I found a valid use for soda pop...for me!
MizKelly replied to sistasassy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everything that I read/researched, that my doctor and dietitian told me was not to drink if food got stuck because it made it worse. Like I said in my last post....."It just goes to show you how every doctor is so different". Your doctor lets you have a liquid with your meals mine doesn't. -

If your food is stuck you aren't supposed to drink anything. Drinking makes it worse!! If you get up and walk around that helps or burping helps too. I can't believe your doctor says that soda pop is OK to have. It just goes to show you how every doctor is so different. -
I had my first fill at my 2 week post-op (2cc's) and my second fill 3 weeks later (2cc's). I had pretty good restriction with my first fill and really having it with this second fill. Not having trouble with drinking but after about 2 tablespoons of food I'm done. Sometimes I can get a little more in if I stand up and eat. I haven't had any trouble with pudding so if I feel a little light headed I have that for a snack. It's sad when you really want to eat that 2 oz of meat and you can't!

CherieLynne, don't forget that Prednisone and cortisone have steroids in them and those can actually make you gain weight. I went in for a fill yesterday and had this talk with my doctor because I have been sick with bronchiolitis and I had to go on a steroid in my nebulizer twice a day and was worried about weight gain. So while on steroids your weight loss might not be as much as if you weren't on them...Just keep that in mind. I know my weight loss was very low while I was on steroids plus I haven't been able to work out. Good Luck!!

My coffee is the one thing I still allow myself to have. I only drink one cup a day and don't always finish that cup. I use splenda and my regular flavored creamer. That is my treat!!

It's amazing how every doctor is do different on how they do everything. When my doctor did my fill he had me lay down and put my arms over my head and he said he could feel my port real good and told me to get ready for a little sting. I didn't get any novacaine or numbing spray just the shot with the fill in it. When he was done he put a band-aid on me and had me sit up and drink some Water. I didn't know what to expect so I took very little sips and whoa! I felt the restriction right away and in my throat area. He said some people feel it in the stomach area or in their chest or throat and when I feel that then I need to stop eating. It really felt like a big air bubble and I needed to let out a big burp!! I get that feeling with the first few bites of eating then it subsides so I am not sure if that is just air or what it is. I hate that it takes me so long to eat and that my food gets COLD before I am even finished. Who wants to eat cold scrambled eggs?:sifone: My doctor said if the 2cc's bother me then to let him know and he would take a little out. I am more thirsty with a fill, anyone else notice this?

Hey everyone!! Well I had my post-op appointment today and I've lost 35.4 lbs!! My doctor was so excited and very proud of me!! He also did my first fill (2cc's) and I go back in 2 weeks and if everything is going fine then he will do another fill. I graduated to pureed/mushies so now I am trying to decided what I want for dinner....Oh the choices!!

I haven't gotten on the scale yet...I need to go buy a really good one plus I am waiting for my 2 week post-op appointment. I knew I was going to have some swelling right after surgery and didn't want to get on the scale and get disappointed. But I know it's going down!!
-
I think the no drinking with eating will be a little hard a first because I will have been on straight liquids for 6 weeks once I move on to the pureed/mushies and I have been so used to having something to drink with me at all times! If you go out to eat you could always not order a drink to help with the temptation but if something were to have a little trouble getting down you would want a drink so you could have a sip to help wash it down. I asked my nutritionist/dietitian if I were eating something spicy/hot if it would be OK to have a sip of Water if I needed it and she said it would be but just not to take big drinks. This journey is going to be interesting...My bf had it done last June so I am always asking her questions.

I am 6 days post-op and I am so sick of being on liquids!! I feel water logged most of the time and it's frustrating me. Trying to get 64 oz of water in a day plus my protein shakes is so hard. I was never a big "drinker" before this so it's really hard to get all this in now post-op. I did fine on the 4 week pre-op liquid diet but I think I am just really getting burned out on it now. February 3rd is when I see the doctor and will get to switch over to mushies!!

Not everyone gets the gas pains in the shoulder. I was banded on Monday and have NOT had any problems with gas pains in my shoulder and very little in my tummy. My doctor was great about getting it all out of my system. But walk as much as possible. They had me up walking at the hospital a few hours after surgery. Actually I had to get up and walk every 2 hours. I know a lot of people have said Gas-X has helped them but the gas they are putting in you is just going into your tummy area and not into you intestines. So I was told NO on Gas-X.

I am leaving for the hospital in about 45 minutes...My stomach is a ball of nervous!!:devil: I will be a banded girl in a few hours!! Kelly

My surgery is Monday and I am excited and scared. This is my last weekend to be a "fluffy" person. I am looking forward to this new journey in my life. I hope the surgery goes smooth and they remember NO surgical tape as I am highly allergic!

These are the shakes that I have found that don't seem to bother me....I have to have a total of 80 grams of protein (shakes) a day... RTD 51- (51 gr.protein) and they come in chocolate, Vanilla, and Peanut Butter Cup......(I like the Vanilla) Oh Yeah!- (32 gr.protein) I really like the strawberry Muscle Milk- (21 gr.protein) The Vanilla Creme is my favorite and I just got the Cookies and cream and it's OK. Pure Protein- (35 gr.protein) Besides the regular chocolate, vanilla and strawberry they also have banana creme and cookies and cream....I like all flavors I also like the EAS 100% whey powder that you add with Milk. I buy flavored egg white powder at Whole Foodst and I add that to my SF Carnation Instant Breakfast and Milk. I am trying to mix things up so I don't get so sick of one thing since I have to be on the liquid diet for 4 weeks. Good Luck!

11 more days until surgery! I can't believe how fast it's coming up. I've been on my pre-op liquid diet just a little over 3 weeks and have lost 23 lbs. I will be so glad when I get to the mushies!! I can't tell you how ready I am to have scrambled eggs!! Mmmm Good luck to all those going in for surgery in the next week!!

Hey La La, I am being banded on the 18th! I started my pre-op liquid diet two weeks ago and today is the half way mark, YAY! It will be here before we know it!! I am getting so excited but also very nervous. When do you start your pre-op diet and what is it like? My doctor likes his patients to stay over night in the hospital but it all depends on how they feel after surgery. I really don't want to have to stay over night but I guess I will just have to wait and see. Lets stay in touch! Good Luck!:blushing:

I am 41(F) getting banded on 1/18/10. I have to be on a liquid diet for 4 weeks prior to surgery and it starts tomorrow. I know I can do it but I also know it's going to be hard. I have wonderful support from my husband, family and friends. I am excited to start this journey but also nervous. -
I don't know what your diet is like but I have to have close to 4 shakes a day with at least 20 gr. protein each and no more than 250 calories. I did find some shakes that had more protein then 20 grams of protein and my nutritionist said those were fine to drink as long as I got 70-80 grams of protein in a day but my shakes also have to be very low in carbs and sugars and these are. Here is what I have found that I personally like. RTD 51- (51 gr.protein) and they come in chocolate, vanilla, and Peanut Butter Cup Oh Yeah!- (32 gr.protein) I really like the strawberry Muscle Milk- (21 gr.protein) The Vanilla Creme is my favorite and I just got the Cookies and cream but haven't tried it yet.... Pure Protein- (35 gr.protein) Besides the regular chocolate, vanilla and strawberry they also have banana creme and cookies and cream. I also like the EAS 100% whey powder that you add with Milk. I buy flavored egg white powder at Whole Foodst and I add that to my SF Carnation Instant Breakfast and Milk. I am trying to mix things up so I don't get so sick of one thing since I have to be on the liquid diet for so long. Good Luck!

Everyone Please remember to follow your OWN pre-op diet that YOUR doctor gave you. There is a reason for it. If you have any questions about it or are having trouble following it give your doctor or nutritionist a call and they make the changes that you need. What works for one person may not work for another. It would be a shame to get this close to surgery only to make the wrong choice. It's better to be safe than sorry. You doctor/nutritionist is there to help you!

Don't worry Mary you should be ok. Do you have a nutritionist that you have been working with that you could call? I have to be on my pre-op diet for FOUR week and I am on day 9. It's been pretty hard and I did have a tiny bite of chicken tonight because I could not get my stomach to stop rumbling even after all my protein shakes, jello and chicken broth. Each day gets better because your body will stop asking for food. I lost 10lbs in the fist 6 days! Not eating Christmas dinner was rough but I made it through!! Good luck on the rest of your pre-op liquids...YOU CAN DO IT!!
