Not sure if I need another fill, but not losing weight
patsal posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
SO I was just thinking I am supposed to go to the Dr. next Wednesday for my appointment and to get my band adjusted if necessary. Only there is a problem, I don't know if I need a fill or not. I have not lost much this month--three pounds to be exact. I am tight in the AM and usually just have a shake for breakfast--it is quick, has a lot of protein grams and keeps me on track since I do not have time to cook in the morning. I have a mid morning snack of greek yogurt, and then lunch which is usually a salad with an ounce or two of chicken breast, tuna, or some other protein. Once home from work, I have another snack--maybe hummus and whole wheat pita chips, or cheese cubes and whole wheat crackers. Dinner consists of 2 ounces of protein, some veggies, some fruit and maybe some mashed potatoes. Totally a cup or less total. If my protein needs help I add another scoop of powder to 4 oz. of water to keep the grams up to prevent hair loss. I do not have to cut things up really small, but I do find I get mildly stuck on occasion. Usually if I eat too fast or am distracted by talking and swallow before chewing totally. I have never PB'd, but I have slimed a bit. So what do you all think? Am I almost at my sweet spot, but not quiet there yet or am I just not eating the proper things to help me lose weight? I am exercising at least three times per week for 1.5 hours at the gym (cardio and weights) and one or two days of just walking for about two miles. I will go to my scheduled appt. on Wednesday, but just wanted an idea about if I should get another fill or not. Currently there are 5 cc's in my 10cc band. -
Don't skip the shake because you cheated. You need to pump up the protien to help flush the carbs and carb addiction. Once you get past day four and have cleared the carbs you will feel better. Your body is detoxing from your carb addiction. You feel bad and hungry, but if you follow things as your Dr. laid out you will be over the addiction to carbs soon and feel better as well. You can do this, but you must stay away from the croutons and baby carrots!

None of that was on my pre-op diet. I had no fruit or veggie juice during my two week prep phase. My diet was 4 unjury shakes, 1/2 cup of cream of wheat in the morning, 1/2 cup fat free yogurt in the afternoon, 1/2 cup creamed Soup in the evening and 1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce if still hungry. SF pudding, Jello and popsicles could also be worked in.

I had an undiagnosed one repaired when I had my surgery. I had suffered from serious acid reflux for years, but I guess no one ever thought to have any testing done since the pills were keeping the acid under control for the most part. I know my PC had a NP that blamed everything wrong with me on my weight, so my guess is she figured if I lost weight my acid reflux would go away...

4th of July Challenge!
patsal replied to LeighaMason's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Down one, which is better than none or gaining I suppose. Maybe when I go for my fill today that will get me to my sweet spot and back to 2 pounds per week. :tongue2: -
band feels tighter different times of the day
patsal replied to icequeen813's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm supertight in the morning, so soft eggs on weekends when I have time ot cook or protein shake on weekdays. I have to sip water more slowly as well and can sometimes feel the restriction of water trickling. By lunch I am looser and can get softer foods down like thick greek yogurt, tuna salad, chicken salad, etc. I cna get water down with no issues By dinner I can eat just about anything. I think that I am nearly at restriction with 5 cc in a 10 cc band but I need a bit of a tweek because I can really put some food away at dinner! In late afternoon and evening I can gulp water with no issues. -
While it may be rude, High school students are not known for their tact. So , Tracy, I totally get it. I had one male student stay after class and ask, "Not to be rude, but are you losing weight?" I replied yes and wished him a good day. Later that week I saw a gril who is a senior in the hallway, I said Hi. She said "Oh my god, you are disappearing!" I smiled and said, "Come back next year and visit me, if you can find me--I may be totally disappeared!" While in the course of human events it may be rude to say these things, in the course of High School students, they will notice, they will say stuff (sometimes really mean stuff) and they will learn the hard way that it can be rude when someone does put them in a position of feeling awkward.

Humm is it considered cheating???
patsal replied to pocketsfullofsunshine125's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't do the biggest loser at work because I feel like others would consider it cheating. Really from my perspective it would not be, I do work for every pound I lose. In other's eyes, those that really think WLS is a quick fix, would not agreee with my view; it isn't worth explaining. I just figure I'll keep challenging myself, but really that big ole pot of money they all compete for every 20 weeks isn't worth it--they all gain it all back in between challenges and then start all over again. -
Anyone ever been prescribed water pills?
patsal replied to Diamondgirl81's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi lauren, I've been taking them for about three years. They were prescribed by my PCP when I went in with legs that were swollen and taut. I dropped about 15 pounds after 2 days of using them. Now I use them one every other day. Be sure to drink all that you were told to, or they will not do any good. I drink 3 to 4 32 oz. cups of water when I take them. They are one of the things I am hoping to stop using as I reach goal, but right now I know I still need them. Sally -
3rd fill today and 2nd time meeting post op with my surgeon
patsal replied to StevieVieth's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is so great for you! I have not seen my Dr. since surgery. He has his PA do all the fills and follow up I guess. Not something that I knew or even thought of before surgery to ask. It kind of bothers me a little, but I don't have problems so I guess it doesn't matter. -
Around here if subway can make a sub they can make it a salad. I have had them make me salads at subway and they are good. Taste like the sub without the roll!

First fill-no swallow test?
patsal replied to Bandmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do the barium swallow at the hospital before being released, but never after a fill. I get the fill, drink a dixie cup of water and am good to go! Fill are done quickly in the office and so long as the water goes down your good to go! -
Let's Play - What's your favorite Mushie?
patsal replied to mmesmama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ricotta cheese sprinkled with a little Italian seasoning and smooth sauce topped with reduced fat motz and baked until the cheese is melty. Love this and it is like a noodle fre lasagna. My other fav is refried beans with melted jack cheese and a dollop of sour cream and a dollop of smooth guacamole. Satisfies my ethnic food cravings and after what felt like an eternity of liquids was the best stuff ever! -
Not sure if I need another fill, but not losing weight

Good point, I will have to monitor that a bit more, but usually the shake lasts about 2 hours before I feel hungry, the yogurt holds for about 2 hours, the salad for two to three hours. By the time I get home from work the hunger is strong and I am ready to eat anything I can find--that is why the snacks are now all ready and pre-planned to prevent me form just eating anything I can find! Dinner is about 3 hours later and no late night hunger or anything, but I do have a SF popsicle or two every so often. -

What have you gotten rid of since surgery?
patsal replied to Astrasmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 285 when I started this journey and am now 227. I have lost 30 since being banded in February and the rest was pre-op. -

Acid reflux and the two prilosec per day I was taking. My ever aching hips, knee and ankles and the 6-8 pain pills per day I was taking. My cholesterol meds were cut in half, hopefully I'll be off them in 6 months. My 44 Double D Boobs! My granny panties! All my old shoes--who knew feet would shrink so much? Shyness and concern about what others think of my appearance. This is such a good thread! -

Skinnier before surgery...
patsal replied to SnowWhite760's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am stunned that a Dr. would band you with so little weight left to lose. The surgery itself is traumatic and will cause a weight gain between the IV's and such. You may not be getting enough calories. How many calories are you taking in, how many grams of protein? I would find it difficult to believe any one would do somthing as drastic as a full gastric bypass for so few pounds to lose. While I am certain you are frustrated, my thinking is that you are not taking in enough calories/protein grams to get an effective 1-2 pound per week weight loss. Have you discussed this with your nutritionist? -
so when does vomiting become "excessive" ?
patsal replied to kels764's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a 15 yo daughter and I would ask my surgeon to help her out if she were struggling. I would think sooner rather than later to offset any long term damage and disease. Good Luck! -
I am so deeply sad and frustrated...
patsal replied to msdv's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a similiar issue as far as approval. I went in for my consult all other stuff (psych, nut, etc. done) in November. They said they would call me in late December early January to set up my surgery . I did not hear from them. I called in mid January. They accidentally refiled my chart and never requested approval from my insurance. Obviously it was good that I called. They asked for rush approval and I was approved in 24 hours. It was an honest mistake and before that everything was very organized and after that htey were very organized and professional as well. I had my surgery February 12th and honestly that date was better for me than December or January would have been since I didn't need to take any time off from work--February break. Hang in there! -
Hugs to you at this difficult time. Your mother sounds like a wonderful woman.

Worried about my cruise next week
patsal replied to minni's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I always follow the same diet I did post op but abbreviated. I do clear liquids for a full 24 hours before and after a fill, then full liquid for a day or two, then mushies for a day or two then back to soft solids, and full diet as tolerated. I found when I tried to progress too quickly things would get stuck and I would be uncomfortable. Go backwards for a dayor two then, if you need to, get a slight unfill.
