    Nurses As Bariatric Patients

I had mine done at my hospital as well, strictly because I get a discount with them... (I'm a PA). The CNA that had me Monday-Thursday during the day was actually one of my patients it was awkward for about 3 seconds, but we laughed about it and she took great care of me. But I'm not particularly a private person, I pretty much tell anyone that asks anything they want to know.

    Self Sabotage

I'd like to know as well! My attempt at protein hot cocoa have been miserable at best, nasty as heck at worst. And Luke warm doesn't work, I want it at least a little hot!

    Which Blender Do You Have?

I <3 my ninja....for surgery #1 I just used my regular blender, for surgery #2 I got the ninja...I use the single serving size almost daily, so easy to clean, works great on ice.

Sigh, I made the mistake of attempting to make a heartfelt reply to that freaking thread and got accused of taking pot shots....self righteousness at its best. Sheesh.

No more lap bands in my area?

I had a lap and for almost 3 years, decent success but much misery, had to have a revision due to prolapse. ANYWAY at the time of my revision my doc and I had this discussion on the shift in bariatric procedures. There are many factors at play (FYI I'm a physician assistant so my appointments with him tend to be 1/2 patient/doctor and 1/2 medical politics). I can't speak for every bariatric surgeon but for mine, reimbursement for the band, fills, etc is very good. They get paid well for very little effort, I personally put no weight in the argument that it's all about the money. The fills and follow up on a lap band patient essentially guarantee continued income. His personal issue with the band was the increasing complication rate. In fact, as of last fall, he was still performing bands, but no longer recommended them, he only did a band when patients specifically requested them. I am not band bashing, don't jump my butt, but PERSONALLY I think there was a huge influx of patients several years ago looking for an easy fix and the band was all the hype. It's quick, it's easy, it's reversible. I think a lot of surgeons jumped in looking for easy money and not thinking of the long term maintenance. I think a lot of people jumped on board because A-it worked, and B-it's a relatively easy procedure, again, not thinking of the long term commitment needed. We are now seeing the results and complications from this. It's not a bad surgery, for the right people, but I do think it got pushed hard for not necessarily the best reasons and now we're seeing that taper off to a more normal level. I love my RNY. Should have gotten it in the first place. Yes I dump, I'm one of the few. The vast majority of RNYers have no issues with dumping. This was the right choice for me,but it took me twice to figure that out. Yes my plumbing is slightly rerouted, yes I will have to take Vitamins for the rest of my life because I have malabsorption. In all honesty, I don't care! It's working, it feel fabulous, that's what matters. This is what works for me. Can't we all just be friends??? We have so much knowledge and experience we can share if we pool our resources.....
  8. I would guess more likely from the insanely ridiculous hormonal fluctuations that come with the diet change and weight loss....

    Nurses As Bariatric Patients

Perhaps medical professionals are more comfortable with surgery as an obesity treatment and/or have better access to the surgery? I know since my band and eventual RNY we've had several nurses asking about it.... Just a thought

    help me calm my nerves

I'm post-op 9 months so I'm out of all that mess . What gets my panties in a bunch, is the docs that require all kinds of extra stuff (such as the losing of x% of your weight) that insurance couldn't care less about. A lot of the insurance policies are very basic, surgery approved if patient has BMI >40 and has documentation of previous weight loss attempts. But some of the programs really add on what's required. Sucks for us. Personal pet peeve? Surgeons that make it sound like losing weight pre-op is just a piece of cake...if only

    Is It Normal?

All I has to have was an EKG and blood work the week before but call Monday and make sure something hasn't been overlooked. You may not need anything but if you do, yes, it should already be done! Hate to get to the last second and have someone say 'oh whoops, we forgot'... Good luck!!!

    help me calm my nerves

Uncontrolled diabetes increases (significantly) your risk of complications during surgery and causes issues with healing so some (no all) docs require your A1C to be less than 8 or less than 9 (which is still not at a controlled level) to try to decrease the risk of these complications. I'm a bit baffled by them saying your sugar was too low though....low is what they were trying to achieve ??? Good luck! Hope they do that A1C soon!!!

    It's Oh So Quiet ...

Revision from band to bypass...get those liquids in! Makes all the difference in the world!!! Good luck, hope they figure out your numbers and get you straightened out

    So... What Are My Chances?

Just be frank (but nice) and tell then you've met you max and would really like to try to get this done before 12/31. Some docs do take time off, some don't, some just do a day or two so really can't help ya there though. I'd say, if he's usually 4 weeks out, you've got a decent chance of making it! Also, if you get a date in January, ask if they have a cancellation list and if so can you be added? You may have to be ready to roll with 2 or 3 days notice though. Good luck!!!!

    It's Oh So Quiet ...

Bad how?? Just post-op yucky, achy, exhausted? My magic cure was getting up and moving around and my heating pad. And resting when needed. I had a pretty tough case with my revision, lots of digging around and cleaning things up. Fairly certain my heating pad saved my life . Yes, it is early, sorry you've had such a hard go of it. Hopefully this will be a new beginning for you.

yup! Found out early, no harm, no foul. Was kinda fun being back in the game though. Briefly.

Well that fizzled mr. Sweet is just a little (okay a lot) too needy. That became painfully clear while I was out of town for a week. No nakedness was shared, for better or for worse

    It's Oh So Quiet ...

ive tried reviving old threads, pretty well fizzled. So I'm just jumping in where ever hanging with the sleevers a lot because they're pretty warped!
  19. I STILL have people telling me that...I recently found a work ID with a photo of me at 300+, I've started flashing it when someone says 'you were never THAT big' the facial expressions are AWESOME

    Nicest Thing Said To You?

"Look at that cute little ass, it's so tiny!!!" From my nurses at work. "Your mom is hot" from the kiddos 9 year old girl crazy BFF.

    Broth Question

Yes it's broth (as long as it's clear and totally strained), but watch the salt. You can always make homemade broth. It's much tastier and less sodium.

Then you'll love me cuz I'm the queen of dumping. One of the lucky few. (Seriously, NOBODY. Dumps....I dump off everything carbish.) If your looking for RNY drama, look up the threads 'negativity' and 'the count down begins for boob job'. Those are the last 2 really stupid moments I remember. Sometimes you just have to step back and think WTF???

Don't stone me...I'm an RNY, not a VSG. I used to have a band. My band was hell. Even following the golden rules and seeing my surgeon, etc, that beast was not for me. (Sadly, I knew not of O'brien, perhaps that was my problem???) I got SLAMMED on lap-band talk when my band prolapsed and I had to have urgent removal (couldn't tolerate fluids....minor issue) for daring to say anything bad about the band. Now, keep in mind I was in the lap-band complications forum and really all I said was I was so glad to be rid of my band and I felt so much better without it.... The responses I got were frighteningly vehement and almost cult-like...it was crazy. I tried to hang around a bit thinking some people might want to hear the flip side but ended up bailing. It was ridiculous. Essentially if you said anything anti-band (the phrase 'the band is not for everyone' is anti-band FYI) or said anything positive or even neutral about the other surgeries you were ostracized. I ever got that from either the RNY or sleeve boards. (Not that we don't have our crazies...we just had a doozie a couple weeks ago, but the VAST majority really seem to just want to help). Also, y'all are a freaking riot. It appears the vast majority of our RNYers are bailing ship or just too shy to jump in the pool naked with the rest of us so thanks for being my amusement this week.
