January Bandsters???

I thought I would share the Ten Commandments of Lap Band with everyone - I found this on another website.... 1. Thou shalt consume thy protein first, followed by thy veggies and fruits. If thou, then hast any room left thou shalt comusme thy carbs lastly! 2. Thou shalt take the tiniest of bites, placing thy fork and thy spoon upon thine table, that thou shalt have more time between bites to savor that which thou hast eaten, and allow thy stomach adequate time to inform thy brain of thine fullness. 3. Thou shalt chew and chew and when thou has done so, thou shalt chew some more, lest thy band rise up and smite thee, causing in thy chest great pain, and spewing forth. 4. Thou shalt drink of thy water, copiously, consuming all that has been recommended to thee, that thou mayest be spared the pangs of hunger and dehydration, and thou shalt thus, also keep thy kidneys well flushed, that thou shalt not develop stones to aggrieve thee. 5. Thou shalt exercise in a manner that thou mayest choose, of thine own accord, providing that thou art faithful to thine execise regimen, that thou shalt not falter on thy journey to thine smaller self. 6. Thou shalt honor thy band and maintain it well, that it shalt be a steadfast friend to thee throughout thine entire life. Thou wilt, from time to time, as thou hast been told, obtain for it the fills that it needest that it may then help thee in thy hours of need, keeping it always in perfect adjustment for thine benefit. 7. Thou shalt not worry and gnash thy teeth, becoming aggrieved at those times when thy losses seemingly stop and thy weight remaineth constant, remembering then that thou tookest long to acquire thine pounds, and that thy pounds must then take time for loss. 8. Thou shalt maintain a log or dairy of thine measurements, that thou mayest truly perceive the effect of they band when thine scale doth pause in it's downward progress. 9. Thou shalt join into and participate within thy local support community, for without the input, experience and love of they fellow bandsters, thou shalt have a much more difficult time in thy journey, and when thou art well upon thy road, thou shalt then likewise assist those who followest in thine footsteps that they too might be successful in their own diminishment. 10. Thou shalt beware of thine " soft caolries syndrome", keeping always in thy mind that thou canst thus sabotage thine efforts and thine investment and lead thee then therefore into depression and guilt. As once stated "Just because thou canst, it meaneth not that thou shouldith".

January Bandsters???

I am fitting into clothes that I wore 20lbs lighter! So - I'm a firm believer in taking the measurements and judging off that instead of the scales. I will be one month post op on Sunday, I plan on taking my measurements again (I took them before surgery) and see the amount of inches I lost. I am excited to check them out.

January Bandsters???

I'm getting an ipod too! We will probably get it next week. A workout challenge sounds great - although I can't lift weights yet, but I'm ready to pump up my exercising!

Welcome to the January Band Crew!
7. I was banded 1/18/07 - just a day before you! Congratulations, your doing great!
8. It looks like you need more Protein. That will help curb the hunger. Your eating too soft of foods right now, the eggs, cottage cheese, can easily go thru the band. Can you eat chicken, moist chicken? Fish? Even some tender roast, tuna? Get a little more "bulk" in your diet.

So when do I get unhungry?

Hello Pamela, glad to meet another okie! I've heard wonderful stuf about Dr. Ortiz, I recently bought his book off Amazon, I can't wait to read it. Yes, the smell of food can get to you, and its hard to cope with, but the longer you have the band, the easier it will get. Congratulations on your band! I get to have real food tomorrow!

January Bandsters???

I'm reading my doctor's food brochure right now, here is what they say on food getting stuck: 1) Try relaxing and take deep breaths 2) Walking around will help also If it has not pass after a few minutes, use the following to help: Mix 1/2 teaspoon of meat tenderizer, 1 oz water, and 1 tsp lemon juice, mix well and sip. This will assist in reductin the size of the object and should clear the opening. So, there you have it, a remedy for stuck food. Usually when you have food stuck, you have a really tight feeling in your chest area, are you feeling that? Let us know how the meat tenderizer works.

What to tell co-workers?

ovarian cyst is a good idea. I told mine I had to have a hernia repair, which I did at the same time I was getting my lap-band.
12. refried beans - yum, been living off of these poached egg malt o meal - with a little splenda and ff milk
13. What you have is ketosis breath, its wonderful to be in ketosis. That is when your body starts using your stored fat to burn the calories/energy. I'm here to tell you, nothing you can do will take the nasty taste out, unless you go out of ketosis (eat more carbs). However, I've noticed it usually only last about 4 to 6 weeks, then it gets better. Here is an article about it: http://www.biblelife.org/ketosis.htm

January Bandsters???

I was at a standstill for about a week, then lost some more. It does concern me a little, but I really think the body has a lot of adjusting to do when you first get the band. After the fills begin, I believe the weight loss us a little easier. I do think you might want to watch your calories on fitday.com, its free. That way you can see how many calories your eating. I also think you can switch up your calories to keep your body guessing, and keep it losing. Exercise is also important. I firmly believe that. Even just walking.

January Bandsters???

Did you do an upper GI before the band? If so, I believe its the same stuff you drink for that.

So when do I get unhungry?

Hunger is going to happen with the band, its natural to be hungry. However, when you eat a little, it takes the hunger away for 4 or more hours. That is the key, if your not hungry for 4 or 5 hours, the band is working, the fill is the right amount.

Mother is sick every night

Instead of having the band removed, she could have it unfilled for now while she deals with her issues. Stress can cause the band to tighten up, so I think she needs to have some counseling with her grief. I am so sorry for you and your mother's loss.

Drinking whilst eating

I follow the band rules to a "T". I do not drink while eating, I wait 1 hour before drinking after I eat. But, to stop the questions from everyone when I go out with a group, I order a glass of Water. They don't ever notice that I don't drink it.

* Sausage Egg Muffins * <O:p</O:p1 pound turkey sausage (browned, crumbled, and drained) 4 eggs 1/2 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup Atkins Bake Mix or Soy Flour 1 cup grated cheddar cheese Beat together eggs, cream and bake mix. Stir in sausage and cheese. Spray non-stick muffin cups with Pam. Divide batter evenly into 12 muffin cups. Bake in preheated 350 oven for 20-25 minutes, they will brown slightly on top. You can add a little salt & pepper if you desire to the egg mixture, or diced onions. Makes 12 muffins -- 1.7 carbs each. I thought I would share the recipe with you, its a great on the run breakfast treat. I haven't tried it yet with the band, but I used to eat them all the time doing Low Carb. I added picante sauce to it when I ate them, which I think would be great with the band because it lubes the food for you.

January Bandsters???

Terry - thanks so much for sharing the fill experience. I have been wondering if I should get a fill too. I still only eat 1/2 cup of food, however, I find myself getting hungry around 2 hours later. But I use my will power and hold off until around 4 hours. It just amazes me how little I eat. Last night for dinner, I ate my chocolate SF pudding with a scoop of protein powder mixed in it at around 5:30. Then I was hungry around 8:30, so I made some instant mashed potatoes, and took one bite, and then spit them out, they were nasty. So, that ruined my appetite. LOL. Well, I hope everyone is doing great, sounds like everyone is.
23. Congratulations Jason! We all look forward to your future post and your progress with the band!
24. Johna, Let me tell you a little about my process. I attended my fist meeting 11/13/06 (the seminar with Dr. G), they called me the following Tuesday - the meeting was on a Saturday. I made my appointment for 11/22/07 - this is where they weigh you and I had to pay $200 for the "processing fee". This fee is not covered by insurance and it is non refundable. They submitted my paperwork to UHC and told me it would take 30 days to find out. Well, I soon found out 12/07/06 that I was approved. I have the similar insurance as you, I have UHC/Choice plus 90/10, with a maximum out of pocket of $1,000. The doctors office called me around 12/10/06 to find out when I wanted the surgery, They could get me in that month, however, I chose to wait until January because I was getting more money added onto my flexable spending account, and wanted to use that money so I wouldn't have to pay anything out of pocket. So I am the one that chose 1/18/07. The process was very fast for me. I started making all my appointments for the first of January - you can read more in my journal if you like - my journal link is at the bottom of my signature - under my ticker. I list everything I've had to pay out of pocket, my appointments I had to attend etc. I do like Dr. G and his experience, his bedside manner is not the best, but his knowledge is superb. I've herd Dr. Fisher's bedside manner and his nurse are awesome, so whoever you chose, you can't go wrong. I am going to PM you some advice on your BMI.

Well, I know you are on pins & needles, so hang in there! In the meantime, practice eating the bandster way. I practiced my chewing - its hard to get used to, so the more practice the easier. Also, the no drinking while eating. Welcome!
