    Help!

Are you craving the crackers or are you craving the salt? If you're craving the salt, chances are you're dehydrated, our bodies naturally crave salty foods when we're dehydrated as a round about way to make us drink. If it's the crackers then it's more than likely carbs you're craving, I ate low-fat yoplait to cure my carb cravings for the first few days. That type of yogurt has a high carb content, so even though it's not bread it satisfies the craving.
  2. For Protein shakes -I like the design whey products - it's the same products they use for the biggest loser, in fact in most stores you'll see it labeled two ways one with a plain label, and one with the biggest loser label. The biggest loser is usually a dollar or two more. They don't have a lot of flavors, pretty much just chocolate or vanilla but I've found I can do lots with it, make pudding, hot chocolate, endless amounts of smoothies, etc.. The mainstay of my diet is designer whey protein powder, fage brand greek yogurt (20 gram of protein in every serving) scrambled eggs and chicken cooked various ways. The fage brand greek yogurt is also a good sub for sour cream, also mixes well with SF Jello, etc... I made some tuna with it the other day, ehhh not so much, definitely took some getting used to. But something simple like grilled chicken with tzatziki sauce (greek yogurt sauce) served over baby spinach is a great high protein and low calorie meal.
  3. Union coverage is VERY different from non-union coverage, the average worker is not union and does not have that same luxury. Also your union more than likely "shops around" unlike most companies who stay with the same providers year after year and don't question contracts or increases. I can assure you that your situation is not the norm and most non-union people with insurance can attest that they have received increases and not decreases. Someone else who works in insurance and with actuarial department, who sets the prices and increases (usually 5 yrs in advance) stated the same thing up above. Enjoy your decreases and enjoy working in a union because it definitely has it's benefits! :smile2:
  4. Water and Protein... find something that's easy for you and fits into your uber busy schedule. smoothies, protein, and some exercise just 30 mins a day will make a HUGE difference. A smoothie can keep you full, hydrated and not feeling deprived, while keeping your calories down. For example...I make a strawberry smoothie that tastes like a milkshake (recipe is in my blog) it makes 32 ozs, which is easy to sip on and stay full through out the day. When you need something to eat, make the right choice, don't buy the cheese curls, don't keep them in your house, your 3 yr old doesn't need them either. Replace them with carrots, etc.. If you're like me, if it's there, I'll eat it... just remove it completely. On Sundays pre-cook your meals and Snacks for the week so you can just grab them and go, all you'll have to do is heat them up. It's much quicker than going through the drive thru or trying to make a quick easy (usually bad for you) meal. What you're going through is quite normal, what in the navy we called "west pac widows", I know it has a term in every branch, but basically we go through a period of mourning and adjustments, weight gain is usual indicator. In your case you're not gain, but you're not losing either. Is this your husband's first tour? Usually on the first tour or two we're sad, by the 2 or 3rd we're motivated and our husband's don't recognize us when they come home lol. If you need some support or just someone to talk to, message me. I've been there, so I understand. You'll get it together.. put a picture up of something that will remind you not to eat and to get to your goal, put it everywhere on the fridge, in the cupboards, in you car's dashboard, etc....

    No Energy

Do exactly as the dr said...walk walk walk.. even if it's just up and around your house. I paced the the hallway the first 3 days. The more you lay around, the worse you'll feel. You're 12 days post-op you should be feeling MUCH better by now. Unless you have diabetes or something else that makes you heal slower, you should be feeling like normal. But if you haven't been up moving and walking as much as you should (around 200 steps every hour) then you're probably feeling the residual effects of the anesthesia and that's what's making you feel sluggish and lack energy. Could also be a sign that you're ready to move on to the next stage of food, or take your vitamins.
  6. STD is usually an optional (i.e. additional cost) insurance to the employee. However, what you pay is based off of what your employers contracted rate is and it varies by company, amount of employees etc... Your rate will go up (if even by a few cents) every year, even if nobody in the entire company went out on STD, it's the cost of business. So the "You defrauding the company is making me spend more" argument isn't really valid. Because whether you realize it or not, there's these people called actuaries who predetermine what the going rate will be whether an event happens or not. Even if nobody committed insurance fraud for 5 yrs, wouldn't matter, the actuary has already accounted and forecasted for it and your rate WILL go up, regardless. I've done benefit administration (a wide title and term that includes various positions like claims examiner)on both sides for companies/HR and for the insurer and most recently *gasp* for Metlife. I'm sure none of you took the time to speak with the poster privately as I did, to gain a better understanding before I posted anything. This is one of those topics everyone will have their strong opinions on, but much like belly buttons, everyone has one. My comment about MD had a precursor to it that said unless you can deal in or speak to the facts and truth of it, then your opinion isn't invalid unless you have Md next to your name. - But honestly even then, unless she's your patient it wouldn't matter. So Flychica for example- working in insurance.. knowing what it's like to process the claim and rules, FACTS, etc.. Valid. Anyone else with like experience, valid. Even if found to be wrong, opinion is still valid because they're educated and experienced in it. Everyone else, not so much. That's not discounting anyone as a person or their thoughts, etc... but it's all just a bunch of fluff.. when you cut through it all, what are you really saying? Are you educated on it? Or just making assumptions and forming opinions? Apologies if anyone was offended - that's not my intent. However, ganging up on the OP isn't exactly fair or nice of you either. As you'll come to find about me, I speak on nothing unless I have something to truly add and contribute to a forum or conversation, and when I do speak I'm always certain that I can back up anything I say with facts, references, etc.. just how I operate.

    California Omlette - Banded Style

One of my favorite omlettes is what's usually called a California Omlette or a Santa Barbara Omlette. Typically it has bacon, jack cheese, spinach, avocado, tomato and sour cream/salsa. Today I made a band friendly version in a scramble that was delicious. 2 eggs 2 pieces turkey lunch meat 1/4 cup fresh baby spinach (half a handful) 1 slice Jack cheese Fresh diced roma tomato Fresh diced avocado First dice lunch meat and put in pan to warm,as it's warming add preferred method of cooking agent, evoo, butter, etc.. If using a spray, spray the pan first. Next add baby spinach and allow it to cook down, mixing with the diced turkey meat. Once spinach is soft and wilted add 2 eggs and scramble the mixture as it's cooking (or pre-scramble eggs in bowl depending on your cooking level) stirring/scrambling constantly will insure soft light fluffy eggs. Once the eggs are about done add cheese and turn off the heat.. eggs will continue cooking while you mix the cheese into them. Once cheese is melted plate the eggs and cover with desired amount of diced roma tomato and avocado. (about a table spoon of each is good) mix into eggs and serve. You can add milk to your eggs for protein, or you can serve with fage plain yogurt as a sour cream subsitute. Eggs should be soft and moist, not dry and hard. It will look like a alot of food, but in reality it's about 6oz total. Eating that puts me right at my limit for food and being full. You can also cut in half and make with 1 egg, 1 meat, 1/2 cheese etc... Let me know if you try it, and how you like it!

    Strawberry "Shake" Smoothie Recipe

I made my best protein shake yet today. My friend turned her nose up at first but then decided to try it, "I just want a lil' bit..I might not like it" she says as she tastes it she looks at me surprised and is like OMGOSH this is really good!!! And it's all healthy?!!??!?!" as she darts back toward the blender for more. It tastes just like a strawberry milkshake and it was delicious! The recipe I'm posting made 2 shakes.. The first time I split it with someone, the 2nd time I've just been sipping it all day... The upside it has SO much protein in it and doesn't taste like it at all. Ice (I fill the blender about a 3rd of the way) 4 tbsps Fage 0% greek style yogurt (I use the plain but you can use the vanilla) 2 scoops Designer Whey Protein Vanilla 6 frozen strawberries 1 splenda packet 1tbsp Agave Nectar (can use stevia or honey, etc...) 4-8 oz of skim milk (depending on how thick you like yours) Blend and enjoy! The 2 scoops of protein powder = 36 grams The 4 tbsps (I do heaping ones) = 20 grams The 8 oz of skim milk = 8 grams The strawberries are around 1 gram so we won't count those.. In this one mix you have 64 grams of protein. Easy, delicious and filling. It's around 500 calories for the entire blenderful, split it and it's 250... either way that's great. Protein powder 100 calories per scoop serving Skim Milk 100 calories 8 oz serving Fage 0% yogurt 120 calories per 8oz serving Strawberries 50 calories per 12 oz serving Agave Nectar 60 calories per 1tbsp serving For me that's all I've had today and a sugar free jello... and I've met my protein for the day while staying full and feeling like I have a delicious strawberry milkshake :tt2:

    Strawberry "Shake" Smoothie Recipe

Yes it is.. I even made tuna with fage the other day, that took some getting used to, but it wasn't horrible. I'm just waiting for when I'll be eating pitas so I can do some chicken gyros with the tzatziki sauce, even though I think why wait.. let me try it over spinach sans pita.. do that tomorrow I've eaten for the day, I'll have the shake the rest of the day. I'll throw the chicken on the foreman grill and make the sauce, tonight probably so I have it to snack on over the weekend. Thanks for the heads up on costco, didn't realize they had it in bulk like that, since it's hard to find in regular stores! Yes I will DEFINITELY be heading to costco tomorrow.

    When reality strikes...

So last night I spent my NYE at church. We had a great time and as usual a potluck, we tend to have sandwiches as the main course because they're quick, easy and people can do what they want with it, add mayo, etc... Being banded I now see how much we as a society over eat! Let me explain... The deli didn't have enough time to make our order but they did have some ready made footlongs, you know the ones made piled high on a whole loaf of french bread? This is the same sandwich we usually order but it's cut in 3 instead of slices. We usually order a 6 foot sub and it's gone within minutes. So last night we got 6 sandwiches to equal the 6 ft sub we usually buy. They brought it into me to prepare and I looked at the huge hunks of sandwich and now in my banded eye and mind cut them into reasonable portions.. I took every third and cut it into 4 mini sandwiches. Wouldn't you know, we ended up with 3 unopened sandwiches and leftovers from the first 3.. this has NEVER happened in all of the gatherings we've ever had. To go a step further, I kept the bread from my mini sandwich, ate the meat, cheese and lettuce and kept the bread. I purposely mashed it and balled it up to see what it would look like chewed and in my stomach. I was disgusted... me, the bread lover. The person who would get a hot loaf of french bread with some butter from the store and would eat it as a meal. I was so disgusted by the ball of dough now sitting in my hand, to realized that it came from just that lil' mini sandwich and was about the size of my upper stomach/stoma. I thought about before how I, like everyone else, would take a thick slice of sandwich or two and eat them. I never realized just how much I was putting into my body.. And reality struck me... Yvette THIS is why you're fat. Your whole life you've loved breads, even meals that come on breads, burgers and sandwiches have been the mainstay of my diet. Going upscale? Beef Wellington please... that's right I like my beef wrapped in dough.. Pizza, I don't even like pizza, but I do like the crust covered in parm and pepper flakes. You name it and if it was doughy deliciousness I've probably eaten it. Carbalicious doughy deliciousness. If it was sugar or frosting coated or filled even better. I have a completely new outlook, but it's going to be a struggle. Even after being disgusted by the ball of bread, I let out an excited fat girl scream when someone came in with Hot Krispy Kremes... I limited myself to one and enjoyed it, savored it. This must be how the other half lives, because never in my life have I nibbled and noshed on something that tasted so good. If it was good I ate it, ate it quick and as much of it as I could. Prior to being banded, I have and would have eaten a dozen of hot glazed krispy kremes by myself. Then justify it by not eating anything else the rest of the day or saying "they're just so good and like air, they melt in your mouth" Gone is that person, it's physically impossible for me to do, but I've also renewed my mind to food, it's purpose and it's effects. Disgusted by the memory of me going to Krispy Kreme and ordering a dozen or a dozen and half. Eating 6 and feeling full, looking down to see the icing mess on my shirt. Going home or to work with the rest and some how losing track until they were all gone. Ugh.. seriously it makes me feel a multitude of emotions, sad, disgusted, pathetic, angry, etc.. How do you do that to yourself and not even realize what your doing. What is so wrong in your life that Food is your only comfort? I know the answer to that question and it's not something to put here for all to see but WOW.. Really Yvette??? How far gone do you have to be where you're in relationships with men encourage you to eat like that, or have fights with your husband about food and donuts, and other food related nonsense. What a site that must of been, wolfing down donuts in the parking lot of the Krispy Kreme, I remember that look he gave me, and now 7 yrs later, I get it. It was disgust. On the upside I've done something about it, so the past can never be again... That's the new reality and it's definitely struck me, whether I was ready for it or not. 2010 here we are....Let's make the most of it. This was my last fat christmas, my last fat NYE, my last fat anything... Life solutions, not resolutions. Do everything in excellence or don't do it at all.

    No More New Years' Resolutions!

Right attitude all the way, I'm SO curious as well, but I'm going to take it day by day. Although I keep thinking to myself as I'm in the middle of celebrations "This will be my last christmas fat", this will be my last new year's", etc... I'm excited about all the changes to come. Like I said from the beginning this is all about life solutions not resolutions. We'll get it done!
  14. Some notes from an ex-benefits administrator 1.) your surgery IS an acceptable use of your STD (so is having a cold for more than 7 days etc...) any medical reason to be off work, that you have a signed dr's excuse for. 2.) Most STD plans require a 7 day waiting period, so be prepared to have a week's worth of PTO to cover that week, unless you pay extra for the "no wait" that some insurances offer. In some cases they require 14 days of a waiting period but 7 is most common. 3.) She pays for her insurance, and it's there for her use. If she has a medical excuse for 6 weeks, Metlife will allow her their pre-determined allotted time to be off work. And anything further would require a treatment plan and office notes. Even if the dr says 6 weeks he/she will be required to fill out paperwork explaining why the PT requires a longer than normal recovery time. And although many of you don't agree with her methods and she may not have properly presented this; she's entitled to use her STD and she actually does have a reason to be off work if it's approved by her doctor and if you read between the lines of what she wrote you'll see it, if you're trained in it. She's burnt out. Surgery (although elective) is a major life event and stressor, with what most would already consider a very full life load (ft job and school) the added stress of life changing surgery and the adjustment period required gives her enough of a reason to be off work for a few weeks. All of this was more than likely recognized by her DR, although not a mental health expert, and he provided her with the excused absence. Everyone is entitled to their thoughts and opinions on the matter, but unless you can deal and speak to the facts and truth of the situation or there's an MD at the end of your name all of these opinions are for the most part invalid and just pixels on a screen. Just my 2 cents anyways... Happy New Year all and to the poster hope you get the assistance you need, if you need it
  15. A friend of mine who had the lapband done earlier this year received a card that basically says she's had a surgery done and that it's medically impossible for her to have large amounts of food. Therefore restaurants are to allow her to order off the child menu, buffets charge the child price etc... I asked about this and people looked at me like I was crazy... Does anyone else have one of these and if so how/where did you get it?
  16. @Melinco - I totally understand your frustration. I had the same situation with my mother, she told EVERYONE, even when I wasn't 100% sure if I was doing it and asked her not to tell. I told her I'm only telling her, I didn't want everyone to know and she could tell my sister that's it. She decided to tell my sister in front of her other sister (who is not related to me or my mom.) Then she tells my brother, who then tells his brother (again not related to me or my mom) so now my siblings and their siblings know (which is why i told my mom NOT to say anything) and the brother's wife leave my mom an open message on her facebook about my surgery. I was SO mad, I still am... Then I confronted my brother about it and he's like oh man you know we were just sittin' around and it came up. Ummm yeah because you all have nothing better to do than talk about me?!?!?!??!?! They all want to say oh c'mon it's family.. ummm no it's not.. I'm not related to them, I see them once or twice a year, if even that much. There's people alot closer to me that I haven't told and the bottom line is they're wrong for telling my business, especially when they were asked not to. The one thing I asked was for people to respect my privacy, and of all people my mother violated it and then it spread like wild fire. I actually wasn't going to tell her I had it done, but since I live alone, etc.. I kinda needed to. It's all about people not respecting your privacy and more importantly your CHOICE. I get very upset when someone takes my choice from me, especially on something that isn't theirs to share or really be a part of.
  17. Interesting topic...I sit on the fence with this and teeter back and forth. I tell certain people and straight out lied to another group of people, which hurt me to do, because I'm not a liar. But even with them I said "I've reconsidered having surgery" which was true, I reconsidered for a moment, then reconsidered back to having it. I didn't feel the need to advertise either way. My fear is not telling people or working out (I joined a gym and lost 140+lbs by sweating it off 5 years prior to surgery) it's that I've learned in this life that not everyone needs a front row ticket to your life, and VIP only holds so many. I do a lot of public work, traveling, speaking, etc... I don't need or want the hassle or the headache of comments, special prep, etc... from people who "think" they're helping. The majority of people don't realize this isn't a "diet" you can eat what you want, just not as much. But as soon as people find out they become supportive by becoming the diet police. "You can't eat that", "You better not eat that", etc... I went through that recently with my mother of all people as she proceeded to tell me all weekend what I could and couldn't eat. I finally had enough and told her, I can eat what I want, explained WHY I could and HOW I could. I then explained everything to her. Which I had done many times before but she was SO against the surgery she wasn't hearing me. Educating her to the point, she's now considering the lapband for herself. If I'm asked I'll tell as there's no shame in my game, but if it's not someone in the front row of my life, there's no point in advising them of the situation. The same as I wouldn't advise them about any other medical condition or treatment I'm undergoing.
  18. Yvette1026

    Having slight second thoughts

I would be a lil' concerned with anyone who doesn't take a moment to second guess major surgery and the implanting of a device into their body. It's perfectly normal, especially as you've been successful losing prior to the band. I did the same just before mine, as I lost 32lbs in just 3 weeks prior to getting it. As someone who's lost 140+lbs on my own, and kept the majority of it off, people didn't understand WHY I was doing this, especially after another astonishing weight loss just before surgery. It's simple - the up and down HAS TO STOP. You'll be given a tool to help aid you in your losing, making it omni present in your mind of what you can and can't eat, how much to etc, etc... If you're like me, all it takes is a bad few days and you're off the diet or "lifestyle change" bandwagon. There's no real option for that here, unless you have self-esteem issues and will purposely sabotage yourself and not lose weight (Sorry for those of you who gained with your lapband but barring any medical issues that's what happened.) but you don't strike me as the type. You seem like the type to do well in everything you do. I took a week and thought it all out, did I REALLY want to do this??? Yes I did, and at a day shy of 2 weeks post-op I am SO glad I did.
  19. Yvette1026

    And, the scale stands still!

oh and that was an intention "weight" pun instead of wait just saying... forgot to quote it lol
  20. Yvette1026

    And, the scale stands still!

This is why I don't own a scale and have told myself I will ONLY weigh at my dr's office on my bi-weekly visits (minus a time or two of jumping on the gym scale). It's been soooo tempting to jump on the scale and see, but my appointment is Tuesday, I can weight til then. I know my face is thinner and my clothes are loser, one of my bras just literally slides right off me as I'm wearing it.. I was walking around the grocery store yesterday trying to keep my bra on and my jeans up.. I had a flash of me standing there with in my t-shirt and panties, wearing my bra like a mini-skirt with my jeans around my knees if I didn't hurry up and get outta there lol. You have the right attitude for this and your surgeon seems to have prepared you for everything!
  21. Thank you for the message and yes it's through Him and because of Him that all of this is possible. I got this done, mostly so I can do more work for him. I've been blessed with rapid recovery and healing and easy and quick weight loss thus far, it's been 2 weeks as of tomorrow and I'm ASTONISHED at the results. All I can do is PRAISE HIM! Blessings be upon you and yours. It's a pleasure to meet you!

    Is gum chewing okay?

Orbitz maui melon all day, every day... I don't swallow it, it's sugar free and it's been my long standing addiction.

    Still trying to decide...

I think it's the best thing you can do for yourself really. It's normal to be scared and have questions. I researched this for 5 years before I FINALLY decided to do it. I'm 2 weeks post-op on Friday and I can already tell you I love love love what I've done for myself. The #1 thing I can tell you is not to compare yourself to others. The one thing I've noticed about this journey is we may all be taking the same trip, but we all have our own road to get there. Some people can eat bread, some can't, some get sick, some are perfectly healthy. It's all about YOU and YOUR body. As for the sugar issue there's lots of great natural sweeteners out there like Agave nectar, that you can easily replace for sugar. It's not an "artificial sweetener" like sweet n' low or equal it's 100% pure, natural and in most cases organic. Besides 100% sugar free isn't a necessity after surgery, I mean it is for the first 4 weeks, and suggested while you're losing but it's not "required". Every person and every surgeon is different. Some surgeons say you can eat after the first 48 hrs, some say you have to wait 4 weeks. It really just depends. If in your second month you have a slice of cake or pie, it's not going to undo all the work you've done.. However, that's if you're able to tolerate sweets like cake or pie at all after surgery. Again, everyone is different. So far I've had no problem eating anything. I have restriction and am almost never hungry. I remind myself to eat, and I haven't weighed myself since surgery but my clothes are literally falling off me and everyone keeps commenting on how much weight I've lost. (People who don't know I had the surgery) so it's been great! If you're lucky enough to be blessed to be in a situation where you can get the surgery done, I definitely say go for it, just be sure you do your own research and make sure it's right for you. Good luck!
