Sweating/shakiness from lack of calories?
lauragshsu replied to sockmonkey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I often suffered from this preband. If I ate too little/not often enough/not enough protein, I would get shakey, weak and feel light headed. I've only experienced it once post band, and it was because I was in the ER with my husband, and hadn't eaten and it was 2pm by that point. Even then, I wasn't weak or lightheaded, just shakey. -
Dying for a Diet Coke!!
lauragshsu replied to Mamarotten's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drink soda, maybe 1-2 a week. I pour a can into a 20oz bottle and shake the crap out of it repeatedly until it's almost fizzless. I still drink a crapload of water, though. -
8 1/2 weeks post-op and disgusted.....
lauragshsu replied to SHRINKINMOM2010's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The alternative is not pretty. I went in 4 weeks post op and had my first fill of 3.5CC (in a 10cc band). Three days later, I was vomiting up even saliva. I had to have a complete unfill. I returned a few weeks later and was "refilled" to 2.8cc. It was great for a while, until it suddenly got too tight, and I was vomiting with every meal and had sharp chest pains with every bite. They took out .3cc (so I'm currently at 2.5cc). The doctor said if the pain/vomiting continues, I might have a bigger problem (band slippage). It takes a while for you to heal from the surgery. Just because you're external wounds have healed doesn't mean internal wounds have healed. It also takes (on average) 1-2 weeks after a fill for the initial swelling to go down. Have you discussed things with your doctor? I know a lot of doctors (including mine) do not charge for an extra fill or unfill if done within 1-2 weeks after the initial fill (if it's too tight or you feel the fill was insufficient). -
There are a lot of women here with PCOS. I have it and was banded 4 months ago. It's been great. I was really worried about getting shakey/weak feeling I would normally get (before the band) if I didn't eat enough or eat often enough. I haven't had that feeling since being banded! As for the belly, I'm not sure. I'm still working on mine!

How painful was your surgery on a scale of 1-10
lauragshsu replied to spoiltmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This was my first surgery and I would say 2-3, maybe. then again, I was accidentally ODing on pain meds for the first 2 days- I was taking 2-3tablespoons ever 4 hours, instead of teaspoons. There's a reason you shouldn't be in charge of your own medication right out of surgery. -
Ok, I have a couple of questions: 1) what do you feel like is missing with your fiance? Is there something you feel is missing with her, with you or with your relationship? Have y'all tried premarital counseling? 2) Do you think you really need a close guy friend? I agree with the previous poster who said most men don't have close guy friends. My husband has many "friend-quantances"- people he knows, talks to at work, and might go to a BBQ at their house, but we wouldn't call them if it was a serious situation. I don't think it's abnormal for most people these days not to have really close friends. 3) Can I ask what the head injury was? Have they made sure all parts are workign correctly? Sometimes people change, and it takes injuries or traumatic events to change us. 4) Have you talked to your fiance about the event last summer? Do you feel like she should 100% have your back? Did something more happen (like she ended up blaming you or attacking you)? 5) I feel like I've let my father down, too, even with two degrees. Like I said earlier, education doesn't mean crap- you can have a ton of degrees and certifications and still be unemployed. You can have nothing and make a ton of money. Has your dad ever said anything to make you think you're a disappointment? 6) What is the head injury stopping you from doing that you really want to do? From what I can tell, you are a very intellegent, well spoken man.

I'm just going to jump in on one point (it's late and I'll reply more tomorrow). Education doesn't mean crap. I say that because I have experienced it. I have a bachelor's and a master's degree in education, and guess what? I have been out of a job for over a year. My brother barely graduated high school (and I really do mean barely), and makes over $80,000 a year. Education doesn't mean crap.

Numbing medication with fills
lauragshsu replied to jessicakolman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The fills don't hurt so much. It's the unfills that hurt! Maybe I'm just a wuss. -
Very pissed Off!!!!!
lauragshsu replied to lashonda23's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm assuming these people have not had any type of WLS. If they haven't one easy way to get them to shut up is (next time they sy something like that) to turn to them and say "Oh, well, tell me all about your experience with gastric bypass and lapband, since you obviously know all about it". -
Went against my doctors advice and had the band
lauragshsu replied to Ninababy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
No one has ever suggested bypass for me because of my PCOS. I was worried about losing with the band because of the PCOS. I haven't had to worry. 4 months out, I've lost almost 65lbs and haven't been on any meds (like metformin). -

really upset pleaseeeeee help!

The rate of mortality is much lower than any other type of WLS. What were the complications? Was is something surgeon-related, or was it an underlying condition she had? -
Can I starve the children?
lauragshsu replied to MollyRN's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not going to lie. It sucked the big one having to prepare these delicious meals for my family while sitting down to a bowl of hot flavored water for myself. For b-fast, my daughter subsisted on yogurt, bananas and fruit cups (fruit packed in juice). For lunch, it was turkey hotdogs or grilled cheese. She's 2.5 and didn't complain. -
I went to my first class last week. Apparently the regular instructor was out, and the replacement was teaching us all sorts of interesting clubbing moves (popping, crunking, shaking our booty). It was an interesting class. The regulars told me to come back this week to try a *real* zumba class.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a diet?
lauragshsu replied to pickles123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't counted crap. I don't count calories, carbs, Protein, fat, sugar, etc. I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I'm full. To me, that's not a diet. A diet is restriction and being hungry. I've done WW before and so many times I've gone to bed hungry because I didn't have any more points, or fretted about a birthday party and whether or not I could have a piece of cake. Now, I do eat differently than before. I use my daughter's small plates (a bit smaller than a salad plate). I eat much much slower. I eat my protein first. Most ofthe time I have to avoid most breads. But for me, it's not a diet. I was at a birthday party at chuck e cheese today and had a slice of b-day cake without having to worry about counting colories or carbs. I just ate a lot less cake. -
Do you only eat three meals a day?

Discrimination / social marginalization
lauragshsu replied to edub's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think it's a combination of things. I think we begin to act in a way society expects us to act. When I was in seventh grade, I was maybe 15lbs overweight. I remember one day sitting at lunch with my friends and someone was trying to give away part of their meal they didn't want. Someone said "give it to laura, she'll eat it. She'll eat anything!" I didn't want it. I wasn't hungry. But it was expected of me to want to eat their food. It's expected of us as heavy people to be quiet and timid, to be seen and not heard because our opinions aren't as valuable. -
I think there's a difference in all the parties. There's conservatives, then there's right-wing nut jobs. Just like there's liberals and there's the bleeding heart liberals. I think there are actually a lot of people who watch/read Fox news, but also who follow up on what they read/hear and find out more about it from other news sources. Unfortunately, most of those people aren't on this website. Keep on posting- I love reading what you say.

Cleo, I love you, really I do, but please don't lump all conservatives in the same group. Not all conservatives are neo-cons who want tax cuts for the rich, watch Fox news only and believe that every word out of Glenn Beck's mouth it truthful.

Saw the nutritionist yesterday and it was devastating...
lauragshsu replied to spoiltmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 5'9" and my goal (for myself) is 175, which would put my BMI at 26. Yes, still overweight. I would be good with 175. If I get under 175, even better! -
