How much did you have to lose before they would band you?
honk replied to rae.holmes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mark, I highly recommend a water proof MP3 player. Makes lap swimming go by so much faster! I swim 7 days a week so when you brake it down to cost per use it's not to bad. -
You could try a protein shake for breakfast and dinner and a low cal/fat/carb protein based lunch.

I got the idea the poster has roommates and they are'nt very quiet. While I did'nt really need someone to take care of me post surgery if you would feel better being with your family go home. I had no gas pain post op and was only using liquid tylenol for pain (port incision is the most painful). I would be sure to stop hourly and walk around (post surgery you need to be careful of blood clots.). Also put a small pillow (like from the couch) between you and the seat belt.

I was already lap swimming before surgery so my doctor said I could resume at two weeks. Four days after surgery I was back at the gym doing 30+ minutes slow on the treadmill. Worked up my time and incline until I could go back to swimming. Swimming is great for overweight people. Also water aerobics can be done at many levels of intensity. You can ask the instructor how you can make moves harder.

Premier Ready to Drink protein shake is very good. It is sold online and at Costco. Both Chocolate and Vanilla flavors. Personally I don't like the protein juices. Got half of one down presurgery and had my two college age nephews try it. Both said it was foul.

I find the Macy's set up annoying. If you are at the 1X/XL size you have to carry stuff from one floor to another to try them on together to see which fits better. I'm glad to hear others find the sizing at Targets to be on the small side. I also think their close are not very good quality. JC Penny also puts the maternity clothes next to Plus Size.

The Band/Pregnancy

You are way to tight if you can only eat one meal a day. You would clearly need to get some fluid taking out. A baby would not get enough nutrition on what you are eating. -
Let's Talk Exercise!
honk replied to livingmydream's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was already doing 1 hour of moderate + cardio seven days a week prior to surgery (and had been for a year and a half.). I make very conservative food choices. I am just a slow loser. Working full time and commuting a total of 2 hours a day I just don't have time to add more work outs. -
How much did you have to lose before they would band you?

I had to loose 10% body weight so 34 pounds. It would'nt shock me if the surgeon gave you a certain amount to loose before surgery. -
I highly recommend getting a water proof mp3 player makes an hour of swimming go by so much faster.

Have you considered a protein with less fat/calories. Red meat is high in both. You may be able to cut your cal from protein in half by switching to chicken/fish.

I fessed up to my bad behavior!
honk replied to hopetolose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry that she reemed you out. You need to remember that she had probably heard some really outrageous stories and is more of a tough love kind of person. I've read stories on this board where people are eating a whole big mac or a nuggets and fries two days after surgery. If you did'nt say what you ate she is probably thinking the worst. -
Yes, harder than it looks. As you progress you can also ask the instructor ways to make the moves harder. Does your pool have lighter and heavier weights for the pool? If so after a while you can move to the heavier ones.

a few questions before surgery
honk replied to JessVotedBest's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery would have been 3month from the time of consult if I had'nt had another health issue. My doctor did how ever require me to loose 34 pounds which I did. If it took one longer than 3 months to loose the weight that would have affected the surgery date. -
my niece overheard me talking about my upcoming Lap Band surgery today.
honk replied to Tabby Ann's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I kept my decision relatively quiet but did tell my immediate family. I did want to explain things to my neice that I did not make this decision easily and that I've had a weight problem my entire life. She has seen both my sister and I yo yo though I have always weight more than my sister. My neice is 14 and she is at a very delicate age when it comes to body image (though she takes after her father's side and is tall and thin). -
My doctor never gave me instructions about how long to wait to eat after having a glass of water. I drink right up to point that I start eating and don't have any issues. I do wait an hour after eating before drinking water.

Once you get in the habit it really does become a habit. You'll want to work out. For now I would make it a non negociable part of your day. I used to make dinner contingent on working out. No exercise no eating. Now that's motivation. Believe me!

Not to be a nag but are you supposed to be on solids? I was still on clear liquids 7 days out.

PostOP Pain/management/medication
honk replied to crash878905's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Pain was much less than I expected. I was lucky not to have gas pains. I am allergic to Narcotics so I just took liquid tylenol. -
I agree it is important to remember this is about having a new mindset. If your doctor does'nt have individual or group sessions with a psychologist on mindful eating; find one. It is important to explore WHY you eat. Because most of the time it's not about you being hungry. There has been recent research that shows people who have a all or nothing approach to dieting are more likely to give up or in general loose less weight. After getting through surgery I wanted to live my life the way thin people do. While admittedly I eat less fat/calories, snacks than my thin sisters. I wanted to be able to have a small piece of cake at a family birthday party and not have it be a fall down a rabbit hole to eating junk for the next week. So I may not be answering your question but I think it's important to develope a new relationship with food that allows you to be in control. I feel the band helps me do that because I eat a lot less then I used to; and by the time dessert comes I'm not ravenous for a large serving. More directly to your question. Some people come on this board and complain the band does'nt stop them from eating ice cream, candy, etc. Well, it won't, EVER. Having a new mind set when it comes to food however will help you choose not to eat high fat/cal foods and eat less of them.

No Restriction at ALL! Is this right? 4 wks out.
honk replied to mynuday's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Took me six months to get restriction. I'm not telling you this to depress you but to help make realistic expectations. My suggestion is to buy a good digital scale and make sure to weigh your protein. Before restriction I would eat my 3 oz of protein and then eat a serving of veggies and be done. -
I'm a slow loser. I work out an hour seven days a week; and am loosing on average 1 lb week. You may just be one of those people who lose slower than others.
-
Well I was a little concerned moving to solids; but since I did'nt get restriction for 6 months it was'nt really an issue.
-
Check out water proof mp3 players on Amazon. I find having music to be a must. I do an hour of lap swimming daily and it makes time go by so much faster.

I know it's hard but I think you need to hold off eating out for now. At two weeks I was just moving to cottage cheese.
