Post op experiences and support
general_antiope replied to can_do's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I went to mushies yesterday because 1) I got crazy dizzy again at the supermarket, and 2) I cannot stand another minute of Protein Shakes or broth. I have been taking Aleve for my lingering pain and have had no restriction issues (I'm empty, but it means I'm not swollen). My hunger's been through the roof too, and my calories are starvation-y. I had 1 scrambled egg with a tiny bit of cheddar on it at breakfast, a Protein Shake for lunch, and 1/2 cup of pureed chicken salad for dinner. I felt much better. I'm not advocating anyone else doing this...Just sharing my experience. I track all calories and Protein, I was under 1100 yesterday. -
Glad to hear you're doing well!

How much weight has this whole forum lost
general_antiope replied to cheryl2586's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
From my heaviest at previous banding to today's loss, 48. (up to 13 lbs lost so far with this new banding!) -

Agree with this 100%! Yes, any system can be abused, either controlled or chaotic. The key is enforcement. Alex sounds like he's fully aware of this and plans to police the site himself. Alex, for other ideas on committees, I'm just spitballing here - what about a committee for each category or forum? It's an easy way to split up duties. The larger categories might need a couple groups. -

Oh yeah, I've seen this dynamic in action here. I wonder how it'll be addressed. IMHO there should be a single policy that all adhere to for stuff like this to work. It could either be a guideline that requires constant monitoring/correction or a hard-and-fast rule that has no exceptions, but having warring camps both be deputized can be a nightmare. Good point. -

I'd be interested to hear from you what went wrong on those sites. I've seen lack of organized leadership turn an otherwise healthy board into an "us vs them" war. Veterans vs newbies was the most common fight It was like high school where the seniors only wanted to hang out with other seniors. Or torture the freshmen. Having a welcoming committee (or patient and interested people) pointing newbies to information, or answering the same question a million times took the pressure off veterans who wanted to kick back and relax, and cherry pick the conversations they got into. Just my experience! -

Troll is slang for someone who goes on to message boards and deliberately causes arguments - it's not a reference to their looks in any way but rather their behavior not meant as an insult. -
I don't get what the big deal is with the northeast snow. So they're calling for a bunch of inches. I have yet to be impressed by advertised inches in snowfall, jean sizes I could lose, or wiener size of over-sharing dates. Yeah I said it. Jean sizes I could lose.

Heard this on the radio this morning

I gave up aspartame a while ago too. The problems it has caused in healthy people is frightening. You always hear about these man made chemicals one day being a death trap for people who innocently used them (sweet n low, tobacco!). I am not surprised at this kind of info. -

For a different point of view, in larger forums like this having a karma type system was helpful to differentiate the trolls from the leaders. Karma is another term for having both a like and dislike button. It works by showing an average reaction to some posts people type. As a previous poster mentioned, having a user based rating system helped identify trustworthy sources. In any system, it's possible to abuse the system. Having points is just as risky as not having a points system if the goal is to let knowledgable and reliable people be recognized. My suggestion would be to keep the like button but add a group of special users that Alex "promotes" to be official LBT moderators, or ambassadors maybe. They could have a special title or badge that denotes them as such. -
Fears, Expectations, Goals
general_antiope replied to general_antiope's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi there and welcome! There is nothing to fear...fear will sap your energy. Try to approach this in a positive and optimistic manner. You spent a lot of time planning this - you will do well because you want it! As far as diet, there are books out there for post bariatric surgery (and even banding) so try to google it. Also, your doctor will give you guidelines/menus. All doctors have different pre and post op instructions, so I'd ask them your question about no broth and all protein shakes. You're going to do great!! -
You've been through a lot before even getting to this point. There's so much ahead of you, too. What are your fears about your pending lifestyle change? What are your expectations about how this is going to change you - your life - your family and friends? Your job? What are your goals in getting this surgery? Is it to lose a number of pounds, or co-morbidities, or get to a certain size?

Let's hear your lap band related good news that DOESN'T involve your scale! There's tons of them out there - Did someone give you an unsolicited compliment? Did a previously negative person come around? Did you have your first positive experience in a dressing room, or get that outfit you've been yearning for? Share them all!

I'll start it off. I just broke 250 today! I weighed in at 248. I am still bloated with fluid but it's nice to see the scale finally budge after surgery 4 days ago!
