I have also seen recommendations for papaya chewables to help digest food that is stuck. I know you realize this now but steak is not a mushie.

Is Whey Protein Powder Okay To Have?
honk replied to mztmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As mentioned above there are different types of Whey protein. My doctor says Whey Isolate only, which is more expensive. You can read the ingrediants list to find out what KIND of Whey protein is being used. FYI pre and post surgery ask your doctor what you can and can not add to the shakes. Post surgery I was not allowed to add fruit during my full liquid stage. Blending fruit was considered mushie stage. Also check the calories/fat/carbs as some brand have higher levels than others. Pre and post surgery I could add sugar/fat free pudding powder, spices, sugar free coffee syrups. PB2 is a peanut powder that I also added. It is defatted peanut powder (sounds gross but tastes pretty good). Comes in plain and chocolate flavor. -
Speak to your doctor; but mine said 2 weeks. I highly recommend a water proof MP3 player. Check them out on Amazon.

I would'nt say that I am necc. hungry; but I wonder if I were to eat slightly more protein if it would help keep me fuller longer. I can go 5 hours but when I am at work it's a long time from lunch at 12 and dinner at 8. I go to the gym after work so I get dinner late.
-
Leothelion, I would recommend not eating only carbs for breakfast. You should have mostly protein and have a small portion of carbs. FYI I only saw my surgeon for pre op and surgery I normally see his Nurse Practiioner.
-
While I agree pretzels and potato are high in carbs; I would consider oatmeal a good carb. My understanding is that it does not spike your blood sugar; and because it takes a while for your body to digest you feel full longer.

honk replied to Amanda Ehlich Titus's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am at restriction and can eat rice, pasta, and bread. I just choose not to because of the empty calories. -
I second fish. If they have mashed Cauliflower that would be good too.

Newbie With Question About Post-Op Diet
honk replied to Toddy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor follows the conventional wisdom diet that you've been seeing on line. I would get clarification from your doctor to make sure you are understanding he/she. If you have trouble with moving to mushies and/or solids so quickly you can slow down you progression. -
Had First Visit Yesterday...
honk replied to Rebecca Cain Salpacka's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think perhaps you are confusing the healing period and your eventual long term "diet". After surgery you progress from clear liquids, full liquids, soft mushies (cottage/ricotta cheese), firmer mushies (canned chicken), solids. Once you are on solids you should eat firmer foods. They will stay in the pouch longer. Anything that is liquid or mushie slides right through. Think of the band creating a funnel. Anything that will flow through a funnel will flow right out of your pouch. -
I would stop the pretzels, instead choose chicken breast or string cheese. My doctor says to eat three meals a day no snacks. Have you bought a food scale? Measure out your protein (my doctor says 3 oz others say 4). Look for a low fat greek yogurt it has higher protein levels.

I have a question. My doctor says 3 oz of solid protein. You mentioned having 6 oz. I've wonder is if I should up my protein to maybe 4 oz. I tend to eat raw veggies plain (except for raw carrots which require hummus or they get stuck) so I am not getting high cals from them. I am also about 16 months out but am a slow loser. I do an hour of cardio 7 days a week.
-
I am what they call a slow loser. It took me 7 months to get restriction. 8 months after that I felt I needed a fill so i got one. Normally doctors say 1-2 pounds per week is an average weight loss. I had lost about 100 pounds presurgery so it does not suprise me that I am more of a 0-1 pounds per week. You did not gain the weight overnight and you won't loose it overnight.
-
During my presurgery journey I had to postpone my surgery by 5 months. In that period of time I lost an additional 20 pounds. If I can do it it can be done. Buy a food scale and measure your protein. Not glamorous but also not difficult. If you would be embarrased for your doctor to see a food in your food cart don't buy it.
-
I normally eat in the 1000-1200 range. I do exercerise an hour a day 7 days a week. I am at restriction and I don't have PB incidents. Not having them doesn't mean you are too loose.

My Surgeon Has Turned Over His Patient Care!! I'm Livid!
honk replied to spoiltmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not seen my surgeon since 2 weeks after surgery. I am always filled by the NP. I would try to find a new surgeons office that will take you on. I think Lap band has a list on their site of doctors who will do fills on bands installed by other doctors. -

Help!! I'm Eating Way Too Much!!
honk replied to skintyprincess's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to eat solid foods they will keep you full longer than protein shakes. Buy a digital scale (available walmart or target) and start weighing your protein. After your 3 or 4 oz is gone stop eating. Hard to hear but that's why they call it banster hell. Eat low fat/cal veggies to fill the void. -
How Long To Wait Between Fills
honk replied to workinprogress0180's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor says 3 weeks between fills because it can take up to 2 weeks for the fill to "hit". Because the saline can migrate from the tubing into the band. I would wait 3 weeks before attemping another fill. -
Feeling No Restriction & Tolerating Everything
honk replied to lillieb53's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Elmo, my doctor says once you are healed you should no longer drink protein shakes for meals. I am also a slow loser post banding. I had lost 80 pounds prebanding so all my water weight etc was already gone. Eat solid protein 3 times a day it will help keep you full longer. -
Lap Band Newbie Needing Pre-Op Diet Advice
honk replied to MissManders's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would measure your protein to 3 or 4 oz. I would eat what you want of veggies (stay away from corn or white potatoes) as long as they are low fat/cal. IE don't cover them in cream sauce, butter or cheese. My doctor did'nt really give me a preop diet so I did do 2 protein shakes (made with fat free milk, and fruit), and one low cal/fat meal for about a month preop. -
Most people would'nt drink in front of someone who is recently gone sober; but don't realize that a food addict has the same issues. While your family does still need to eat they could be more understanding. I went to breakfast with my sister about 8 months out and she ordered fresh made donut holes; but when they arrived she said "Do you want me to put them on the booth seat so you don't have to look at them?? " Did not bother me that they were on the table but she did ask.
