Eating Solids Three Weeks After Surgery
honk replied to s2trees's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As mentioned above most of us felt like they could eat solids earlier than doctors orders. However you should not do it. I asked if I could move to mushies 2 days early and my doctor said Abosulutely NOT. At three weeks I was still on cottage cheese. -
Help, I'm Gaining Weight!!!
honk replied to JennK2008's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand you are food journaling and probalbly counting calories. In your situation where you are gaining I would not be having frozen yogurt. My doctor doesn't really want me to be so tight I cant eat food for breakfast. Perhaps you are still too tight. Are you weighing your lunch and dinner protein? -
Throwing Up... What Is Normal?
honk replied to bri_belcher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Call your doctor to ask if they put any fill in the band. Most of the time when someone is having your problems it is because there is fill in the band. Once it is taking out they are fine. You MUST be able to drink clear fluids or you will dehydrate. -
I went to a friend's 60th birthday party about 6 days post op so still on Clear Liquids. At one point my mother pointed out something on the buffet table and asked me what it was (we were sitting across the room). Now when I pointed out to her that since I was on a liquid diet and did not want to know what delicious food was on the table she did apologize. Sometimes people just don't realize how hard this is.

Feeling No Restriction & Tolerating Everything
honk replied to lillieb53's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good for you throwing away the candy bar. I think behavior changes are a major victory. As a slow loser it can depress me when I read about high/faster weight losses when I'm stalled. I think it's important to congratulate yourself when you do something today that you would'nt have done preband. My victories are often non scale but they are victories non the less. -
Feeling No Restriction & Tolerating Everything
honk replied to lillieb53's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is a will power diet right now. Buy yourself a digital scale. When your 3oz of protein (or 4 oz) is gone stop eating. Fill yourself the rest of the way with low fat/cal veggies. Even at restriction my band does'nt stop me from eating anything (well other than raw carrots). Don't expect the band will Stop you. Did you attend mindful eating therapy persurgery? If not go now. You need to develop a new relationship with food. Not to be mean spirited but Taco Bell? If you must eat fast food I recommend either chili from Wendy's or Grilled chicken from KFC (be sure to take the chicken skin off though!). -
Gastric Band Or Gastric Bypass? Need To Decide
honk replied to Bwilson21b's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At my first consult I was 334. Due to delays because of recovering from a blood clot it took me 8 months before I had surgery. I was 282 day of surgery. I have been a slow loser but this is a lifestyle not a sprint. I would not call the band a torture device. I shoot to go to the gym 7 days a week. While I am losing slowly I definatley see that the exercise leads to losing inches and my blood pressure is great for some who is 225 LBs (110/62) -
1 cc at a time (considering it's early days for you) seems to little. I would recommend you buy a good digital scale and measure your protein. My doctor says 3oz others say 4 oz. When your protein is gone no seconds. The rest of your meal should be low cal/fat veggies. My doctor does allow for fresh fruit. Personally I do not eat bread, crackers,

Gaining And Losing The Same Three Pounds, Argh!
honk replied to electronicart's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi. You mentioned giving up white flower and sugar. What kind of carbs are you eating? Personally I don't worry about natural carbs like veggies and I do eat fruit at lunch and dinner. I do not however have crackers or bread of any kind in my house. Also what kind and how much fat is in your diet? I don't have trouble with chicken breast so that's my main source of protein. -
I like low fat laughing cow cheese. You can microwave it which I would'nt do with mayo.
-
Protein shots are little vials of liquid about 3 oz. You can buy them many places including Walmart and Target. Premier brand makes a nice ready to drink shake 160 cal. 30 g protein. Available at costco. I live alone but find the membership worth it because of: CHEAP rotissarie chicken, mini sweet peppers, reasonable store brand cooked chicken breast strips, great canned chicken and pacific brand Soups for liquid mushie stage (which you will need post fills). I also get my Vitamins, and Fiber there.

I Cheated On My Pre Surgery Diet... Am I A Terrible Person? :(
honk replied to bri_belcher's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For future reference I would buy premade shakes since they will be easy when you are on the go. In general I think going off your doctors diet pre op is not as big a deal as post op. Post Op you MUST, Yes ALL CAPS, MUST follow your doctors orders. They are going to sew your stomach around the band so it stays in place. This means you CAN NOT eat solids post op until your doctor allows. -
Liquid Diet Cheating Question
honk replied to pibble11's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not the liquid so much as the high level of protein and low level carbs. By reducing the carbs your body is forced to burn first protein and second fat. The liver stores fat so you are trying to burn that off. I don't recommend going against your doctors orders but if you do I would focus on low fat high protein options. Such as 3 oz. skinless chicken breast. -
Premier read to drink are 160 cal for 30 g protein.
-
My doctor prefers patients not drink protein shakes because they don't keep you satisfied for 5 hours like real food. I do occationally have a premade protein shake (Premier brand) when I have a looonnngg time between lunch and dinner like 8 hours.
-
Hi. Most doctors say not to take Advil which is ibuprophin! Please try liquid Tylenol (or generic brand).

10 Lbs Down?Very Frustrated
honk replied to skinnygrrlatheart's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Losing 1 lb a week is not abnormal. I eat very conservatively and exercise 1 hour 7 days per week and am a slow loser. -

I had surgery at Lahey and have spoken to Amanda about my experience. They do have several NP and the one I like the most is pretty No nonsense. It is hard when she lays done the law. She is however really caring and very supportive. I think she takes the hard line sometimes because she thinks if I give you an inch you will take a mile. You do weigh more in the afternoon. Personally next time you have an afternoon appointment I would do protein shakes for breakfast and lunch so you will have a greater chance of voiding them before you appointment.

I did not get restriction until 10.6 CC's in a 11 CC band. Pretzels are a slider food! Anything that you chew and disolves in your mouth (pretzels, chips, cookies) are sliders. I agree with previous posters the two days after you should be on solids esp protein; that's what keeps you full. My doctor does'n really want me having protein shakes as anything liquid goes right through the band. Think of it as a funnel to your stomach. Liquids go right through the funnel!

I Want To Eat Cereal!!!
honk replied to spoiledbratt97's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would be careful about snacking on cereal. I had to stop buying Bare N@ked Chocolate granola because I was eating a lot of it straight out of the bad. I am not a huge milk drinker. For breakfast every day I do have non fat Chobani fruited yoghurt with the following add ins: 1/2 scoop whey isolate vanilla protein powder, flavorless benefiber powder, about 1/4 cup high protein Kashi Go Lean Cereal, and spendra (non fat is pretty sour). -
At KFC I get grilled chicken breast and pull of the skin; half the corn on the cob and green beans or mashed no gravy.
-
I would recommend low fat cottage cheese or ricotta. String cheese is a solid not a mushie. And I'm sure you know this but ditch the ice cream it is cream with sugar added.
-
1) Mushies dont fill you like solids. Get cottage cheese for pst fills. Pudding is empty calories 2) Took me many fills before restriction.

Pre-Fill Appetite...hoping This Is Normal!
honk replied to hotpink7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends on your body. I did not get restriction for 6 months. Not trying to be mean spirited just giving you my experience. Buy a food scale and weigh your solid protein. My doctor says 3 oz.
