    August 2013 surgeries

Morphine pump but didn't use it much. Just not a fan of how pain meds make me feel (but I did use it some!!!). Apparently the IV Tylenol has been around a while, just not used in the US until recently. Who knew?!?!?

    Pre op shopping list

And decaf hot tea. I've found that sipping warm beverages seems to relax things and ease the gas as well. Plus when I feel puny I tend to drink hot tea. I guess it's one of my comfort foods. HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    August 2013 surgeries

Lol, the drag your butt out of bed the same day you have surgery!!! Like it or not . A heating pad was awesome for both the gas and surgical pain FYI. HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

What kind of diet are you on the first couple weeks? The first few weeks my doc has you sip on diluted 100% fruit juice throughout the day (drastically helps your energy level) so I kept a couple bottles (usually apple and white grape) of juice in the fridge. I also recommended a supply of crystal light or mio, Water tasted BAD to me for about 6-8 weeks after surgery. broth, SF pudding and Jello, low fat milk. If you get to do full liquid I'd keep creamed Soups, refried Beans (thin with broth), squash soups, broccoli cheese/cauliflower Soup (thin with broth) and bean soup (again purée and thin with broth) on hand. SF Popsicles and/or fudgecicles. Egg drop soup with the solids strained out was a staple while I was on liquids. I also was allowed cream of wheat and oatmeal while I was on liquids. Really, not much...you eat so little that a can of soup is 4 or 5 meals. It's crazy HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    Fabulous February Post-Op's

After playing with my flabby upper arms in the mirror earlier (I'm obsessed with how floppy it is!!!) I now have the batman theme song in my head, except where they say 'batman' I'm singing 'batwings'. Make it go away!!!!! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    silly question

Make up and face creams can cause problems with adhesives, they often tape the breathing tube in place while you're under, some places use stick on temperature monitors or apply electrodes to the temples or forehead....I hate that you feel bad without make-up, but if they say not to wear it, it really is in your best interest not to. Plus it's just gonna get smeared all over then you'll be a hot mess! I promise the hospital staff won't even notice that you have none on! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    Depressed/regretting?

I believe most of us felt that way at smell point . Major surgery, anesthesia, crazy diet, exhaustion, and for you no mess...it's a set-up to make you think you're crazy! I was an emotional mess for 6 weeks. SIX WEEKS!!!! At 5 weeks I looked at the other PA in my office and said I was giving it one more week, if I was still sad and crying in another week she was going to have to medicate me. Rest, eat well (as well as you can anyway), and try to be patient with yourself and this whole process. Also know that you are not alone, we're here with shoulders to cry on anytime. And no one else in the universe understands as well as we do! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    pre op diet question

Let me rephrase, some dizziness is normal. You've had a huge decrease in caloric intake, carb intake, etc. fatigue, headache, and dizziness are very common. If its extreme, you're confused or having mental status changes, can't stand, walk, etc, then that's a whole different story and needs checked out immediately! Good luck the first few days are by far the worst!!!

    3 days post-op

I am a tummy sleeper, 2 or 3 days after surgery I started sleeping kind of on my tummy but with a pillow under 1 side to prop me up a bit, found it very comfortable once I got into position. I was flat on my belly within a week though. As others have said, keep sipping and moving. Every day should be a little better HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    Afraid to Fail... AGAIN

I think, in this case, fear of failure is a good thing (as long as it doesn't become an obsession). It means you're really thinking about this and really want it. I think many people walk in to bariatric surgery thinking its the magic cure and voila! They'll be skinny. The truth is, it ain't easy. Oh it is MUCH easier than losing without the surgery and I personally think its a little bit magic but I still have to watch what I eat, make the right choices, and get off my butt and exercise (my own personal weakness). It's so nice not feeling like I'm starving all the time, I no longer wake up thinking about what I'll be eating all day long, in fact on weekends I have to make myself eat in the morning, I'm just not hungry yet. You will do fine, take that fear and run with it, use it as your motivation. You got this. HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    help after surgery..

It sounds like a fabulous plan! The kids are big enough they can help out as needed so that's fabulous! Connor had a lot of chili and spaghetti those first couple weeks (both of which he loves) then he figured out my puréed bean Soup was good stuff and started stealing my dinner. Whole sore and tired, it really all went off without a hitch. Hope things go as smoothly for you! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    Questions to Ask the Surgeon?

Oh then ask him EVERYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF!!!!! Big or small, ask it all. Will give you a good chance to see how open and receptive he is to his patients doing research and asking questions. And a good indicator of how supportive he will be with you long term. My RNY was done by the same doc that put my lapband in and then took my band out... By the time I had my RNY I was like 'just do it, I trust your judgement by now'. HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    Questions to Ask the Surgeon?

When will I be thin?!?!? I joke, I joke . I guess I'd be most interested in the differences in recovery and post op diet between your sleeve and the RNY. Also any particular complications you are at an increased risk for since you're a revision. How many revisions has he performed? How often does he see strictures? What supplements will you need post-op? What does he expect your weekly weight loss to be? Is this the same surgeon that did your sleeve or are you going with someone new? Good luck!!!! help after surgery..

I am a single mom with a now 9 year old son. I had a 3 night hospital stay then stayed with my parents for 3 nights. Went home with my 8 year old on day 7. Cooking was not a problem although I certainly didn't do anything fancy!! I had a 10 pound weight restriction for 6 weeks. My son carried the laundry basket for me but otherwise it was life as usual around our house. There was a time or two I dropped something and he would pick it up for me so momma wouldn't have to bend over. I do recommend doing as much as you can (within reason and within your docs restrictions of course!!!) I honestly thing getting up and taking care of my kiddo and our home, etc is a big part of the reason my recovery was so smooth. This would be TOUGH alone with a young child but as others have proven, it's absolutely possible good luck!!!! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

    Recovery after band removal

Wasn't really a big deal. Sore for a while but was back at work the following week. Within 2 weeks my energy level was the best it'd been in years (because I was eating real food and sleeping through the night again without choking to death). Good luck!!!
