I studied weight reduction surgery for two years before reaching a decision to do Lap Band. I needed time to make sure it was the choice for me, once done I had insurance problems. My wife and I both work in hospitals who advertise their Bariatric porgrams , but niether cover the cost for employees. Kinda hipprocritical. We found a creative way of self financing, we used the flexable medical spending account from both of our jobs. The money is taken out of your pay check pre taxed and is put on a Visa card in lump sum. The maximum is $5,000. with both my wife and I doning it, it covered $10,000 of the $11,500 cost of surgery. My story is pretty typical, over weight my entire adult life, developd co-morbidities, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. As the metabolic syndrome worsened, my weight became unmanagable, and the diabetes began to progress quickly. It was obvious that I had reached the "Tipping Point" where things would quickly get worse until heart attack, or stroke killed me. I chose Lap Band to help cure the diabetes and reverse the metabolic syndrome. My highest weight about a month before my first appointment with my surgeon was 365 lbs. I had the surgery yesterday and my weight that morning was 348. My goal is 160 to 150 lbs, which is "normal" for my height. I'm on the way!
