Some people don't have to do pre-op diet?
LeighaMason replied to Itsforlife's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I don't know, but it shrinks your liver and makes the surgery safer for you. If your surgeon doesn't have to fight the liver he has a better chance of placing the band where he wants it for optimal performance. Its worth it. -
March 29th and very emotional

Sure, sliders are high calorie foods that are easy to eat. They vary for different people but can consist of Ice Cream, Milkshakes, smoothies, Yogurt, pudding, Soups, chocolate, Breakfast cereals, Chili, any type of sauce added to meat, plus tarter sauce on fish can make it a slider. They are called sliders cause the slide right through the band into your big stomach leaving the pouch empty and calling for more food. It defeats the purpose. Usually these are high calorie, low nutrition foods. If you get too tight you can start just eating high calorie, easy to swallow sliders and then you are getting too many calories and not enough nutrition plus you feel hungry. Triple whammy! Also I was banded within 1 month of my initial consultation. But do research it before you jump in. (Jumping into things is my specialty, I would lose my mind if I had to wait a year) -

I hope this is some practical advice to help you get back on track. :wink2:

A lot of after surgery eating is determined by how tight you personally want your band. I have mine on the loose side, once I reach goal it will be even more loose. I have good restriction but I still eat strawberries, tomatoes, salad, every veggie, steak, chicken, pasta, rice, eggs and bacon, but I have to avoid bread and tortillas because they make me uncomfortable. But I feel like after I am at goal and I loosen the band some I will be able to eat bread as well, just not as much of it. I think people will not stay on a very restrictive diet forever, if you are limited to just a few items you will get bored and start on sliders. So I have my and on the loose side so that I have a large variety of food choices. It is a matter of how you decide to work your tool. -

You know if you are doing this for the right reason if you are doing it for yourself. If you were doing it so your husband would find you more attractive then I would question it. But if its for you, its the right reason. I was low BMI, (35) I would almost consider mine to be "cosmetic surgery" but it makes me feel better so I am happy with my decision. I had failed every diet plan on the planet. So yes you will have doubts about it working. It works if you do. Positive attitude is everything.

I think it is worth every dollar ($10,200 of them) and every minute (5 months of them). You get out of this what you put in it. If you try hard it works hard, if you try a little it works a little. (Medical conditions excluded from this statement) I would only consider cutting my gastric system in the case of medical necessity, such as 100 pounds or more overweight with co-morbidities such as heart disease, diabetes, etc. I only needed to lose 65 pounds so I consider my lap band surgery to be somewhat cosmetic. Really ask yourself if you are going to work with the band, if you are then get the surgery. If you are thinking I will just get the surgery and then everything will be handled, wait and do more research. :wink2:

I forgot to add that I only unfilled .3 of a cc so I went from 5.1 to 4.8 in a 10 cc band, you don't have to have a complete unfill to eat better. You could be just .2 or .5 away from being in the perfect spot, so you could find a Dr who would slowly unfill you at .25 a time until you were able to eat. Maybe that would help with the anxiety that you are going to regain weight. And don't forget, if this doesn't work, and you feel you are gaining weight, you can always put it back in. Your not talking about removing your band just taking out some saline. :frown: -
Expectations and experience: how do they match up for you?
LeighaMason replied to Ohm's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I didn't feel like I have been banded long enough to answer this question but I am 3 pounds from 25 BMI so decided to give my input. I will start with my history. We don't eat out, we cook every meal and almost everything from scratch. We buy whole grain bread, premade semolina pasta, canned tomatoes, and tomato paste. This is our only concession to processed foods. I grow fresh veggies in the summer and buy them in the winter. But I eat too much. I have been hungry my whole life, I can eat a whole plate of food and go back for seconds. I never snacked, or grazed I ate 3 large meals of quality food a day. Now it is physically impossible for me to overeat. I am full for the first time in my life, in the past when someone said they were full I never really knew what they meant. This is exactly what I was looking for and expecting when I had the surgery. I knew that I ate the right things just too much of them. I couldn't be more pleased. -

I got a fill and I was too tight, I couldn't eat more than 500 calories a day. I finally went for an unfill but I was scared of regain so I kept on with the 500 calories a day. I started gaining back, so my friends on here convinced me to start eating 1000 calories a day last Tuesday, I have lost 2 pounds in 4 days by eating quality foods at 1000 calories a day. Plus I am no longer suffering from cold skin and fatigue. -
