  1. I agree with a previous poster that purchasing single serving ice cream will help to control your serving sizes. I am preband and use protein shakes as a meal replacement. Some of the recipes I use are quite frappe/ice cream shake like. Here's an example: frozen milk cubes; frozen fruit flavored soda water (sweetened with splendra); Davinci suger free syrups, suger free chocolate syrup, fat free/suger free pudding powder, chocolate protein powder, fat free milk, spendra. I use a single serving Hampton Beach blender. Personally I think it tastes pretty good. Calories about 220 calories. Even if you were having it as a snack you would come out better then having ice cream and you would get 30 grams of protein.

    Swimming after surgery

Please ask your surgeon. I was also told 2 weeks. I would also say that I would do freestyle versus breaststroke.
  3. Personally I am much happier to have protein shakes than Isopure. I really like Gold Standard Chocolate that they sell at Vitamin shop. I do add suger/fat free pudding powder and Davinchi suger free syrups. Also I add vanilla protein powder to Greek fat free yoghurt (and some splendra otherwise it's too sour).
  4. In high school I lost about a hundred pounds in a year. I stopped having my period for about 16 months.
  5. One thing to consider when you need to order out is a pizza place that has grilled chicken/veggie sandwhiches. You can ask them to make it with little to no oil and one piece of cheese (no cheese if you are really strick). FYI one time when I asked for less cheese than they normally add I was asked "well we normally do 3 slices how many do you want?" Three slices!!!! That's like 300 calories plus the fat. Also if you get it on syrian bread that cuts like 200 calories as well. May sound gross but I use ketchup instead of mayo a lot less fat and calories. Also as much as I love chinese and I do eat it when my friends from work go out for someones birthday; eating the buffet is still going to be bad nutritionally. Some chinese places deep fry the meet and veggies to cook them really fast and then add them to a stove top pan with the sauces. So even though you think you're eating heathly veggies they've been deep fried. I also saw on TV that a study was done that showed that people eat less at buffets if they sit with their back to the food. Also that you should walk around the whole buffet then go back and pick up your favorites. Otherwise you pick up things you don't like as much before your favorites but you eat them anyways.
  6. Are you on a protein shake type diet? If you're bored with the milkshakes see if you can have broth. That will be warm and salty and would mix things up for you.
  7. I would call your insurance company and confirm coverage of dietary meetings. My insurance covers Medically neccessary meetings with dieticians yet my dietician bills keep getting denied. Grrrrrrrr. So call them and say that the dietician meetings are required for the Lap Band approval process. If they cover the surgery they should approve the dietician meeting.
  8. If you have thrift stores near ritzy towns I would try them first. You may find clothes that still have the tags on them.
  9. For what it's worth my oldest sister weaned herself at 6 months. My mother still bemoans it today! Funny enough my sister to this day does'nt like milk in general. A few years ago there was a study that breastfed babies tended to have normal body weights over their life time becuase they were given the chance from birth to decide when to stop eating when they were full. Bottle fed babies would drink what they were given. Though I have to say that theory didn't really work in my case!

    Nsaids ?

FYI slightly off topic but there was a recent study on painkillers and prolonged use of NSAIDS has shown higher likely hood of cardio events and strokes. Dyclofenac (perscription) which I was on for a year was particularly bad and I think it had a direct effect on the blood clot I had last year (Mini Stoke). Using Aleve had the lowest heart and stroke events.

    Grr.. Noo! Need advice.

I have a really strong relationship with my mother. When she had major surgery she came to my house to recuperate. The reason I said I would contact the doctor is if my mother expected me to take care of her after a major surgery that she should'nt have then yes I would get involved. It sounds to me like the mother has made this choice and plans on doing it whether it's the right choice or not. Something tells me at her doctor's appointments she does'nt say well I have a snicker bar for a snack at 10:30, a Hershey for dessert at lunch, and then a cupcake for a snack at 4:30. If daughter can plan on leaving the house or being out of town for the duration of the surgery and recovery that's fine. But I would'nt be a nurse maid for someone who is making dangerous health decisions.
  12. Are you on a liquid diet or has your doctor told you to eat sensibly? I think most people loose a lot on a really strick 2 week liquid diet. It sounds to me that you have modified your food intake and started exercising. One thing to keep in mind is it's easy to justify "little snacks" after exercising because you just burned off all those calories! It's also easier to make bad choices if you eat out, again becuase you're exercising. I am preband dieting but not on a doctor's liquid diet. Admittedly I live alone. I no longer buy any kind of cracker, cookie, popcorn snack, potatoe chip or chidren's cereal. Nothing. Why, because I don't eat them wisely. Mindless eating. Also, some foods seem heathier than they are. Three Egg Veggie omlet with cheese: whole eggs(60 cal. each, 5 grams fat) with 2 ounces chedder cheese (200 cal, 18 grams fat) 1/2 cup veggies 50 cal., total 430 cal 33 grams fat. Same omlet made with egg whites no cheese 100 cal. In a week you save 2/3 pound of fat worth of calories.

I would be shocked that they would consider bypass on someone who already has nutritional problems. Who will she use as her "emergency contact" at the surgeons office? That person should tell the doctor that she is eating candy all the time and clearly not in the right state of mind in regards to weight managment. With bypass you can't eat sugar is makes you really sick.
  14. I would call his practice and tell them that you need either need copies of your file or the originalsn (If they make copies they will charge you for them.). Find a surgeon who will accept your previous tests etc and hopefully this will lesson the wait you have arranging for the surgery at a new office.

    Dangers of Splenda?

I am preband so I can still drink soda.

    Dangers of Splenda?

I think that equal can cause a spike in bloodsuger, due to it's chemical make up. I don't think that Splendra has that affect. I find Stevia to be crunchy like real suger and in some applications (I add splendra to my fat free greek yogurt) it does'nt work as well. My personal opinion is that health care professionals see splendra, equal as "gate way drugs". That you are used to the sweetness of fake sweateners and will be seduced into eating real sugar. Not entirely convinced of this. Having drunk Diet Coke now for 25 years I could never go back to regular Coke way to sweet!
  17. First off your SIL is being a real witch. Let me get that out of the way first. I would consider that being the 4th they were probably already planning a cook out. How would they have all the supplies if they had'nt already planned it? I find that when something hits a nerve and someone wigs out there is a specific reason. Is your SIL overweight? Does she think that if you loose weight everyone will expect her to have surgery if you are a sucessful loser? If she is thin does she think you will somehow become competition? That she won't be the only one who can wear cute outfits and shoes? Is she the pretty one? Vain people don't like to be upstaged.
  18. I agree with your husband I don't think Hudson goes well with Banks.
  19. Your period could have been affected by blood thinners you were given at surgery. As part of a blood clot remediation I was put on coumadin for 9 months. My periods were horrific. The first two days I just wanted to lay down and sleep. Very heavy and very painful. I am hoping now that I am off bloodthinners things will get better.
  20. Keep in mind I am pre-band. My doctor's office wants me to eat 3 meals a day and avoid snacks because they are afraid of mindless snacking. When I told them that I have a single serving greek yogurt late afternoon before working out they were find with that. If you eat lunch at 12 or 1 and go to the gym after work not eating dinner until 7-8 you will need (or at least I do) to have a snack in between. One of my own personal issues has been night time snacking; especially children's cereal like count chocula. I would eat it by the hand ful until it made me sick. That's the kind of behavior they want to stop.
  21. I would never impose it on them. It would definitlely be their descision only. They have see how the band has helped me. I think it is important to remember the relationship between parents and children is very sensative. As is the that between older and younger siblings. When I was younger "suggestions" or "recommendations" from my mother were really more like expectations. I agree with earlier posters that this has been a very difficult decision for me and I am 40 years old; am a college graduate and very successful in my career. I really don't think a teenager would be able to say "No" if they know their Mother thinks it's a good idea. Remember 30 years ago 18 year olds weren't even allowed to vote; I would say making a life long decision on my body is harder than deciding who should be president.

    omg help lol

If you are drinking protein shakes that are sweet could you try Chicken Broth (just liquid no veg) which would be warm and salty?

    How long

Mine could have been 2.5 months. I had a blood clot that was being treated and I had to wait until that was more under control. One thing to consider is most doctors expect you to loose 5-10% of your body weight before they do the surgery. I was expected to loose 30 pounds. I did make that benchmark in the 2.5 months but had to wait. In the last 4 months I have lost another 21 pounds so down about 50 pounds from the consult.
  24. Two things jump out at me about this. One, I don't think they should have surgery that could affect their nutritional intake before they finish puberty. My brother grew four inches his freshman year of college. Also if they are of average intelligence I don't think you should be making major life altering decisions for people who are almost of age. If they are still having weight issues when they are 20 then perhaps I would broach the subject with them. Other wise you risk them rebelling and then not respecting your thoughts on the issue.
