What was the afternoon of your surgery like?
honk replied to dolphintattoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My night in the hospital I was in and out of the toilet ALL night. I would not have wanted company. Personally I would have their first sight of me be the next day, fully dressed and coherent. -

What time is your surgery? Personally I think unless they are teenagers, seeing you drugged up and in pain will be VERY traumatic. I did not enjoy sitting with my mother after her surgeries and I was 40! -
I prefer Chobani Greek yogurt. During mushies I used a hand blender to mince the fruit. Also splendra helps with the sourness. Make sure to get 0 or 2%, some brands are full fat!

3 oz weighed is different than 4 oz volume. A measuring cup is volume. If you read European recipes they are in grams (weighed) vs American ones which are by volume (cups).

20 pounds down... and nervous
honk replied to Pana'sNewStart's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You may gain some back when you move to mushies. It happens. It should be temp however as your body gets used to a new normal. -
My doctor says 3 oz weighed plus veggies. That is more than 1/2 a cup.

I don't think you need a fill. It sounds like you may actually be a little tight. The band will never stop you from eating unhealthy foods: crackers, candy, etc. I would ask yourself as you eat "am I hungry enough to keep eating". If not stop eating.
-
That can really depend on your doctor. My insurance didn't really require any waiting. Or pre op diet. My doctor however required that I lose 10 percent body weight before surgery. So if you haven't already done so I would call your insurance yourself and ask what the requirements are for surgery.

I would really focus more on General cardio exercise. While you can tone specific muscles; you can't spot reduce fat. Basically doing sit ups won't make you lose fat any faster in your stomach that it will anywhere else.

Love this idea for salad for lunch. The possibilities are endless!

Salad is a slider for me. With or without dressing. I know others have said the same. -

FYI 2 new bansters not to be a downer but salads are often a slider food. -
I tend to stay away from soup. I feel like I have to drink liquid first and then eat the solids. Also soup tends to have lots of carbs and very little protein. Another thing to consider is you may feel full immediately after eating but will you still feel satisfied 4 hours later. My doctor even before restriction doesn't want me having snacks.

Most doctors recommend 24 hours full liquids and then 24 hours mushies after a fill.

I would recommend speaking with your orthopedic doctor about Water exercise. I had a very bad knee problem when I weigh over 360 pounds and I could barely walk the grocery store to do my shopping. It was recommended to me that I try swimming since it wouldn't require weight bearing. I lost my first 80 pounds from swimming and diet. Now that I'm down to about 212 I can go walking and do other exercises in addition to water based. It was an enormous non scale victory for me this summer when I was doing 7 1/2 to 8 mile walks daily. If your health insurance covers mental health appointments; I highly recommend meeting with a psychologist that specializes in eating disorders. My surgeon required 3 group sessions with such a specialist. I started out thinking that they would be a major waste of time. After all I knew I was fat and I knew that I ate to much. I ended up really addressing my emotional ties to food. Another thing we covered was understanding when you're hungry and when you're just bored. We discussed the range of hunger from peckish to ravenously hungry. Especially once you've reached restriction you don't want to get to the point where you're so hungry that you try to inhale your food. You will have stuck episodes if you do. Something else we discussed was planning in advance to have Snacks on you so you never get to that irrational Hunger point. This can be a low fat cheese stick, premade Protein shake or low cal low fat Protein Bar. It's not hard to have these items on hand many of them can be left in your car for an emergency. It's just remembering to do it. Before the band most of us would just have gone to McDonald's and bought some french fries.

I don't think protein shakes are the way for you to go right now. Having to be on the protein shakes for 2 weeks pre op and then 2 weeks post op is hard enough I don't recommend adding additional liquid diet time to that. After all the protein shakes are magic it's really more of an easy way to control calorie intake. What I recommend doing is buying a food scale and start weighing at least your protein. Weigh out 3 ounces of protein and then the rest of your food should be low fat low carb low cal vegetables. Perhaps a small serving of fruit. Did you have to meet with a psychologist specializing in eating disorders? I found those appointments to be really helpful to me. It help me recognize and knowledge what my issues are with food. Not only am I an emotional eater but I really like crunchy salty foods. I no longer keep even low fat crackers or chips or rice cakes in my house because I will eat them uncontrollably. Also remember the band isn't magic either and it won't stop you ever from eating certain foods. Don't get me wrong I ate crap over Christmas way too much crap. It's important however to have the mindset that Christmas is only 1 day and if there's unhealthy food around you don't need to eat it the next day. Also I went to the gym the day before Christmas and the day after. My gym is closed on Christmas. There are those who will disagree with me I think bandsters need to add a non negotiable exercise schedule to their life. I expect for myself that I will go to the gym everyday and most weeks I do go 7 days. There are times that you are going to be burning calories and it's not necessarily at the gym today I spent an hour and a half doing snow removal. So long story short yes I would significantly modify your normal eating habits at this point but I don't think liquids are the way to go and I would recommend adding an exercise program. I found at my heaviest that swimming what's best for me because I have a lot of joint and back problems.

My question would be what does your doctor consider mushies. My first week of mushies was yogurt or cottage cheese. Oatmeal would not have been approved by my doctor nor eggs. Both of those would either be second week of mushies or solid. My recommendation would be to stick to less dense foods for now such as cottage cheese, ricotta or yogurt.

I second that premier shakes are very good. I'm guessing that what you really are looking for is no sugar added yogurt. Because yogurt is made out of milk and milk intrinsically have sugar.

Cold turkey day of surgery. Another reason is the cost. So expensive when you eat out!

I also have no issues with white meat. -
White meat vs Dark meat?
honk replied to Rebecca Cain Salpacka's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dark meat is intrinsically moist since it contains more fat. -
I find the less salty, crunchy, powdery my food choices the less I miss liquids when I eat.

Go to the emergency room you can't dehydrate. Also call the HEAD ADMINISTRATOR for the hospital where you had surgery. I would call it malpractice to withhold treatment.

Greek yogurt, low fat cottage cheese or ricotta, canned chicken or tuna.
