  1. Being newly banded since March 12th and maintaining a liquid diet for the next couple weeks my, fiber intake as expected is low. Also being a hobbyist cook I've been coming up with recipes to go with my new lifestyle. I was wondering this. If I were to take 1/2 cup of fiber one which has 14gr. of fiber and only 60 calories and put it in my coffee grinder and turn it to powder and say mix it with a cup of applesauce (100cal) or mix it with my yogurt, would I still get the full 14 gr. of fiber in it's new altered state? I'm assuming so, but wanted to know others' thoughts. I would think this highly rich fiber would be ideal to mix with soups, and other liquids that it wouldn't be an issue downing it.

    Make sure you save 1 pair of pants. Keep the largest you ever wore. it'll be cool to put those on and pull the excess away like you see all those skinny people do in the fake diet ads. Yours will be real though.:thumbup:

    Day after Sx

    Why are you eating pureed foods the next day? You should be on clear liquids for at least a few days to a week and then liquids for up to 4 weeks. That's like putting vinegar on your cut, WAY to sensitive to handle pureed foods this early. Didn't your doctor go over your new routine?
  6. let me preface this by saying although I may be questioning somethings, it's in no way lecturing you as i feel this is a SUPPORT site, but...... Your post-op regiment is very odd to me. 8 days post-op and you're eating mushies at 3 days and solids at 4 days? Then the doctor says it's OK to take the weight loss meds? I don't know this Dr. from Adam, but there' s good Drs. and bad ones. it really seems he follows VERY unconventional ways. Ask EVERYONE on here if this sounds normal and I'll doubt you will find any to agree, other than maybe someone who has had the same Dr. , thus the same advice. And you know 3 weeks in advance, after only 8 days that you're getting your first fill on 4/15? That's insane. How does this doctor KNOW you will need a fill when you're a week off the table? Some people don't need a fill for 6 months. Fills are determined based on how you are doing. You're way to early into the game to even make that determination. And lastly, stay off the scale. A scale doesn't make you lose weight. Only you can do that. Your doctor or his staff should have filled you in on what you should be doing in that regard. If I hadn't had my surgery already and after reading lots about what's expected and then hearing the things your doctor has told you, I would have run for the hills. Don't let him or yourself derail this.

    Personally I think it's important to count calories for a while. Many of us got in the situations we're in because we were truly unaware of the amount of calories that we were ingesting. Also with poor food choices, a small handful of food could be anywhere from 50 calories to 500 calories, so volume doesn't necessarily mean calorie amount. I think until you can break the habit and be able to look at ANY amount of ANY food and be able to tell how many calories and it's basic makeup of fat, protein and carbs, it's very important to continue analyzing what you eat. This is all about retraining yourself to recognize what's good and bad for you, not only in regards to portion control but nutritional make-up as well. At that point it will be very easy to make a mental note of what your putting in your body and it will become second nature.

    I hear ya. You seem to be doing great though, 13 lbs in 7 days! I guess it's good to compare what others are doing who got banded the same time, let alone the same day. For the first couple/three days I was only at like 300 calories a day, but not in the least bit hungry. I've added some of that great pea soup so a bit more. My tally for today is 600 calories, 75 Grams of protein and 48 oz of water. Now if the yogurt and soup count as fluids, then the amount is probably around 68oz. Is this anywhere in line with where you're at? My name is Bob by the way.

    I wouldn't be so concerned. I was banded on the 12th as well partner! I felt that way for the first 4 or 5 days too. It's since gone as is most of the gas pains. I do burp a bit, but being a guy it's like a badge of honor, like showing off. When I burped it really hurt there for a while. Now all is well. Things have been sailing along right now. Promised not to weigh myself again til Monday. Too often isn't a good thing, it'll happen whether I weigh myself or not. I'm just wondering at what point the LB, the worrying about getting enough protein, water, etc will be out of my head. I'm sure we're all going through the same thing that the band is in our thoughts EVERY waking moment. Not issues or problems, just conscience of it. I wonder when life goes back to normal. Do you have these thoughts as well?

  11. pmommy... I'm saying this with concern and that we are all in this together, yet not all on the same page. Your mistake wasn't the soup, it was where you got the soup. Relying on store or restaurant made foods is not good at this point. More than likely that "chili" soup was probably 30-40% FAT. That's what did you in, prolly made you feel like crap as well. Why not get a can or fat free soup? Blend it well, mix with some unjury unflavored Protein and your set. Or better yet, if you have the time, make home made soup and you can control it. I'm gonna give you the BEST recipe ever. Hope you like Split Pea Soup. Simple and delicious. 2 pound of split peas 1 medium Onion finely chopped 3 carrots finely chopped 12 cups of Water 2 tablespoons of chicken Base Put it all in a pot and SIMMER for 2 hours. DON'T use salt, doesn't need it. You'll know when it's done and as long as the heat is low there's no such thing as cooking too long. Make it nice and thick. Put it all in a blender and liquefy. You will yield about 9- 12oz servings. With your restricted diet, it will taste like liquid sugar, so sweet. I pour 12 oz in each red solo party cup, freeze them and then pull them out of the cups and put them in a big ziplock in the freezer. Now whenever you want one, take one out, put it in a mug or bowl and microwave. best part, 9 servings for about $2.50 TOTAL, 300 calories, 25 GR PROTEIN, 0000 FAT and about 50 grams of energy giving GOOD carbs. I know you'll all be thanking me:biggrin:

    Tired and Weak

    As long as you're getting in your protein, 60-80 grams and plenty of fluids, 64 OZ your body shouldn't need much more. With the grams will come carbs which will give you some energy. Your body won't be suffering from malnutrition if you eat your protein and drink your water.
  13. I'm surprised that you haven't been advised about this. I'm only banded a week so not there yet, but you should eat a sensible balance diet. Just don't over do it. Find out things that agree with you and eat in moderation. Hopefully your restriction will keep that in check. Just watch out. I saw someone post that they were discouraged because just a few weeks in she couldn't understand why she was able to eat 4 slices of French Toast without being full. I can't understand why someone who is dedicated to losing weight and studied up on what they need to do would even consider putting 4 slices of French Toast on her plate. This procedure isn't about seeing where your fill limit is. It's about being able to control caloric intake while LEARNING a new way of eating sensibly.

    supplemental protein

    It seems that everyone is looking at the powder shake kind of protein. Many of them can have a nasty taste, but the Unjury unflavored is really good depending on what you use it in. I use it to make protein sugar free Jello, Jello brand fat free, sugar free puddings, and can mix it with soup. For a GREAT source of protein for those that don't like chalk or thick drinks, try New Whey Liquid Protein by IDS. 42 Grams in 3.7 oz of liquid. SOME drink it straight, but I find it too sweet, PLUS I need the fluids, so I mix half a tube with 20 oz water and it has a nice flavor to it without any aftertaste. Fruit Punch and Blue Raspberry are the best. They also have Acai Berry, Orange and grape, but I'm not a big fan of those. They sell for around $2.50-2.75 a tube, but my local guy sels them to me for $28 for a case of 12. You should really try it. If you drink 40 oz of water with the stuff you'll get 42 grams of Protein, and no chalky, milky, thick, yucky shake stuff. You can also use it when you make Jello as long as you wait till the hot liquid is below 130* as with all protein supplements before you mix with the cold water.

    Program Fee

    My Doc wasn't in my network but took what the insurance paid. No out of pocket to him at all. I did however still need to meet $675 of my deductible for the hospital. he had nothing to do with that. That was from the hospital itself. Still not bad for a procedure that would have been $25,800 total.
  16. Just got banded on 3/12 and interested in going to some meetings. The only one I know of is run by the hospital where I was banded, Saint Clair's in Dover. Next meeting isn't till the 24th though. Anyone know of this group or others local? Thanks

    Reborn on March 12th, 2010

    Thanks Tracy. I know I need to drink more, but I just got banded and actually have been sleeping a bit more than usual so not drinking as much as I probably should, but was told to goal for 64 oz but at least 32, so that's what I was trying to do. Just kinda scared to over do it. Don't know what it's like to drink too much yet. It's all protein based so at least I'm getting the nutrition.
  18. Just had my surgery on Friday March 12th. Feeling a bit of pain, gas, nervousness....Did I REALLY do this? It happened so fast. I thought about it for a few years, but just dreaming. I'd have to say that it was golfer John Daly that pushed me to make the move. I thought if he could do it, so could I. I've always liked him and it's kind of easier when someone that people know have gone through it. Kind of takes the embarrassment and stigma away. Found a local Dr. about a mile from me that did the procedure and set up and appointment on December 18th. They took my insurance card and did everything. Although he is not in my plan, he accepted the insurance payment without billing me further, so my only cost was the remaining of my deductible for the hospital which came to $675. Not bad at all. I'm going to go to my first support meeting in about 10 days, but will hopefully lean on many of you here. I know i can do it, just will probably have many questions. It's weird because It's now been 68 hrs. since my last food, a pop tart, and all I've had since is about 120 oz. of liquid. Not really hungry, but a pudding will be welcome in a day or 2.:thumbup:
