Older people doing gastric sleeve
Patrick M replied to stellabella1334's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was 69 when I had my sleeve revision from a band. It was not as easy a recovery as the band. I am 2 years post op now and have reached my goal but not without several conplications. I had dehydration and had to go back in the hospital two weeks later. I also have chronic diarrhea to this day. My internist can not find a reason for this but I think age plays a part. -

Yes, I had the same problem. I was in the hospital for 4 days. Nothing would go down or stay down, including Water. The opening to my stomach had swolen shut. Finally opened enough to take fluids so they let me go home. I had a very long and difficult recovery . There is good and bad to my story. I am almost 2 years post op but I am at my goal weight. Hasent been an easy process. I have chronic diarrhea, which two different Dr's can not fix. I did not know that this problem was possible with the sleeve. Patrick

Banded in 2001. Questions about converting to Sleeve. Scared.

I had a revision from band to sleeve on 9/3/15. I would strongly recommend anyone who has had the band for 6 to 8 years to have it removed. There life span is not lifetime as I was initially told. Scaring is a major problem with the band. I will admit I had more problems with the sleeve than with the band but I attribute that to the problems the surgeon encountered. I had everything done in one surgery. Band removed, scar tissue removed, large hiatal hernia repair and sleeve. Most surgeons are reluctant to do band surgery anymore. Most insurance will cover revisions to sleeve as a medical necessity, mine did. I have lost 37 pounds and am back to normal food. The main difference between the band and sleeve, for me, is gas with the sleeve. Initially the sleeve caused a lot of saliva reflux but that stopped after a month. -
Band to sleeve in one surgery. Who's had it done that way? How long had you had your band? What was your recovery like? Any complications? Regrets?

I am 4 weeks post revision. I had the band for 10 years an also was never told that the band had a 6 to 8 year life span. I too was a mess inside. Scar tissue and a large hiatal hernia. I am having problems with the sleeve. I can hardly keep anything down and the seliva reflux is very bad. Since I can hardly keep anything down I am losing weight too fast. 35 pounds in 4 weeks. I have had to go back to the hospital for dehydration two weeks ago and feel like I need to go back again. This is not what I expected. I am worried at this point but my doctor does not seem to be. I am half way to my goal weight but at the speed of my loss I am afraid of malnutrition . -
Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?
Patrick M replied to Tazwella's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I just had a revision from band to sleeve 17 days ago. I have lost 26 pounds, which is faster than my weight loss with the band. However, my rapid loss is due to reflux which has plagued me from day one post op. Hiccups are very irritating and getting proper calories/protein is a problem. My Dr. says it just takes time and is complicated by a large hiatal hernia repair. -

Should I change to a new type lap band ?

Thanks Msippi I think my Dr. wants the money too. I think they must think we are stupid when they say it's not leaking but you lose Fluid. -

Should I change to a new type lap band ?
Patrick M replied to Patrick M's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Have I posted this in the wrong forum. I am mainly interested in the supposed obsolescence and need to change my band ( according to my doctor) Is he just after more money ? It is a 10cc band and I thought it was good for a lifetime. -
Should I change to a new type lap band ?

Interesting. Was this done under local or general anesthesia. My loss is very slow and I still had most of the fill,5cc last time, down from 7cc. -

What did your leak repair entail ? Mine is the 10 cc model and I have never had an issue other than some Fluid "disappearing" -
I am 9 1/2 years post op. My last visit for a fill was about two years ago. At that time I had a procedure to check the position of my band ( can't remember what type) My band was still in the correct position. My original Dr., who I have never liked, said my band was the first style to be used and should be replaced, since there are now using a sixth generation ( that was two years ago) I told him that I had thought my band was good for a lifetime. He said no, it is not. Even though he said it should be replaced, he is reluctant to do so because of my age (69). He said he would think about it, that was two years ago and I have not heard from him since. I'm wondering if anyone else has been given this type of information or changed to the newer generation band. I think I have a leak in mine because I have had several fills over the years and there is always less liquid than there should be. My Dr. says there is no leak but can not explain where the Fluid is going. His words " It just went away" Not a very satisfactory explanation.. Not sure what to do at this point so feedback would be appreciated.

I'm ten days post opp and dropping a pound a day. With the pre opp fasting I'm down 15 pounds. I'm trying to counter general weakness with protean but even with no fill, it's a struggle. During surgery they found a large Hiatal hernia which I did not know I had. They fixed it and surprise, no more reflux. I'm hurting but figure that's because of Two surgery's at the same time. I do have a question, where dose all this gas come from and how long will it last. 280/265/180 Patrick

Hi all This is my first post. I'm pre-op and am collecting things I will need post-op. Can anyone recommend a good recipe book? Patrick M
