Remember in the beginning a lot of the weight you're losing is water weight not fat weight. So once you're actually trying to burn fat It's going to be a slower loss. You have to either burn 3500 calories through exercise or cut out 3500 calories from your food consumption in order to lose 1 pound of fat. Also if you're exercising then you could be gaining muscle which is technically going to be weight.

First Post Not yet banded
honk replied to Creekwood's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some people have trouble drinking a lot of fluids immediately following surgery but once you're healed there shouldn't be any issues. I drink right up to meal time and then wait an hour after before I have anything else to drink. I have no trouble drinking a lot of water while I work out either. -
Slight discomfort when eating one week after fill...
honk replied to sherrypep's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
How recently was your fill? It would be more than a week ago I would speak to the doctor. Being to be too tight can lead to a slip. -
Survived First Fill Today.... Liquids for the next 3 days??
honk replied to NJMommy2Four's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I would stay away from frozen meals they're way too high in salt and their protein levels are not very good considering the carbs they contain. I second that you should buy a food scale you can find 1 pretty cheaply at Walmart or Kmart. In General eating foods that are high in fat and calories are also bad for your family. If you make a low fat protein and vegetables for your family you can eat the same food. -
Anyone else feel like a Lap Band failure?
honk replied to twinskins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Carbonation can be a problem for someone with the Lap Band. Please stop immediately. I like Diet Coke but I gave it up cold turkey the day of surgery. Until you get restrictions this is the willpower diet. It wasn't until I had 10.6 cc that I have restriction, which took me 6 months to achieve. For now I would buy a food scale and weigh out all your solid Protein to 3 ounces. And then eat low fat low carb low calorie vegetables until satisfied. And it's hard to describe but satisfied is really different than full. Did your doctor require you to meet with a eating disorder therapist? I wish all doctors required such appointments. Because the band will never ever outsmart your brain. It won't and can't stop you from eating anything that dissolve in your mouth such as candy, cake, crackers etc. -
OK Ladies...Let's talk Boob's...

52 DD before surgery, 40 DD 2 and a half years out. -
I was never told I couldn't eat any particular food. Foods such is bread rice potatoes are higher in carbs and can affect your weight loss. I've cut out bread rice potatoes but that was really personal decision.

Survived First Fill Today.... Liquids for the next 3 days??

Premier brand ready to drink is very good 160 calories for 30 grams of protein. As mentioned above the options you listed tend to be higher in calories for the amount of protein. You can find premier at Sam's Club and Costco. Muscle Milk Light ready to drink is okay but make sure to get the Lite version versus the regular as it has a lot less calories. Carnation Instant Breakfast comes in a sugar free version so if you're going to go that route make sure to get sugar free. You can make your own shakes from protein powder and milk. I make them in a blender an add ice cubes to get a nice icy texture. -
I had surgery late on Thursday so I had Friday the weekend then 5 business days and another weekend. So a total of 10 days.

new to site - thank you! (considering surgery + wanting to be pregnant sooner than later)
honk replied to aviva1979's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
Most doctors want you to agree to be on birth control for 12 months after surgery. As someone who had a lot of me problems the surgery has been fabulous. There was a time when I could barely walk to the grocery store to do my shopping. This summer I was up to doing 7 to 7 a half miles of walk everyday. I'm viewing for my phone so I can't see your profile. I would say if you're under 35 you should have the surgery wait a year before trying to conceive. -
Please keep in mind I was doing an hour of cardio 7 days a week before surgery. I was back to the gym on the treadmill 0 incline on day 4. I did about 45 minutes. I think on day 11 I went back to the elliptical not terribly strenuous. Day 15 I started lap swimming, keep in mind I was swimming daily before surgery.

Once healed my doctor does not want me using Protein shakes as meal replacement. The band is meant to work with solid food. A liquid does not keep you full, it washes right through the pouch into the big stomach. Because I have a long time between lunch and supper I do have a premade Protein shake on the way to the gym. It's premier brand that I buy at costco 160 calories for 30 grams of protein. Because the band tends to be tighter in the morning some people have a protein shake for breakfast. Because I have to leave really early in the morning I have a cup of hot coffee during my commute and then have a Greek yogurt for breakfast once I get to work. I have a fruited Chobani Greek yogurt mixed with half a scoop of Protein powder and unflavored Fiber powder, I add a couple walnuts and about a quarter cup of Kashi go lean high protein Cereal. The key to this is bringing the powder ingredients in 1 small container and the nuts and cereal in another.

It can take up to 2 weeks for a fill to take affect. Being as this is your first fill it probably isn't going to do much for you. In general my doctor says you need to wait 3 weeks between fills. While I understand it's hard to hear this right now but it is always better to be loose then to be to tight.

3-6 month out eating questiom?
honk replied to SWChitown's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hopefully your doctor will have a pre op session on what you're supposed to eat both the days prior to surgery and then the month after. And give you a hand out to take home so you can look back at it. My doctor required clears plus protein shakes made with just milk for 7 days. Yes I know most protein shakes are not clear. The next 7 days were smooth soups such as tomato or squash plus protein shakes made with just milk. Week 1 of mushies was smooth yogurt, cottage cheese and ricotta cheese. I could also still have smooth soup. Week 2 of mushies was soft protein like canned chicken or tuna which I mixed with low fat laughing cow cheese. I was then allowed to move to solids. In general my doctor frowns on processed carbs like pasta or bread. And I don't really like rice. By 3 months out I was eating regular solids. Personally I try to stay relatively low carb and low fat. I've never been a drinker so that's really not an issue for me. I live alone so there's no 1 else here to eat junk food so no reason for me to buy it. I try to live by the 90/10 rule. Eat really healthy 90 percent of the time and the other 10 have some treats. For me it means not keeping fatty foods in my house. But if I go to a family birthday party once every 3 months I work a small piece of birthday cake into my daily calorie count. And since crackers are a trigger food for me I don't keep them in my house but I can have 1-2 at a party. -
Most doctors say a lap band patient will lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. And you are losing around 2 pounds a week. Considering you're relatively low start weight I think you're losing at a pretty quick pace. As mentioned above someone who is 300 pounds the day of surgery is going to probably lose more weight up front then someone who is 230 pounds. While I was 280 pounds the day of. surgery I had already lost 100 pounds from diet and exercise. So even though I believe I was a very very good banister I have been a slow loser

Does your doctor required sessions with a eating disorder therapist? If not I recommend that you get a referral and visit 1. My doctor does require these appointments and I thought they were going to be a total waste of time. Turns out they were 1 of the most important parts of my pre op journey. It is so important to understand what are your triggers for overeating. That can be types of food or social situations or stressors. They can help you with coping strategies. I don't regret having surgery and I personally had a very easy recovery.

I was referring to eating a lot of cheese not about veggie burgers.

I do think that there are some members who are quick losers who look down their noses at those of us who are slow losers. As mentioned above by another poster I also follow the band rules and exercise 7 days a week. I don't drink I don't buy candy. But in general I'm a slow loser and am currently at a plateau. I finally made an appointment with an oncologist to discuss possible thyroid problems as recommended by my weight loss doctor. Some people on this site do project an attitude that if you aren't losing at the rate they're losing then you clearly are a cheater and lazy. I did a lot of research before my surgery and I don't think the band is failing me. In fact I think I have a genetic problem. I just think some people on this site should consider the tone of their posts.

As much as it makes me feel like an old lady I have to say 18 hour by Playtex. The reason why makes me feel old is because that's the brand my mother has worn for so long as I can remember. But the reality is it's a great brand especially if you're a D or DD. Buy 1 in the store where you can try it on and get the size on the largest hook. That way you can tighten it up as you lose weight. You can buy Playtex 18 hour from their website at a significant savings from the store price.

I've read a lot of posts on this site that make it sound like those who have fruited yogurt are eating a hot fudge sundae. That the carbs they're getting from fruit are the biggest sin in the world. Drives me crazy because most of us did not get obese from eating fruited yogurt.

Have any of these people actually had the surgery? Or is it all urban legend I heard it from someone's father's sister's brother? I've never regretted having surgery and I'm 2 and a half years out. For some of us this is the life line. No 1 else has to live in your body so no 1 else gets a vote!

How soon after surgery can you go swimming?
honk replied to Flowering man's topic in Fitness & Exercise
