    Newbie...looking For Answers.

You have to weigh the pros and cons....yes there are risks associated with the surgery but the risks associated with obesity are horrible. Why do you friends say it's not worth it? What kind of problems are they having? My mom had bypass 31 years ago, lead to her changing her lifestyle and she is a rock star, looks great and could run me in to the ground. Yes she takes daily vitamin d and monthly B12....but so worth it. Have you considered a band or sleeve? The weight loss isn't as dramatic but if the bypass scares you it might be worth considering. Whatever you do, I encourage you to take your life and future into your own hands and become a happier and healthier you while your kiddos are still little and before you miss so much of their childhoods. Good luck my friend, you can do tis!

    Wandering

3 years after deciding to get a band, 2 1/2 years after actually getting it, and 4 days after band removal secondary to slippage, I find myself lost. I've known for over a year that I would eventually have to have my band removed, he and I were just not a good team. Hormones, stress, allergies, they all set him off in a pissy mood and I wouldn't be able to eat for days. I had to keep my band relatively loose or the week before and during my period I couldn't eat a thing. But I kept off 70 pounds, something i would not have ever done without him. I lost just over 50% of my excess body weight, making me about average. And now I'm recovering from a band removal that was supposed to be conversion to bypass but could not convert due to damage. I am not a bandster nor am I a bypass patient. I am simply me, wandering alone for a while while the all works out. Physically I'm healing. Still sore and achy but progressing nicely. I will be fine. Emotionally I am totally caught off guard! I did not expect to feel this lost. I know I will be fine, I always am but a little lost and lonely for now, which is not somethingi am used to!!!

    Why Cant I Stop Bingeing?

I don't want to tell you how to live your life but please be careful and please be honest with the psych/therapist. I know we mostly see the psychiatrist as an annoyance in our journey to weight loss but they truly are there for a purpose. Years ago I knew someone who had a gastric bypass. Surgery went fine but 5 or 6 days post-op she went on an eating binge for several days, she'd eat until she threw up then eat again until she threw up. In the end she tore something internally, was rushed to emergency surgery, and passed away. This is an extreme case but you need to be as mentally prepared for the journey ahead as you are physically. You and the therapist need to work through this and get you to a healthy place where you can make the best of this surgery. It isn't a quick fix and it isn't to be taken lightly. I wish you all the best and good luck!
  6. When nothing else would pass, slowly sipping warm tea usually worked for me....when that didn't work I knew. Was in trouble. Best of luck!!!

    It's Out!!

I was the first surgery Wednesday and was allowed to go home after 6 pm same day. I would have been happy to stay 1 night an get good drugs but my doc swears I was insisting post-op that I'd be fine to go home same day. Naturally I was drunk as a skunk and have no recollection of even seeing the man tat day. I was on clear liquids a That day and told to advanc as tolerated. I did full liquids Thursday, mushers Friday, and today just tried to be careful, no major hard solid proteins just yet. Happy to say each and everything passé through easily which hasn't happened to me in months! Just take it slow and easy and you'll be fine.

    Band Removed

My doc has had 5 slips in 6 years of placing bands (I am number 5, yay me!) he did say that one of the four prior to me was a slip and an erosion so I know they can happen together. I know my pre-op paperwork included slippage and erosion as possible complications and therefore I wouldn't stand a chance at getting 'financial assistance' if I'd considered pursuing that avenue (I haven't, I'm a firm believer that sometimes **** just happens although my surgeon has made it blatantly clear that this slip was 100% my fault and not his). Before talking to a lawyer you need to look through everything you signed pre-op, willing to bet you agreed that slippage and erosion were known and acceptable risks.... That said, good luck! This whole thing sucks :/

    Band Erosion & Removal

Have to agree with offensive but to each his own. As I learned long ago ther are many many out there who just know so much more than I do and are experts at everything. I just wanted to say good luck. Had my band taken out lat week after a major slip I believe had been going on for a long time. Also having a whole lot of emotions I wasn't expecting associated with it. I wish you the best and hoe you heal quickly and please do updat us from time to time.

What Do I Need For The Hospital Stay?

If you do take jammies make sure it's something you don't mind getting stained or yucky. Between the iodine they put on you, the catheter, IV, blood draws, etc, there's lots of room for gross staining stuff. I wore the gown with an extra gown to cover my bum....best feeling in the world when they finally let me put my panties back on!!!!! n guess I was not born to be an exhibitionist:D. My list of necessities: chap stick, lotion, deodorant, tooth brush and paste, socks with rubber grippy things on the feet to walk (feet were freezing, actually I was freezing all over so kept the socks on all the time), phone and charger, iPad and charger, hair clip. Stretchy clothes and bra for the ride home and pillow to hug on the ride home.

    Post Op Complications

Thoughts and prayers are with you. Good luck and keep us updated!!!
  17. Found out Thursday my band had slipped. Found out Friday I'd be having surgery this Wednesday to have it removed with my choice of replacement (the nurse originally said he'd be putting in another band but after all the issues I've had I told her I'd go with nothing before I had another band and magically it became my choice!). If I have no serious damage once he's inside he will do RNY at that time, if there's anything that needs to heal I will be closed up and come back in 6-12 months for the RNY. I've had 5 days to prep and learn everything I can about pre and post op diets and have spent the weekend nesting and trying to get everything ready for the next 6 weeks or so. I'm frantic!!!!! Although a 5 day liquid diet is soooo much better than the 2 weeks long misery before! Wish me luck Wednesday and keep your fingers crossed that there will be no complications and I can go straight to bypass!!!!

    Anxious Would Be An Understatement!

Sadly I had a ton of inflammation and extremely thinned stomach wall from the prolapse. They took out the band and sent me home. In 6-12 months I can try again :/

    Band-It No More

Banded December 2009. De-banded August 1, 2012. And rather sad about the whole affair. From the beginning my band and I have not gotten along well. I've had more unfills than I had fills. End result was a slipped band with a prolapsed stomach which resulted in excruciating pain and misery. The surgeon had hoped to take the band out and convert to a by-pass while I was on the table. However, once inside he found my stomach to be very irritated and my stomach wall to be extremely thinned out from the prolapse and he felt the risk of complication was too significant. So now I'm home, no band, no bypass, and terrified that the 70+ pounds I've lost with the band will be chasing me down trying to reattach themselves. I can schedule bypass in 6-12 months depending on how I heal. ::sigh::

    Liquid Diet Starts Tomorrow

Cry your heart out!!! Your ending a relationship. If you're like many of us, food has been your constant companion, what you turned to in hard times and how you celebrated good times. In a way you are losing one of your best friends. In the end, it's a good change, but still a very hard and stressful change. You'll do great but go ahead and cry it out

    Light Headed/ Dizzy

Hope it straightens out soon! Hate that light headed swimmy feeling!!!!!
  22. SoccerMomma73

    Smoking?

My surgeon checks the nicotine levels as well and well not operate on someone who still smokes, says the complication rate is so much higher that it's just not safe....

    Pre Op Appointment Today.

Oh how horribly disappointing!!! Fingers crossed all goes well for round 2!

    Light Headed/ Dizzy

Very common with low blood pressure....maybe with the weight loss and healthy diet your BP is running slightly low? Make sure you are getting enough fluids and move slow! If its not getting better let your doc know.

    Pre Op Pic Thread!

This is pre-op before my band in 2009, about 295. And this was this past May, around 235, I'm about 10 pounds less right now, 2 days pre-op. (and oapparently my son is growing up way too fast!!!!!)
