When people ask, do you tell them about WLS?
Notinks replied to Maineman's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
When I had my LAP band in Jan 2004, I told very, very few people. I didn't want to deal with comments, questions, or judgments. I revised to RNY 16 days ago and I am telling anyone who asks. It is just so much easier than trying to be coy and making stuff up. I lived like that for 10+ years when I had to go puke in a restaurant bathroom, etc. and it is just way more freeing to not have to do that. That being said, I'm not going to post about it on Facebook....I don't really want every fringe acquaintance to know. Maybe I'll feel differently once I am at goal. -

How Did You Find and Choose Your Bariatric Surgeon?
Notinks replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had a revision from LAP Band to RNY. Only one dr in town would do it in one surgery. I wanted one surgery and my insurance would only pay for one surgery. -
@@Bingcherry I was sent home on an acid reducer too. It's a dissolvable Previcid. I remember him mentioning it at my last pre-surgical visit, but I don't remember him saying it would be for a limited time. I think it is more of a precaution against ulcers later.

Band to possible RNY revision questions
Notinks replied to neyney75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am newly revised, so I won't be able to answer all of your questions. I had a band placed in January 2004. I lost 90 lbs but then had continuous problems with adjusting, had an infected port, leaky something...and eventually developed reflux. I didn't have a major complication like a slip or erosion either, but I couldn't keep a fill in due to reflux. My dr. didn't really steer me one way or the other, although his nurse seemed to be in favor of the sleeve...talked about how that was what "most people" were doing now. I chose the RNY because of the reflux issue (there can still be refux issues withthe sleeve) and because I wanted the malabsorbtion and dumping to keep me honest. I also wanted to go with the tried and true this time rather than the latest new surgery. I had my surgery one week ago today, so I can't tell you how successful it is, only why I chose it. I can tell you that since surgery, I have had zero real hunger or head hunger. For some that lasts a long time, but not for everyone. Good luck with your choice! -
@@Fab@Forty When do you move to mushies? I am on liquids until I see my dr. on the 30th. I gained 10 lbs on IV fluids! They are all gone plus a couple of more, so I am on the downhill finally. I feel just like you do about how hard it is to get in the liquids and proteins. I think I need to schedule myself to eat because if I don't I really don't think about it. I am doing a lot of water sipping though. It is a very, very weird feeling to be burdened by the need to eat and not having any hunger or desire to eat. It is different than when I had the band because with the band I was just physically stopped from eating and wanted to eat more. Now I have no desire. I went grocery shopping today (that was a bit much for me physically) and got my daughter ice cream. I told her to eat it away from me, but I am not sure I would even mind if she didn't. No thank you, I'm stuffed

@@Angelyaya5 I could probably get in that much Protein if I drank Protein shakes all day. Not sure. I might get too full though. My nut said no more than 3 oz/hr and wants you to have 3-5 "meals" a day. When you make the shake you described, do you drink the whole thing at once?I have been drinking Water in between, I am doing Vitamins. I am drinking the Premeir protein for the most part. It is 30g of protein, but I only drink a third of it at a time.
-
How are you getting that much Protein? I am 5 days post op and am barely getting 30. Are you limiting the amount of shakes you drink in a certain time? My dr wanted me to limit it to 3 oz/hr and I just do that 3-4 times a day and drink Water in between.

New Food For Post Ops...

I got an abdominal binder at a local medical supply store. I paid too much for it, but I had to find one somewhere where my hubby could find it easily. It has really made a world of difference. I mentioned it on another forum I am on and a lot of people talked about getting them at the hospital. I sure wish I had! Anyway, I have it now and am off pain meds long enough to go for a drive today. I've lost the 10 lbs of IV weight I gained.

The liquid Lortab is nasty, but I am taking it! I feel like I need some sort of belly support band like pregnant women wear because gravity causes my incisions to hurt when I am upright.
-
For those of you who had the LAP band out in the same surgery , are you still in a lot of pain? My surgery was Monday and I have been home since yesterday. I have liquid Lortab, but I still have a lot of pain, especially in my largest incision. It is impossible to bend over.

I can't! I can't do it anymore!

Are we told to crush them because they are too big to swallow, or does it have anything to do with the new pouch not being able to fully digest them in time? -

Yep I'm tomorrow too! Getting very jittery--not just the conscious "oh my gosh, it's tomorrow" kind--but he physical my heart is racing like I'm on caffeine kind. I'm going to a show with my daughter this afternoon. Hope it helps me to relax a little! Good luck to all of us!

Great! There are a bunch of us on here with that date (myself included)!

I think it is just an "easy" way to cut calories dramatically and lose a lot of weight in a short amount of time. The goal is just to get you to lose some so there will be less fat around your liver and the surgery is easier. My dr. doesn't require ANY diet or weightloss prior to surgery. I'm doing it anyway just because he did say it makes it easier and I'd like to do anything I can to make it easier because he has to remove my LAP band at the same time.

I'll let you know soon! I'm having my band revised to RNY on the 15th! -
Are you required to lose x number of pounds before surgery? My dr. doesn't even require the pre op diet. When I saw him yesterday and asked why, he said that it is too hard for people to do and that he couldn't do it himself if he were expected to. I am trying to do it anyway because I want to lose fat around my liver and do whatever I can to make surgery easier, but he wasn't concerned about it at all. From what I have read, it isn't the liquid part that is vital....they just give us a liquid diet because it is the lowest in calories and results in a very fast weight loss. I think if your calories are still very low you are okay.

Starting mine today too! I am almost done reading the book Unbroken which is about the horrific experiences of a WWII soldier who is a castaway and later Japanese POW. He lost half his weight due to extreme starvation...down to 60+ lbs at one point. Reading it has put me in a mindset where I am feeling pretty full most of the time.
-
Also starting liquids on the 2nd for surgery on the 15th. My dr. doesn't require it but I want to do whatever I can to make surgery go better. Might be harder to do knowing he's not requiring it!
