Doubting decision in final hour
oldoneyoungagain replied to SueC1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have diabetes, high blood pressure and mild sleep apnea. When I lost weight on weight watchers I got down to 155 lbs. The doctors had assured me if I lost the weight diabetes would go away as well as the high blood pressure. At that time I didn't have sleep apnea. The down side the two big problems didn't go away that being diabetes and high blood pressure. I just had my lapband removed because it slipped but I had lost 50 lbs., still have diabetes and HBP and only have 50 more to go. I probably could go through weight watchers and do it again but I would rather have the tool that will help keep it off plus not being a diabetic. You see just because you lose weight doesn't mean you still will not be a diabetic, the research just hasn't come in why the RNY put most of the patient into remission for their diabetes. But it does have something to do with the surgery as many people leave the hospital diabetic free. If you want to just lose on your own, I wish you good look, but don't think all your medical problems will go away. Good luck with your decision. -
help hair loss
oldoneyoungagain replied to kether0896's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I really really hope you are getting all the protein you are required to get. Don't know how far out from surgery you are, but if you are not getting your protein your hair loss will not be your only problem. Get Biotin, but even with that you still are going to have some hair loss, but it seems to help excalate new hair growth also. Started taking it about six weeks before I had my band removed, and I'm two months out. Just starting to lose a little hair but not like I did when I had the band placed and I wasn't taking Biotin. -
Going to try it also, but changing the skim milk to either original coconut milk by Silk or their almond milk, both have less calories then skim and about half the carbs. Also, might add they both have more Calcium. I love my oatmeal also but gave it up because of no protein and felt the only advantage of it was the Fiber and of course it lowers your cholesterol (but that is eating it daily-not). Thanks for the recipe. Going to the store shortly and get some fruit.

How do I get a ticker?
oldoneyoungagain replied to Sunnybare's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Shawna29 Look at the message above your message or look below mine. The one above shows a ocean, sand, and a mermaid and mine shows a red car, road, and finish line. It also shows our beginning weight, what we have lost to now, and what weight we want to get to. Hope this helps. -
Why no water with meals?
oldoneyoungagain replied to Pam Peltz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
DL, Love your explanation because I was told the same thing, 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after, but wasn't given the reasoning as to why nor did I ask for some stupid reason. So thank you for a very clear understanding as to the reason. But do have a question. If there isn't any food in the pouch 30 minutes before we eat what would be the reasoning of not drinking 30 minutes before? Is it because we are more apt to feel full and not eat the amount that we should or would it be we are washing the salvia down and out that is needed to help the food digest when we do eat? Or is it something else. I just have an inquisitive mind and trying to figure the logic behind it. Would you possibly know? -
gastric bypass or gastric sleeve?!
oldoneyoungagain replied to katrinaxox1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Soccermomma73 I totally agree with you on this subject. I' m sure you feel as I do that if we had had all the research on the band back when we had it, would have made a totally different decision. So many didn't like a foreign object in their body but it could be taken out. RNY can be reversed if medically necessary. But it is my understanding with the sleeve thats it. 2/3s of your stomach is totally removed and placed in the little red bag labeled hazardest waste. The other down side is it doesn't have anymore research done on it as the lapband had three years ago, and leading hospital are no longer even offering lapband because of its issues. So people don't know what they are really getting into at this point, Actually the doctors don't know the down side of the sleeve either, because they don't have any more research than a layman, it isn't out there yet. Myself, as you, am going after what is tried and true RNY the "golden standard" of over 30 years. -
While sitting in the doctor's office, waiting to visit with the dietitian, there was a magazine that I was looking through and it had an article regarding hair loss, three of the major issues that cause hair loss is #1. Not enough protein, #2 stress and #3 heredity. Bypass surgery definitely causes two of them, not enough protein and the stress of the surgery plus all the worry it puts you through.

Benadryl if you are allowed to take it. You are having a reaction to one of the medications, possibly whatever they used to knock you out, antibotic or your pain medication. You probably have hives. PS Benadryl will make you sleepy if you take it, just an FYI.

Destroyed my life
oldoneyoungagain replied to sc_mama4's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Totally agree with you John. Any of the WLS need to be researched, doctors who do the surgeries need to be researched, the hospital where the procedure is being done needs to be researched. Then I think it is up to the individual to ask that surgeona number of questions i.e.what type of problems he/she as encourtered during his practtice. I know if it were jmyself I would be asking lots of questions What it the percentage of patients that have had pretty serious problems, are they on the right track now or still having difficulty, What type of problem were they having. Any related deaths from this surgery. What is the percentage of deaths in your practrice Lastly hiw long has he been doing this type of surgery? -
Egg White Protein Shakes?
oldoneyoungagain replied to Kellyk2511's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Might add, since your body can only utilize 30 grams of protein at a time, my protein is 20 grams and by adding liquid whites to it I can increase the protein to get that 30 grams in, thus apx two more shakes I pretty much reach my goal for the day also my liquid intake. But without flavor of some sort don't think there would be much taste to just a egg white protein shake, just my thought. -
Egg White Protein Shakes?
oldoneyoungagain replied to Kellyk2511's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
3 tablespoons of liquid egg white has 5 grams of protein. This equals one large egg. Egg whites are very good for you, it is the yoke that creates a cholesterol issue. I have eaten egg white omlettes (cheese and veggies added) and to me they are great. Down issue is only if you are allergic to eggs. I buy liquid egg whites in a container as I do liquid eggs, as I can increase my protein count by adding cheese. I don't think this is a "new" protein as eggs are recommended in all WLS as a source of protein if you can eat them. I can, but really have difficulty with hard boiled eggs, they are too dry and hard to swallow for me. -
Am I Over-Reacting?
oldoneyoungagain replied to Gibbys Goddess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How much weight would you expect to lose, if you were doing WW, Nutrisystems, etc., in one month? Most programs and doctors recommend five lbs a month, it is easier to maintain and keep off then losing a lot very fast. So you have been doing a great job. I have read where people are still losing at three years with bypass which is good because they are working the tool and thus they continue to lose, not gain, and eventually maintain and not put it back on. Just remember who won the race, the turtle or the rabbit so be patient you will succeed? Also, you may have to either increase calories for a few weeks to adjust your metabolism as it also becomes a "couch potato" and gets use to the calories you are taking in and the excerise you are doing. I was "chewed on" because I wasn't losing and when they asked how much I was eating, 600 calories, they told me that wasn't enough as I had put my metabolism into starvation mode and I wouldn't lose until I increased the calories, I did and lost another five pounds. So I up and down my calories when I stall. Just keep it up, you will succeed, just look at the bigger picture, you didn't put on all those pounds in 17 weeks, so don't expect it to come off that fast either. But you have a great tool now, that is helping you, you'll get there. You are doing fantastic. -
4 weeks post-op and no sense of fullness
oldoneyoungagain replied to sweetohiohoney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Someone posted regarding this issue earlier and there was a reply that actually it could be that the sensation of hunger these first few weeks/months might be head hunger. They say it will eventually go away. Someone also suggested to brush your teeth as this helps you to feel satisfied if you still feel hungry. Thought I would try this last one to see if it works. Hope you get more suggestions as I read a lot of post with the same issue. Good luck. -
K-mart is owned by Sears and they definitely cannot afford crap like that. They have been so close to bankruptcy over the years that they have had to close several stores including K-mart stores. I would write a letter of complaint to Sear's Corporate office, talk with the manager of the store or cc a copy to him.

Would You Have Weight Loss Surgery Again?
oldoneyoungagain replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes I did, and Yes I am. Band has been removed, maintaining that loss, and working toward the bypass. Haven't much more to complete and then insurance submitted. Then surgery date to be announced. Actually looking forward to it. Maybe I'll be able to eliminate fifteen + medications, or at least some of them. -
What do you say?
oldoneyoungagain replied to saramichelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Back in the late 80's when HIV/AIDs became the disease of the century and everyone was scared to even have any type of contact with a person with the diagnosis, if you lost a lot of weight because you were dieting, the first thing that came to mind with many people was you were HIV/AIDs positive, and there went your friends. You could tell them that you were dieting but you could tell they really didn't believe you. So no matter what you tell everyone, they will think what they want to believe. Very sad, because when you need the support, it isn't there. -
Besides weight loss, what has been the biggest benefit since getting surgery?
oldoneyoungagain replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Need a button under the fifth choice "all of the above" then "something else". I'm all of the above. -
If we could change our lifestyle we wouldn't be fat!
oldoneyoungagain replied to Kcarr1120's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Would any of you compare food addiction to alcohol or drug addiction? If you know you are addicted to food and want to change, then you have various groups to help you control your addiction to make your tool work, just as an alcoholic or a druggie has their group. It is only when you have hit rock bottom, whatever your bottom might be that any any type of weight loss procedure will work, because that will be your main goal. It has been proven these tools do work, as long as you work them. Maybe the simiplist suggestion is once an addict always an addict no matter what the addiction is. You have to be honest with yourself and fight the battle until the day you die or nothing that they have now or in the future fo help with WL is going to work. Just my opinion and thoughts. -
omg! first goal accomplished

Overeating since im gonna have surgery
oldoneyoungagain replied to Smilejoelle1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As I said before I have no will power, zlich, zero, nada and my stubborness left me yesterday as I had a complete melt down. Had two cinnamon/sugar pretzels (I didn't get the frosting to dip them in though lol) then it got worst from there. I got a pint of Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey, ate it tonight. The cost of my lack of control came to a grand total of approximately $99.99 plus state tax. So angry at myself over what I had done that I bought a Urban Rebounder Elevated Trampoline with 9 Workouts. Now when I get it I'll have to work my hindend off to get those calories off without injurying myself. After all I'm still 29 years old but will be celebrating my 42nd anniversary of my 29th birthday in August. LOL -
First post and first meeting with surgeon today!
oldoneyoungagain replied to J33PGRL's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Welcome, welcome, welcome happy to have you aboard. A good place to get information, give your story onto a new you and just reach out and vent if need be. We are here to help, read, and some advice if asked. Trying to get approval with your insurance is nerve racking to say the least. But after going through the lapband procedure and then its removal, and a discussion with the doctor's office regarding RNY, I find when you have a good doctor, a good team behind him, they usually know what you need to get approval. I've had two different doctors in two different clinics, two different insurances and haven't had a hiccup. I've not had my RNY yet as my doctor wants my stomach to heal from the removal of the lapband, should be sometime in September, and I have about two more hoops to jump through for the submission. Do want you to know my heart goes out to you about your recent diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease, your WLS will be a breeze compared to this disease. I used to work for a Nephrologist so quite familiar with it. Also have a daughter two years younger than you, who has been a chronic stone thrower since she was 19 and her daughter has inherted this problem also. Unfortunately they don't know what to do as Mayo Clinic cannot figure out why she produces so many kidney stones. Her kidneys always have at least 15 stones if not more in each kidney at any given time. Keeping fingers crossed that you get good news today and everything goes well. Onward to a new you. -
Overeating since im gonna have surgery
oldoneyoungagain replied to Smilejoelle1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pretty much gave up all the good things that you all have mentioned. Diet Pepsi was my go to drink, but think I replaced it with more coffee, which has since turned out not to have been a good choice. But all this was three years ago when I was banded. Now I'm basically in the same boat. No band, nothing stopping me from eating what I want, when I want, etc. until I have bypass in about three months. I don't have will power, never have that is why I needed a tool to control my weight, but I'm pretty darn stubborn. So since I did lose weight with the band, I'll be darn if I put on any weight just to have to take it off again, so I still have to look and smell but don't dare touch. So please eat for me too, I miss Chunky Monkey, Java Chip my two favorite ice creams, any donuts, cream puffs, peach cobbler, German Chocolate cake, pizza, and yes the cheddar biscuits, and my list goes on, and on. Lol -
Have you tried by going into your sign in name and click on it? I think it states something like Update and there is a sub-heading My Tickers, click on that a follow directions.

how did you tell friends and family.
oldoneyoungagain replied to kracinski's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would probably leave it where you now have it. As others remark on your weight loss, just say "thank you". If they ask how you did it, answer "through dieting an excerise". Not a lie, as WLS is just a tool, to make it work you have to diet and excerise. -
Only as long as I was on pain meds and not eating enough fiber. Did not make it a habit.
