara! I'm back from KC. What a hoot. 85 people at a 90 year old's birthday party, all ages, but quite a few were school mates from my mother's high school! A bunch of healthy bright 90 year olds, looking like a Dove Pro-Age ad! What great fun. And my mother was the surprise guest, attending the 90th birthday party of her best friend of 80 years. They don't make better memories than that. You guys will get a kick out of this. I was getting tired on the drive up, so I put my ipod shuffle on...It's all my upbeat workout music. kjojojr: You do sound too tight. If it's just inflammation, it'll be gone by now. The only thing I know about getting anything down atoo tight band is to drink your liquids HOT. Let us know what they say.....

Can I smoke after surgery / Why YES I CAN!!
Betsyjane replied to jubjub's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Natural substances still cause harm when they cause smoke to get in your lungs... and with the natural stuff, you work on even HOLDING the smoke in there! They also give you the munchies which might be a definite problem with a band. And...when you need to work hard at exercising to round out this new healthy you, how much lung capacity and motivation will you have? -
One week so why am I so hungry??

Been there. done the same thing. Above all, don't kick yourself. Just practice living like a bandster as much as possible. You'll get there..... A fill is a wonderful thing. -

I just got a post from Poodles who says that if the band is too tight, even water can back up and stretch the pouch. I wonder if my morning shake when I felt restricted was contributing. I know I was drinking and not sipping. Who knows.
