My story is a pretty typical one.  I was a big kid, and bigger teen, and an even bigger adult.  I'm career driven, have excelled professionally, secured a doctorate in my field at the age of 32, yet had little control in my food intake and weight gain.  I'm a gay man who started coming out at 27 and had a lot of conflict with that.  All of this centers back to my pattern of stress eating, etc.  Well, the older the get, the more I am just done with all of that.  Lap Band has been on my radar for a long time, but I never pursued it because I figured that insurance would never approve me.  You see, I don't have any major comorbidities.  I have a touch of apnea, and the occasion ache and pain, but other than that...To my suprise and relief, my BMI was high enough to be approved and after the 3 month supervised weight loss period (in which I lost about 25 pounds)  I was approved.  I've gone through all of the pre op tests and processes, and my big day is Wednesday, December 16th!  It hasn't been a perfect road, but between the supervised weight loss and the pre op diet, I am down over 30 pounds from where I was this summer and I am excited about finally getting the upper hand on what has been a life long problem.  I know this is no cure, and ultimately any long term success will be entirely up to me, but the thought of being able to walk into a mall and walk out with something I bought off the rack, the thought of having the confidence to talk to someone in a bar or club, the improved chance that I won't drop dead in 10 years, well those are all things that will be worth it.
