Hi everyone..after lots and lots of research, I attended a seminar yesterday and I'm ready to take the plunge with the lap. However, as I was sitting there, something hit me like a ton of bricks! I am self pay and it's a big investment...I'm a teacher, divorced, with 3 kids so I don't have excess money laying around. But if for some reason, I have a complication and have to go into surgery (slip, erosion, etc) will my Humana insurance cover that? Thanks for any info! :w00t:

had lap band and surprise hernia repair
lisaky71 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I woke up on friday after having my lapband put in, i was told the dr had to fix a hiatal hernia too. Did any of you all have to have these 2 surgeries together? Do you think recovery takes any longer having both of these done together? thanks, Lisa -
I'm getting frustrated beyond belief...got banded a week ago today..and was doing fine. Dr. had to repair a hernia at the same time but i've heard that is common. Got banded on a friday and felt so good i went back to work on following tuesday. While at work, i had a little coughing spell and it KILLED my port with each cough. i tried to hold it but I mean it almost brought me to my knees. It felt like my port was being shook and then it was followed by INtense burning. Ever since that episode, my port hurts everytime i bend at all. If I feel a cough coming on i get scared to death. i took wed off and was doing a little better until u guessed it, i had to cough yesterday...it almost felt like something was ripping in my port area and then that burning feeling. Guys i can't tell you how badly it hurts when I do something. I've had 3 kids and nothing compares to this pain. I'm calling dr again today and hope they tell me more than last time. Anyone had this much trouble with port? I'm wondering if he put it in the right place or is something wrong? thanks for listening! lisa

Please help me figure this out...I'm scared and mad!
lisaky71 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone...please bare with me while I give you some info first and i really need some input on this one. I have a couple of diff issues going through my head. First of all, i was banded on Friday, so I'm only 5 days out. I was doing great, very minimal pain, no gas...just feeling pretty good. Well, yesterday I decided to go back to work. Well, I knew right off the bat in the first couple of days home that it really hurt to cough. I asked about it and the dr. office told me it's normal for it to hurt to cough and to try to hold a pillow against my stomach when i do..but yesterday at school (I teach) I felt a cough coming on. I tried to fight it and then had to cough...not a full out cough because that would have killed me, but a muffled cough holding my port area the whole time. It was so excruciating in my port area that I thought I was going to go down to the floor...i even had tears running down my face. I went into the hallway to gather myself and then ab out 30 minutes later, I had to cough again...I am NO wimp with pain, but im telling you, it almost had me in tears again. It was like a knife punching in my port area then followed by an intense BURN that lasted for minutes. Ever since those episodes, I have been in pain when I move...especially bend or do anything other than just sitting still. My other incisions are fine, it's just the port area and it's only when I move. I'm wondering if I've damaged it somehow...flipped it? pulled a stitch? I called my dr. after all of this yesterday and the nurse said it was normal and that the port was in muscle and that scar tissue can be very painful. I just don't know if she really "gets" how much this hurts. I'm home today laying on my butt trying to recooperate. But of course I'm worrying a little. I'm self pay and prayed the whole time I wouldn't have any complications because it took all i had just to get the surgery. ANy thoughts at all? Thanks for being here you guys...i appreciate it in advance. :smile2: Lisa -
5 days post op...HAD to chew...here's what I did...
lisaky71 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone...I've been reading all of these people struggling with the liquid diets pre and post op and I'm right there with you! Not only was it physically TOUGH for me, it was as equally mentally excruciating for me. I guess getting banded was cutting off my drug of choice...FOOD. So when all of a sudden, I had to go to a pre-op all CLEAR liquid diet, I about couldn't make it, but I did. Now I am 5 days post op and feeling really well. Except for the longing for palatable food! So i called the dr. office today and she said I could reintroduce creamed Soup..like cream of chicken, pudding, yogurt, icecream and cottage cheese as long as a chewed really well. Well, I started with some cream of broccoli soup that was heaven...ate almost the whole can with the added Water, then 1/2 cup of Mcdonald's soft serve ice cream with an added teasppoon of Peanut Butter added in...then later I was able to eat a cup or so of won ton soup WITH the noodle chewed up really really well. Then to top it all off, my kids were snacking on some ritz crackers and I ate about 10 of those...again, chewed up until they were like soup in my mouth, but still...the whole time I was worried I was screwing up! ANy thoughts on this? I seemed to tolerate everything fine. Is it strange I can consume that much soup in one sitting without it bothering me? Should the crackers have bothered me? Thanks for any thoughts...you don't know how much better I feel to have finally had some food. I felt like a real person again. My dr. didn't really give me guidelines for calories during this 2wk period. Lisa -
My surgery is on Friday and tomorrow night I am supposed to drink a bottle of this lovely stuff....did everyone have to do that?

TN girl...Seriously?? you showed Lamborgini? I definitely know that pony! What a cutie to say the least! I've heard of the name of your other horse too. It's funny you're trying to sell your gaited pleasure horse when that's exactly what i really WANT to show. I showed a gaited pony as a kid and of course was hooked. Nothing like racking, huh? Looks like you just had your surgery a few weeks ago. Are you adjusting to it? We also look like we're pretty close in what we have to lose too. Do you go to any of the KY shows? Our first is Lexington Spring Premiere and then we go to the spring Alabama show. I'd love to meet up with you and say hi at one of the shows. :scared2: I'm keeping my lapband kind of hush hush with people outside my immediate family and friends...so some of my barn friends won't even know. To me, it's just a personal decision. I'm so glad to have "met" you on here! Minxz....lease a SADDLEBRED and show! To me, they are the most elegant, graceful horses and I can't imagine being involved with anything else. Don't get me wrong, I think ALL horses are beautiful, it's just that saddlebreds are in my blood and truly are my passion. Keep us posted if you decide to give one a try! Lisa

Hi everyone...I have surgery this friday and my preop diet starts on wednesday. I know i shouldn't complain because it is just for 2 days, but I called today and they said no protein shakes...i am only allowed clear liquids like broth, clear jello - didn't even know they made that, clear popcycles (lemon lime), nothing colored...I'm honestly wondering how I won't get weak...If i to too long without eating i experience low blood sugar and get the cold sweat and shakes. Somebody tell me I can handle it!

Small world, huh?? I ride with Hill View Stables/ Steve & Suzanne Crabtree in Kentucky! I've shown since I was a kid, but took the last two years because my daughter, SHelby had moved up to equitation and you know how expensive it can all be. However, this year I've leased a country pleasure horse from the barn...Heirrelevant and I'm so excited to get back in the saddle!! What do you show in??

Oh, that is so helpful to know! I don't know much about dressage but I LOVE watching it. I live in KY and we are getting ready for the 2012 Equestrian Games in Lexington. They have been busy building new arenas, barns, etc. It's going to be amazing. I ride with a trainer too. Saddlebreds are pretty high strung..well, I"m sure you know because I think they are used sometimes in dressage too...so I have to be ready to roll once I"m on. I was hoping to not be off that much time, but I'll let my body decide if it's too soon. I'm a little bummed that you said it was uncomfortable for awhile to ride...are you talking about your incision area or where the port is?j By the way, congrats on your weight loss and equally exciting is shopping for a new horse...HAVE FUN with that!! Lisa

Thank you all for your replies...TN girl..what kind of horses do you show? I show saddlebreds! I guess you can relate to the fact that horse show season is right around the corner and I want to be ready! LIsa

Hi everyone...I'm scheduled this Friday and it seems like that is ALL I can think of right now! The surgery center called and told me all the do's and don't of that day and she said no nail polish...do you know if acrylic nails are okay?? (I know that is SOOO not important but I didn't want to go get them taken off if it wasn't nec) Second question, my dr. only put me on a two day liquid diet...i keep hearing you all post about 2 wks pre diets. I'm worrying about it a little but I guess I'll just rely on what he told me. Oh, one more question... ...I've heard mention of powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein drinks...do you know if you can have them for the two week post liquid diet? If so, about how many a day should you have? Thanks so much for answering my random questions..I'm sure a lot more will pop up in my mind over the next few days! Thanks, Lisa Surgery Date 1/29/10 Pre surgery weight - 196 Goal - 140ish

Hi everyone! I am scheduled for lap band on Jan. 29th! I know it's prob normal, but one minute I'm raring to go, and the next I'm asking myself what the hell I'm doing! :scared2: I'm in KY and will be getting this done at 7:30. I'm crossing my fingers everything goes smoothly!!:cursing:
