April 2013 Post-Op Group
SoccerMomma73 replied to Wendilou's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Typically it only lasts a few hours and starts either 30-60 minutes after eating, or, for late dumping, 1-3 hours after eating. A bite of a tart isn't typically going to be a large enough carbohydrate load to make you dump, even if made with sugar.....you'd have to have a large spoonful of pure sugar (for a point of reference, 1 cube of sugar has 2 grams of carbs, most dumpers require a carb load of 15+ grams, so 7 cubes of pure sugar, more or less). Maybe a cumulative effect of the entire meal out irritated your gut or maybe a bug? No telling! Stay hydrated and hope it passes soon!!!! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2 -

Need to have my band removed :(

http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/dumping-syndrome-causes-foods-treatments This is a decent explanation. I don't throw up or get diarrhea but I get the racing heart, nausea, sweating, etc. -

Well, yes and no. Actually less then half the people who get gastric bypass have dumping, and of those, the majority of cases are mild. Dumping is essentially like a blood sugar crash. It has to do with how quickly the stomach contents are moved out of the stomach and in to the intestine. For some people it's nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. For me it's exactly like a sugar crash. My first (and only truly bad) dump was 2-3 weeks post op. it was around 10:30 in the morning, I was still on puréed foods and made oatmeal for my son and I. I hadn't eaten since the night before, ate my 1/2 cup of oatmeal, and 30 minutes later because queasy, weak, shaky, sweaty, irritable, exhausted. The remedy is to get some carbs in quick with a little Protein to prevent another crash. I felt like hell for about 3 hours. With trial and error I've learned I CAN eat oatmeal, but I have to either make it with milk (for the protein content) or drink about 1/2 a Protein shake (12 grams of protein) before I eat the oatmeal. I can eat whole wheat Pasta or brown rice as long as I have meat or cheese of some sort with it. If I've eaten a normal dinner (meat and veggies) I can eat 5 or 6 bites of dessert without incident (lucky me, I rarely have the urge to eat dessert any more!). If I sat down and ate a bowl of ice cream I'd be sick but if I ate a burger then had 1/2 a scoop of ice cream I'd be fine. Some people say they dump on fatty foods, I don't eat much that's really fatty so I haven't seen this. For me the key is making sure I've gotten my protein in, after that i can pretty much eat a little bit of anything I want. If I ate 100% what my doc says 24/7 I'd never dump, however, I'm just not that good! I seem to be more carb sensitive then most bypass patients. Once you figure it out, it's really not that big of a deal. Plus awesome motivation not to eat those brownies mid-morning that someone brought to work today (I had 2 bites after I ate lunch instead, all was well). -
Heating pad!!! It saved my life

No weight loss in a week!
SoccerMomma73 replied to Ammariehs mommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yup, something along the lines of 'go my God she's starving us to death!!!! Hold on to ever miserable ounce and shut down EVERYTHING!!!' I was sooo cold when I did liquids. I swear everything that wasn't essential for survival just came to a screeching halt inside my body, being patient is hard, but it will start back up again. And 17 is an awesome start!!!! Revision Surgery; Weight Maintained
SoccerMomma73 replied to ChrissyHeart's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
My only advice is try your hardest!!! I had my band removed last August with expected revision to RNY but during the removal surgery had so much scarring and inflammation from the slippage that my doc took out my band and sent me home to heal for 6 months before revision. I lasted about 6 weeks maintaining my weight and then got ticked off that I was starving all the time and fell back into old habits. I gained 30 pounds in 6 months....was so mad at myself (but boy were the holidays yummy!!!!!). Practice your healthy eating habits. Small frequent meals throughout the day. High protein, low carb, and above all, KEEP EXERCISING!!!! Best of luck with everything!!!! -

I had my band out for 6 months before I could get my revision to RNY...I gained 30 pounds :/. I won't tell you what to do, there are risks associated with each surgery. I will say I love my RNY and feel better then I ever did with my band. There's no reflux or getting stuck, I don't feel like I'm starving all the time. I'm 5 months out and averaging 2-3 pounds a week loss consistently (doc says revisions tend to lose slower...as long as I keep losing I don't really care how long it takes!). I do have dumping if I get crazy with carbs but have absolutely no problem with normal healthy foods. Good luck! I wish you the best! -

If it helps, I usually start feeling less crappy on day 4-5 of the liquids, still worn out, but less miserable :/. Good luck!!! -

Double whammy! Even harder! Do what are you doing when you're stressed or upset? Found any new coping mechanisms??? You'll make it but it does suck sometimes! -
How about 'thank you for worrying about me but being isolated and not feeling like part of the family makes me feel worse'. I guess that's better than kiss my butt
-
I woulda told my husband to kiss my butt! That was very insensitive!!!!

Somewhat akin to losing a best friend at first....where you seek comfort, you no longer can. Later you realize it was really a dysfunctional friendship and you were majorly codependent...eventually you realize you can still be on friendly speaking terms but you can't ever return to the place where you seek her out for comfort, companionship, etc. in the end it's a much healthier relationship but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy being around her! -
Liked this at first then post-op just couldn't stand the saltiness of it any more....the exact same reason I liked it at first (everything else is soooo sweet!!!)

No ice after surgery?

In with the others, first post op meal was ice chips. If you find out why I'd love to know!!!! -
If you're starting from nothing I say start with walking. It's free, you can work it around your schedule, and you can easily increase time and speed when your body gets used to doing what you're doing. Some places offer beginner classes but typically The Water aerobics can be adjusted individually based on each participants ability and fitness level so really you can jump in at any time! if you want a trainer, Trainers are great and are there to support you. I would verbalized that you need someone warm and fuzzy and not a drill Sargent . Shouldn't be a problem for the gym to accommodate that. That said, there are lots of things you can do on your own so don't feel like you HAVE to get a trainer. If you want that one on one time with someone teaching you and can afford it, go for it!!!! Or if you're struggling to find a good work out or yourself or the weight is not coming off a trainer might can give ya some insight. HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

driving home right after surgery.
SoccerMomma73 replied to Angi281's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You will be on narcotic pain medications and unable to drive for at least a few days post-op. some places even make your driver sign that they're taking you. Sorry, but for safety reasons you're going to need an alternative plan HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2 -
Frustrated w/ Slow Loss
SoccerMomma73 replied to MGteacher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What do y'all consider a 'slow loser'? Cuz honestly you all sound like you're doing great. I dot really see how a 4 or 5 pound a week loss should be considered slow. I think it should be considered awesome!!! -
I have a couple flavors of decaf for our kureg at work, I add SF torani syrup (salted caramel is my fav) and a little SF flavored creamer.....tastes decadent but no caffein, no sugar, and about 30 calories. I often have 1 if I get cold at work or if I feel the need to snack. And once a week or so I have the fully leaded version.
