As of today I'm pre-surgical. I've been thinking of getting a bariatric procedure done for over five years now but I finally decided I'm ready. My "I'm ready" moment has been a collection of things that have led me to believe that obesity can, if severe enough, be a disability. Of course there are the uncomfortable moments where you can just barely fit into your seat on an airplane and when you can get the belt bucked, it hurts as it bites into you. There are the times when you realize that you're the chunkiest Dad at the football game. And then there are times when you realize that you just can't participate in the sports that you'd like to with your own child.A few years ago we went as a family to Myrtle Beach, SC. It was a nice trip. Fun, good sun, and a short little trip to the go cart park to race around with my son. The problem was, I couldn't fit into the go cart. I tried but quickly made an excuse and jumped out when I realized there was no way it was going to happen -- even in the bigger go carts. I have high hopes that I will be able to lose the weight and when I do, I'm going to insist that we go back to Myrtle Beach and I'm going to drive around in that silly little go cart and race my son around the track.
