Liquids and mushies are sucky. I have two thoughts about your issue with solids. I wonder if you are having troubles because your progression to solids was to fast (Yes understand you are following your doctors orders). Three weeks out I was only being allowed shredding chicken. It was like week 5 before I got solids. Also you mentioned gettig stuck with mushies. I have only had stuck instances from raw carrots (those suckers are hard!). Did you doctor give you a fill at surgery? If so that could explain your problems with mushies and now solids. Once you've progressed to solids you need to be able to eat dense Proteins. As you mentioned liquids slide through but solids stay around to keep you full. It is bad for you to be too tight; so I would call the office to see if you've any fill you may need a small unfill.

Where do I get a restaurant card?
honk replied to rhya2k's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Got mine from the surgeon as well. I find that most of the childrens menues are not very interesting or even healthy. I wonder if you could try to use the card to buy off the Senior menu. I have also noticed that often the healthy options on menus are actually smaller portions. I think it's because those foods are more expensive than frozen fried food that they just heat up. I don't eat out as much as I used to but I divide my meal either mentally or physically into two portions and take half home. -
You can clearly feel the needle going in. It's funny because my port is pretty deep. Keep in mind I tend to have the same nurse. Sometimes she finds it in 1 second and is done; other times she is twirling the needle around (sorry) looking for it. I don't really find it that painful. I think it would be worse to get a numbing shot and then the fill needle.

I am a freaking starving maniac!
honk replied to eko's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Feeling your pain. The nurse at my doctors' office says that you can either feel a fill right away or that it can take up to 2 weeks for it to hit. 3CCs is'nt really that much. My doctor will let me have a fill 3 weeks after the last one. I would call them and see if you can schedule another fill. I think today was my 9 fill. Hoping this is restriction because I am at 10.6 CC's. -
I use mustard on chicken breast "wraps" made with lettuce leaves. Mayo is a no too high in fat and calories. I would disagree that you can't have olives. Greek Olives (black) are where you get Olive Oil from which is good for you. They are high in calories and fat so eat them in moderation. You can however slice them into thin pieces and put them on things.

Pre-Op Diet Serious Help Needed
honk replied to yannabee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you using Muscle Milk Light or Regular? Regular is very high in calories for the amount of protein you get. -
How many cc's do you get at each fill?
honk replied to deedee72's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They are all starting to run together but somthing like this: 4, 2, 1, 1, 1.4, .6. I had a different nurse for the two 1 fills; wonder if the other nurse had been there if she would have just given me one 2 CC fill. -
MSNBC article (sorry if this has already been posted)
honk replied to Juliat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know I read the article as someone who has been banded but it did seem pretty one sided to me. Also it did'nt really talk about how invasive the bypass is. They mentioned it could be done laproscopicly but did not say they were replumbing your digestive track! For some overweight people it is too dangerous a surgery. I know as someone who had a bloodclot that led to a stroke my doctor would'nt have done bypass. -
Mushy foods, getting stuck. HELP
honk replied to HungryMel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would call you doctor's office to see if they gave you any fill during surgery. Some doctors do. This could be causing your stuck episodes. How long were you on liquids? My doctor required clears for 7 days and full liquids for another 7. Then I could move to cottage cheese as a mushie but had to wait for another 7 days before I could do canned chicken. What kind of mushie did you get stuck with? -
Being a female, will my fills ever stop?
honk replied to donnalemaster's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have a 11 CC band. I am currently at 10CC's and have some restriction but not perfect. I am going in today for a fill. I think I only need a few ml. Yes, it's been a little frustrating. Some people get restriction at 5. I have been a slow loser and follow the diet requirments and exercise daily! Since my last fill I've noticed feeling full longer; but I don't get a full sensation while I'm eating. When I finish eating (measure out my food) I wait a few minutes and then get a full like sensation. -
What side is your port on ? Can you choose what side ?
honk replied to WickedJ's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Mine is about one inch up and 3 inches over from belly button on the left. If they are going to put it on a side I would def. ask for the one opposite of the one you sleep on. After you are healed it's not an issue but for the first month it will be. -
My doctor's office does not use Fluro either. Their fills are already $400 so I can only imagine how much they would be with the xray.

purpose of 48 hour liquids/mushies post fill
honk replied to cduval04's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My doctor does the liquids 24 hr, and mushies for 24. Two things your stomach is vey likely to be swollen after the fill and solid foods might cause irritation. Second thing getting stuck SUCKS! Have you ever had a stuck episode? Mine have come from baby carrots (not eaten right after a fill, I'm pretty fanatical about the post fill diet.) that just were'nt chewed enough. People react to fills differently. Some people get the fill drink the Water and think they are fine. That night the fill settles and suddenly they cant even swallow saliva. Imagine how bad it would be if you were eating solid food? Do I think you've damaged yourself? No. But I would follow the instructions in the future. Considering how doctors vary their orders on everything else the post fill diet seems to be pretty standard. -
Can you get hungrier after having a fill?
honk replied to Lunita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It could be that your body is fully recovering from surgery and 1) your regular appetite has returned 2) your body had been existing on liquids for WEEKS and is roaring back to life. Think of how when you're sick and don't eat for a couple days. When you start to feel better your body goes nuts and wants to eat everything.

Do you have a food scale? Even now after many fills I still weigh all my Protein. It is really easy to over estimate and yes I use a small lunch size plate. During this time it IS a diet. You will need to not only actively have smaller portions but also make good food choices. I don't even use the Benecol margarine anymore if I need something I use "butter spray". I've stopped buying nuts (yes I know they be healthy but not when you eat them by the hand full); crackers/cookies (even low fat ones), cheeses (except for low fat laughing cow). Take a good look at your pantry and decide whether a thin person would eat what's in there. If not give it away. FYI I did not get any rescriction until 9.4 CC's. So you COULD be many fills away from feeling anything. -

I also don't remember then addresing the malabsorption issues or dumping which are more of a quality of life issue. As someone who studied research methods in college I was also suprised at how small the sampling was. There's a great book "How to lie with statistics". Quick read with lots of pictures (Examples of Advertisements ) and very entertaining. Highly recommend it! -
Gold Standard Whey Isolate Double chocolate is very good ( I buy at Vitamin Shoppe). Premier Brand Ready to Drink from Costco is also very good (160 cal for 30 g. protein). I normally buy the chocolate but it does now come in Vanilla which I tried once there and it was fine. Run Searches on here and using google for recipes. Fat/sugar free pudding powder and Davinchi sugar free syrups add lot of flavor. Also I froze Milk Cubes and blended my shakes gave them a nice frosty texture.

You could ask your doctor if you could have protein shakes; but do not start them without doctors approval. Did they tell you how much you could have a day? One egg white only has like 15 cal. Could you spread out your "meals"; eat every couple hours? Are you having soup or plain broth? Again broth only has like 30 cal. could you drink more of it?

"but then there was a plateau where I slowly started to crave the foods that originally put it on...." I think this says it all. If you eat crappy food every day you will gain weight. Please remember your bypass won't stop you from eating junk either. If you eat that much junk food after one WLS something tells me you will find a way to eat it after a second WLS dumping and all.

Preop Diet, Not sure if this is right
honk replied to KatieRichardson's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you get a nurse on the phone if not the doctor? Mag Citrate is a laxative so it could be they are trying to get as much out of your digestive track as possible. I have read of people taking someting similar prior to surgery. I was loosing weight on my own so my doctor did not give me a presurgery diet other than to stop eating at midnight. -
Off topic But really need advice about relatioship!
honk replied to purple3797's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
First kids are'nt as dumb as we think. I think you mentioned you have boys. If so watching their father be verbally and possibly physically threatening is a horrible example. To be truthful I don't think you are even. You husband extracts his pound of flesh for your behavior (which I will say was very wrong) but then sends 3 (not 1 but 3) "flirty" texts. It is not okay to be abusive, EVER. The fact however that he wants to play the martyr and then wants to have his own flirtation is really uncalled for. Personally I think you should leave. I think your husband enjoys punishing you more than he is personally hurt by your behavior. Oh and I call a foul on him going away to a beach for a vacation leaving his wife and kids behind. Can you log into his cell phone account online through the provider (verizon, ATT) and see who he has been texting and or calling? I have a feeling there is more than meets the eye to this trip. -
Sister is hurt from my weight loss
honk replied to Loving everyday's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Loving everyday, while I realize you and your sister are really close it was not cool to ask her why she was'nt getting the band. While you did'nt mean it this way I can guarentee you she took it as condicending and/or presumptive. Please understand I am not trying to be mean. I once had a friend in college show me a meal she had just heated and asked if it looked good (clearly some premade thing). Not wanting to be rude I said sure it looks good. She then launched into this whole thing about Jenny Craig and how I could loose so much weight if I did Jenny Craig. Clearly she was trying to show me a way I could loose weight. But I was pretty insulted. I felt like she was kinda tricking me into saying how much I liked the food or something. Besides that I was putting myself through college and there would have been no way for me to both pay for college food (which I HAD to do) and buy JC. The decision to have WLS is such a personal decision. A person has to be dedicated to it or they will fail. Since so much of your success depends on your food choices. A person needs to want to choose the right food. External pressure will never be enough. Again understand I am just trying to have you see her side . -
I have to add that in regards to the surgery you want the best you can get. After the surgery is over however I think most people don't see their surgeon again. I know I have'nt seen him since 2 weeks after surgery. I only see the nurse practioners for fills, and they are not done with fluro either. In regards to nutrition my doctor and the nutrionist actually don't agree on some things which is a little frustrating. While he is a doctor I wonder if she actually spent more time studying nutrition then he did. For example my doctor likes the HMR 500 calorie diet. That's right 500 calories a day from 5 shakes made with Water. NOTHING else. And he puts people on this diet to prepare or surgery if they are larger (over 300 pounds); for MONTHS (one guy I knew for like 4 months). Neither the nurses or the Nuts. like this diet. Anyway. My point is find the best surgeon you can. However you must also like his staff because they are the ones you'll be working with closely for months. In my situation it was 8.5 months from consult to surgery; and I am still getting fills 6 months out.

With the ban, is it easier to it bad foods verses good.
honk replied to jboud's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
All the videos I saw on youtube sew a piece of stomach above the band to stomach below. Not sure if that is what you mean by folding. So I don't know if telling you doctor you don't want that is really going to work. If I were you I would look for another surgeon to figure out what has gone wrong. I would think you insurance could cover either replacement or removal. Two years is too long live like you are. I think you have a problem if you are'nt too tight but can still only eat soft sliders. -
FYI, when I inquired about FMLA at one employer they did say I had to use up all the time I had comming before I could use that. So one would probably need to use all vacation and sick time before using FMLA. In MA if you are out for more than 5 days if your company offers short term disability you would then go on that the 6th day. Which would actually be better because FMLA is UNPAID. I know this does not apply to the original poster but others reading this thread should research their rights for their particular state both online and with their benefits department.
