I am 30 years old ang weigh 350 lbs, my weight has always been an issue for me. I have tried Weight watchers several times and other trendy diets, that only start out successful. I plan to get the lap band but I am only at the very start of the process. The University of Iowa hospital has recieved my application and confirmed w/my insurance company (Blue cross blue sheild of IL), at this point I am waiting for them to call me for an appointment for an evaluavtion. One wuestion that I do have after reading through various comments and blogs is.. what does it mean to get filled? Is there a certain amount of weight that you are required to loose before they follow through with the surgery? Any other comments or advice for my? I am excited but, feel like I may have a long journey just to get to the starting point of all of this.

So... I had my evaluation today to start the initial process for lapband. Walked away kind of disappointed. Doc says my BMI is too high and would not recomend me for lap band. Instead we are looking at gastric bypass, I still want it so bad but, now a little more nervous bout the surgery. Looking right now I could possibly have surgery April/May.

I am going in for my evaluation for Lap band on 1/14/10, I have BCBSof IL, they (University of Iowa Hospital) have informed me that I will be required to go on a 3 month diet per insurance and the Dr. will want to see weight loss as well. Has anyone recently had experience w/BCBS of IL, most what I have found is negative feedbanck about how difficult but, that was also posts from 2007 and 2008. Any one with any words or views for me is greatly appreciated! I know the hospital has already contacted my insurance company and it is covered but reading the policy is so confusing to figure out exactly what they are looking for.

Hi I am 30 years old and 350 lbs, I am hoping to qualify for lap band surergy. If qualified as medically neccessary I will be banded at the University of Iowa Hospital. If anyone one has gone through the process here I would appreciate any feed back. I have filled out my application and they have called my insurance (BCBS of IL), they will be calling me in a couple of days for an evaluation. Some questions: What does the evaluation consist of? How long typically before surgery? After surgery, how long is recovery? I understand that getting filled is inserting saline to the band to tighten it but, where is the port and how do they repeatidly get to it? I am very excited and wishful that I will be approved for this, I have struggled with my weight all of my life!
