    A Big Fat No!

Hey there! Good luck making your decision. I recently had my band removed in an urgent surgery due to slippage of the band and herniation of my stomach. I won't say don't get a band. I will say I wish I hadn't gotten a band :/ I did get my BMI from 50 to 36 and keep it there, but I've had a couple years of problems as well. I will be getting RNY sometime next year, after removing my band the surgeon discovered I had a significant amount of damage from the band that needs time to heal. Take time to research and be comfortable with your choice, ont just rush in because you ate redy to do something now.... Good luck!!!!.
  2. I am recently debanded following a major slip and herniation of my stomach. I had my band 2 1/2 years and lost and kept off 70-ish pounds (about 50% of my excess body weight). My BMI went from 50 to 36. I started having issues with my band about 6 months post-op. for years I had vomiting (or technically BPing) even brushing my teeth would make me sick. I had recurrent heaviness in my chest and an almost choking sensation in my throat. I was not a bad girl. I followed the majority of the rules and did not eat things I was not supposed to. Looking back, the band was not for me. I've always been one to pick up stomach bugs easily and have major allergy issues. If I was stressed, congested, near my period...anything out of the norm, my band would tighten up and I'd have problems, even with almost nothing in it. The band is not evil. Many people here do fine with it. But the band was not for me. I wish I had started with gastric bypass. One of the things the band proponents speak of is the easy reversibility of the band, it can be taken out fairly easily but there is a lot of scarring, strictures, and other issues that may be permanent after removal. Good luck with your decision but don't go into either surgery until you are comfortable with your choice!

    Decisions To Make

I had a band for 2 1/2 years, removed 2 weeks ago, bypass sometime next year. I had some luck with the band (from 295 to 225) however had a lot of problems with it as well. Threw up all the time, even just brushing my teeth, chest pain, constant pressure in my throat/neck. Eventually my band slipped and caused stomach herniation and I had to have urgent removal....I don't hate the and, but wish I'd done bypass to start!

Told I Need A Conversion. Anyone Done This?

I'm at the in-between stage. Had an urgent band removal 2 weeks ago slipped band, puking my toenails out). The original plan was to remove the band and convert to a by-pass at the same time, however, much to my chagrin, once my doc got the band out I had a lot of damage, inflammation, etc, so he took out the band and told me I need to wait 6-12 months for healing before the next step. This stuff is HARD emotionally!!! Look up RNY Talk, same format as lap-band talk, the have an entire forum for conversions...lots of good info. Best of luck as you work through this...I can't speak for the by-pass but if I can help in any way I'm happy to!
  7. Not a food but don't forget the stool softeners!!!!!
  8. This takes me back to many conversations I've had with older folks who grew up on farms having bacon and eggs every day for breakfast and fried chicken or chicken fried steak for dinner and are now pushing 90 and healthy as a horse....they ate fat but had minimum refined/processed carbs (fresh fruits and veggies yes, but no chips and candy and such). They were also extremely active...have to agree, I think there's some truth in what your doc is saying.

Crazy Story From Pre Op Class

Years ago, at a hospital I worked at, a patient had gastric bypass, (the old fashioned ope way) did her 3 or 4 days in the hospital, went home and had a massive binge. Dunno if she ate so much so tore something or threw up so much she damaged something but eventually started vomiting blood, came back to the hospital, opened her back up to try and find the injury. Similar story, ended up septic and died.... A cheeseburger isn't worth it!!!!

    Vomiting (Not Pbing) And Lap-Band

Yes and it hurt like hell...... Then the next time I got the stomach bug I actually did vomit which was mst unpleasant with the band.

A (Rare) Compliment To The Band

FYI your nurse pulled that statistic out of her butt. Yes a lot of people gain the weight back but it is not 99%...makes me wanna slap her :/

A (Rare) Compliment To The Band

I am being totally obsessive about everything i eat right now. Not trying to lose but I would like to maintain until I can get my bypass. My fitness pal has become my new addiction . seriously, how much easier would surgery be at 225 lbs than 295???? Moving, walking, and breathing are all easier, surgery would have to be too!!! Just know that sometimes bands get jacked up, not necessarily something you did or didn't do. Stay active, focus on the Protein, and take time to heal. We are here to help in anyway possible!!! Oh and if it hasn't hit already you're probably going to hit a mourning phase and an anger phase with the loss of your band. There is a HUGE emotional component to unexpected band removal at I was totally unprepared for.

Why Do I Need So Many Unfills?

You need a heart to heart with your doc. This sounds like a slow slip where your stomach pouch and/or esophagus slowly start to stretch and eventually push the band out of position. It may just be a lot of inflammation from bad GERD but it needs checked out better. You at least need a swallow study to look at band position and stomach position and maybe an EGD. Refluxing that bad at night is super s art and can lead to aspiration which can lead to really bad things. Be careful and go see your doc!!!!

    Endoscopy, Reflux, Vomiting Blood

And....I'd stick with liquids until this is resolved, if nothing else your stomach is irritated and needs time to heal, if there's something more serious going on, food could get you in trouble.

    Endoscopy, Reflux, Vomiting Blood

FYI, one of the signs of my slip and herniated stomach was that when I did throw up sometimes it was stuff from the day before....the part of my stomach that was herniated through the band had made a nice nasty pouch that just held stuff... Seriously did the GI doc know you had a band before he got I there? The whole 'I thought about stretching it' thing horrifies me!!!! With the bleeding I'm really concerned you may have an erosion but he totally should have seen that on the scope....

    After Surgery

I hate to say this but sometimes I think all the docs think about is less, less, less....when my band slipped my doc chewedmy butt out for eating 1 cup of food over a half hour setting....which is EXACTLY The amount and time the nutritionist gave me....
  17. I've read and been told by my surgeon that after an erosion you should never have another band. Your stomach will heal from the erosion but it's never going to be the same and the risk of repeat erosion is very high. My extremely conservative surgeon also doesn't like to sleeve after erosion, prefers to bypass. Good luck! Keep us updated!
  18. SO, I am constantly reading about dumping on here....don't do this or that, you'll have dumping. In reality, of the dozen or so folks I know who have had RNY, 1has occasional dumping if she's really really bad, the others have none. Is it just something everyone here is concerned about or is it really that common and my friends are just lucky?

    4 Days Out

Just because you can do it doesn't necessarily mean you should do! Glad you're feeling fine but be careful!

For Anyone Debating To Convert To Sleeve

Studies show that patients who had a 'healing period' between band and sleeve were less likely to have complications such as leaks...I would not recommend pushing your surgeon for 1 surgery if they are recommending 2. Also I have 2 close friends who had the sleeve about a year ago, neither has had complications but neither has lost much weight either. Do your research! I'm thrilled the sleeve is working for you but recommend everyone look at all the options and not make a judgement based on 1 persons experience. There is a vertical sleeve talk and RNY talk website you can learn a lot from as well! Good luck to all of you!!!!

    Throwing Up Daily.

Maybe he just doesn't want to waste his precious skills and time with free fills so he's a complete and total ass??? I didn't like my doc either (although you doc makes mine sound great!) so every one of my fills was by his nurse practitioner, loved her to death! But not a problem for me any more obviously!
  22. We call it band hell....you're so not hungry at all and a switch flips and suddenly you are starving. IT SUCKS!!!!! I drank Water all day long in an attempt not to eat. Thank God It only kicked in a week before my puréed foods started! I lived off retried Beans after that, only purée that really stuck with me.
  23. After 3 years of hearing about unjury I finally broke down and ordered the sampler yesterday. Y'all are so gonna hear about it if it sucks!!!!!!
