  7. About 2 weeks after getting banded I realized I'd lost my lifelong companion....my 'friend' who was there for every celebration, every heart break, every important event in my life had been marked by food....I had not expected the feeling of loss that I felt!!!!! I wallowed for a few days then moved on but man I was a shock!

    I Am Thankful....

It was a rough few months I've been approved for bypass. The original plan was to convert to bypass when they took the band out however the band had done a significant amount of damage and we are giving my stomach 6-12 months to heal....for now, it's all on me!

    I Am Thankful....

Not once since my band was removed last Wednesday have I woken up in the middle of the night with stomach acid dripping out my nose and/or coughing my lungs out. I no longer have excruciating chest pain when I eat! I have eaten celery, raw carrots, and apples with peel!!! And I haven't thrown up once!!! And I survived a whole week without gaining any weight gonna be a long six months, but one day at a time I'll make it.

    Band Has Failed

Actually after seeing the inflammation and other issues inside, my doc would have made me wait for another band as well. You may be lucky and have no problems but sometimes you just need time to heal. Best if luck. I know it's hard :/

    Update On My Slip....

I wonder where the draw the line between minor slip and slip? I will warn you, my non-minor slip caused a lot of inflammation and scar tissue in my stomach that now has 6+ months non-banded to heal before I can have another procedure. Good luck, I really hop it just pops back in but if the reflux returns or you're having trouble eating get back in!!!!
  17. I agree with not getting another band. I know it works for some but after discovering how much damage I have from my slip...just not something I would consider again. Again, like above, be honest with yourself, did you do what you need to do to mak this work? Not blaming you or pointing finger but it really is hard and at such a young age I would have never followed what I was supposed to. Good luck!!

    Thoughts

I actually wrote a letter to my son in case I didn't make it home :/ I am typically ms. Happy go lucky and little gets to me! But you are looking at a major procedure, there are risks, I think the fact that you're taking it to heart is probably a good thing.

    Getting Started With Insurance

Call your insurance company first and ask if they cover weight loss surgery at all and if so what are the requirement (co-morbidities, 6 months supervised weight loss, etc) some companies have an exclusion and will not pay under any circumstances, some are easy and simply require a letter from your doc stating this is in your best interest. After that, if covered or you are willing to self pay make an appointment with your PCP. Prior to that sit down and write a list of all the diets and exercise programs you've tried and a list of all the physical and mental/emotional problems you have because of your weight (the obvious like high blood pressure or diabetes, and the not so obvious like back or knee pain, fatigue, depression, etc). The more ammo you have, the better!!! Also, shop for a surgeon. I went with the one who is 'supposed to be the best in the area' and he and I just don't mesh, wish I'd chosen someone else, particularly now that i have had major problems. Best of luck as ou begin your journey!!!!

    Band Has Failed

Snack-keep in mind this response is coming from someone who just had their band removed due to slippage and is now waiting 6 months for her stomach to heal so I can get a bypass.... You've lost 80 pounds but still have 100 to lose? If you're happy with that weight and are able to comfortably maintain it with your band then the band is definitely something to consider. That is a huge accomplishment and you should be proud! If you worked harder on diet and exercise could you lose more with the band? Are you trying to lose more? Yes, you're likely to lose more with the bypass and some studies are now saying the bypass may even be a 'cure' for diabetes. Neither is a miracle and they both have their downside. If you've been comfortable with your band and feel like, with some effort, you can get more weight loss then I say go for th band again. I had problems from early on and am just not willing to do that again. The few people I know with the sleeve have had very disappointing weight loss with it soi really can't give you more info on this one...sorry.
