High cholesterol, how can i lower?
honk replied to jen36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Exercise will help your good cholesterol go up but does not bring the bad down. I have lost 100 pounds exercise every day, and don't eat red meat, egg yolks, or fried food; and my cholesterol is not getting any better. I also started a statin drug this month. You do have to get your blood work done to see how it is affecting your liver. My doctor recommended CoEnzyme Q10 (over the counter) to help with the body aches you can get from taking a statin. I started out with 50 mg twice a day and have moved to 100 mg twice a day (just because 50 is hard to find). So far I have not really had much misc. pain. I also have a family history of heart disease. For what it's worth my sister who has always been normal weight had terrible cholesterol numbers for years. After I had a ministroke (at 39) her doctor told her to stop playing around with "natural" remodies and take the medication. -
is anyone noticeing your weight loss?
honk replied to Elliottsmama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I met two friends for lunch the other day (both guys). One of them knew about the surgery and has been super supportive. The other did not know and has not seen me since I was part of a lay off last year. I have lost about 75 pounds since I last saw him. Now this guy is 1) married, 2) in Human Resources; he did not even mention my weight loss! 75 Pounds! He had to have noticed! If was'nt until friend A mentioned I had lost weight since we last got together that friend B was willing to go there. -
Pre-op-16 oz of Meal Replacement
honk replied to topazz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's how I would read it. Personally I would have 8 oz at say 8:00 am and another 8 oz at 10:00 am so that you can spread out your eating. -
I just ran a search and found the following: Boost Glucose Control is an excellent source of Protein - 16 g. If you are drinking 5 of them you are probably getting enough protein. They also have 250 calories which means you are over 1,000 calories a day. I'm sure it sucks. If it makes you feel better my doctor wanted me to do a special liquid diet that was only 500 calories a day.

Just banded Wednesday and starving
honk replied to Shorty81367's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you only having 6 oz of "food" a day? If so there's been a miscommunication with the doctor. You need 60 g of protein a day and I doubt you are getting that. At the very least you need to have protein shakes for the protein AND to not get dehydrated. -
Totally can feel your pain. If it makes you feel any better my surgery was delayed 5 months!

I used to think the baked potato chips were a good snack. For me they are a problem because I would just eat them all at once. They really don't serve a purpose, just calories with no redeaming value. If you are going to have carbs have an apple or some grapes.

Think I may have over did it today?
honk replied to Sun Rae's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you were not doing rigorous exercise pre surgery don't expect that you can start off with a lot now. Gradually increase your exercise. I swim everyday for an hour and when I started back at the gym on day four (treadmill); I needed to take a nap when I got home. I was not walking terribly fast, had zero incline and still pulled a muscle in my right lower abdomen (opposite side from the port). -
I would like to know why Bare Naked Chocolate Granola goes down just fine. Urrrrgggggg.

I see this is only your 3rd post. How long ago was your surgery? If you just had surgery stop eating solid foods NOW! Call you doctor vomitting blood for any reason is bad.

I read a post in the comments section of an article about being overweight in America and one person said they had been a drug addict (and thin); and when they stopped the drugs they started to gain weight. They got more rude comments and judgements about being fat than they did being a drug addict. That is really both sad and petrifying. My being fat is unlikely to kill YOU; but your being high driving your car is pretty likely to kill ME. Some people are just not right in the head. I once had a boss go off about fat people to her boss who is very vocal about having WLS! How could you be so stupid?! Her desire to demean overweight people was more than her desire to brownnose. Incredible.

My WLS has a sign "Please tell us if you've been waiting more than 20 minutes". I have made use of that sign in the past. Usually when I am there for the doctor. I once waited 2 hours to see my orthopedist and even got a parking ticket! Very aggrevated! I have never in my life got a parking ticket. I am a corporate recruiter and I have been stood up or been made to wait more often by Hiring Managers than I have my doctors. Though admittedly some of them are making more than my doctors. I LOVE it when they are traveling to China or India and see me online at midnight my time and instant message me to say "I see you're working I have time to talk now". Great. So excited about that!

I think the thread starter should speak to a surgeon it they have'nt already to discuss whether they are a good candidate for WLS. Even some medical doctors (as we've read many times on this site) are not informed about the different kinds of surgery. There are times when you need to change doctors. I was going to a Orthopedist who was a huge jerk. He said "lose some weight" and gave me some pills and off he went. While I did start excerising and lost some weight he really made me feel bad about myself and I never went back. When I finally got the courage to get treatment elsewhere the doctor asked "why did you stop going to Doctor A". When I told him he said "Thanks for being honest with me. Doctor's would never be rude to someone because they were black or handicaped but some have no problem being rude because your fat." Sure medical professionals can tell you things that are true but you just don't like it. But it is also true that they may not an expert on everything.

Smokers? X-Smokers? or those trying to QUIT....
honk replied to Renee1003's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second a previous poster there IS a test they can be run to check for smoking. Given the hard time my brother has had quitting smoking I would take all the help you can get. Not trying to be sarcastic at all. Why wash your clothes by hand it there is a washing machine? If you can take medication to quit take it! -
Are you at restriction? If not how oftern do you pb or have things get stuck? I have 6 cc in a 10cc band and only have partial restriction. I would feel comfortable traveling because I have not had any issues when eating.

I always bring a book.

Do you have access to the pool for other times? Is it a lap pool? I swim laps using a snorkle makes it easier to swim without worrying about breathing; and use a water proof mp3 player. Having music makes the time go by soooo much faster. I have a back issue and I have no trouble swimming.

I would call you doctors office for advice. On your ""full liquid" included yogurt, cream soups, pudding"; the only thing I could have was cream soups. Everything else waited until the week 3. My doctor did not really refer to it as mushie so I think for him mushie and soft foods were the same thing.

Removing Fill for Tonsilectomy
honk replied to breesue's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't want to be a downer but in the end this does have an upside. I had my tonsils and adnoids (nose surgery) at 17. I have a lot of trouble with perscription pain meds so I was strickly on tylenol. It's was a hard couple weeks. You can't eat very much because of the pain. You have experience with protein shakes so that is an upside. Try to get a refill immediately after surgery. The first couple weeks you won't really be able to eat anyway. So you probably won't gain a lot of weight because you won't be eating very much. They probably will have to fill you gradually. My doctor will give a new fill every three weeks if neccessary. -
typical dinner meal after surgery
honk replied to Ange2992's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Awhenry, I think you should speak to the doctor's office. At 4 weeks I was moved to solids and was told to have 3 oz of protein + vegetables. They said at restriction that I should be able to eat 4 oz at a setting. That is way more than 1/4 of a cup. Take out a measuring cup and check that out. And by 4 oz I mean by weight not by volume. -
It dependson your policy. My insurance covered all test and appointments except for the nutritionist. They only cover it for cholesterol or if you're diabetic, not weight loss.
-
When do you actually start to feel the 'fills'?
honk replied to CaraRose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
About 6 weeks out of surgery I got 4 CC, 3 weeks later I got an additional 2. I have some restriction but not perfect. -
Call you insurance to see if they require a referral. PPO's normally do not require a referral but HMO's do.
-
Mom on a journey it sounds like you are mentally saying "I'm free, I'm free. What can I eat!" I think you need to come up with a old school diet to hold you over until you get a fill. Did'nt you need to do that after your surgery but before your first fill? Get a food scale and weigh your protein and if neccesary measure out your veggies as well. I don't want to come across as a witch but if you eat with abandon you will gain weight. That's a fact.

anyone worried it won't work?
honk replied to wakeuprn's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Even though I had to wait 8.5 months for surgery I was still nervous the night before. I would compare it to getting on the rollercoster and the very slow assent to the top before you plunge down. You have all that time to ponder what the plunge will feel like. I was concerned I would not loose as quickly as other posters on this forum. To be truthful I do think I have been slower. However between my first consult and surgery I lost about 55 pounds. So I had lost all my water weight lonngggg before the surgery.
