  1. I was banded this past Monday. My birthday is the 26th of this month so this was a combo Christmas/Birthday gift to myself. Now all I can think about is how great I'm going to feel this summer. This is the most exciting thing that I have ever done for myself.
  2. Thanks for the words of encouragement.
  3. I was banded this past Monday, December 6th in Beverly Hills. Turns out I had a hiatal hernia that needed to be repaired, but two days later I am back at work and was able to walk 5 miles on my treamill this morning. I have 65 pounds to lose and I am surprised how quickly I was able to bounce back. I hope everyone has it as easy as this has been. A little heart burn at night is my only complaint.
  4. I was banded on Monday. I slept most of that day but towards the end of the evening I had the sore shoulder which I guess is a phantom pain caused by pressure on the phrenic nerve. It's totally gone today. Yesterday (two days post op) I was able to walk 5 miles on a treadmill which helped relieve a lot of the gas pain. I have struggled with heartburn for the last two nights but I was told I am allowed to take protonix to stop this. I'm back at work today with only mild soreness at the incision sites. Good luck. The pain does subside, but you have to get up and move around.
  5. I was banded this Monday the 6th and last night started having horrible heart burn. It was while I was sleeping and I hadn't had any shakes for hours so I'm not sure what is causing it. I don't seem to have the shoulder pain this morning which is wonderful, but the heartburn has taken it's place for irritation of the day. Anyone know if we are allowed to take protonix or other pills for GERD. I also had I hiatal hernia repair when the band was put in place.
  6. I'm scheduled for tomorrow too! Good luck!
  7. I went in for a consultation last Tuesday, November 30th and I'm scheduled for surgery tomorrow December 5th. Phew....it has been a crazy week trying to get all the evaluations and tests run. At least I didn't have a lot of time to rethink my decision.
  8. From the album: All the Befores that I Haven't Destroyed

I want to get back to this size again. I included the photo amongst a sea of overweight photos to remind myself that it's possible.
  9. I'm going to be banded tomorrow at Noon! I'm nervous and excited at the same time. I'm starting off at a lower BMI of 32 and my goal is to lose 60 pounds. I was going to wait until after the New Year to have it done, but when I went in for my consult last Tuesday, the doctor surprised me by saying he could do it the following Monday. So last week was a whirlwind of tests and evaluations. My birthday is the 26th of December so I'm looking at this as a birthday present and a rebirth of sorts.
  10. Hi all. My name is Shawnee and I'm what is considered a low BMI candidate for the surgery. I'm 5'4" and 185 pounds. My doctor has agreed to do it and is actually submitting a study on Low BMI banding this month. Because my BMI is 32 my insurance company would not cover the surgery so I'm paying outta pocket and it's not cheap. I know that I probably wont see the dramatic and immediate results that some heavier people experience, but I want to make sure I optimize my loss and do it right. I'm hoping others can give me advice, tips, pitfalls that I should avoid, etc. I'm having the surgery this monday December 6th and noon in Beverly Hills. I'm excited and nervous at the same time

I'll still be on the threads. Just trying different things. The worst part is that I had to gain 15 pounds to qualify for the surgery in mexico even. So I gained the weight and now im not having the surgery, just stuck with the weight. Sucks!

I had to cancel. I talked to a nurse that scared me out of going to mexico. So now I need to save another $7,500.00 and go from there.
  13. I am 5'3 and I way 180 pounds. That puts my BMI at 31. Low for such drastic measures as surgery (or at least that what my mom has told me) but that's not the point. The point is that this is just the beginning. I was involved in a really bad car accident in 1989. I broke my legs, pelvis and shattered my hip socket. I was in traction for 3 months and when I left the hospital I weighed 115 pounds. Life quickly resumed to a normal pace and shockingly I had very little negative effects from the accident. As the years flew bye I very slowly gained little bits of poundage. When I decided to get married in 1991 I had to go on a diet to get from 130 pounds back down to 120 pounds. I did it and after 6 months of marriage I was up to 140 pounds. I gained and lost the same 10 pounds maintaining my weight at between 140 and 150 until I became pregnant with my daughter in 1998. I gained 30 pounds with her and blossomed to a lovely 170 pounds. I was able to lose 10 pounds pretty quickly with calorie restriction and exercise but then it stopped. Soon I was stuck at 165 pounds. So I discovered Lindora Weight Loss Center. With there help I was able to lose 30 pounds in 4 months. I restricted my calories to 800 per day, I did yoga three days per week, I joined a bootcamp that I attended every morning for 6 weeks at a time. But I looked good at 140 when I spent a few weeks on the beaches of Barcelona. That was in 2003. Between July 2003 and February of 2004 I gained back all of the weight plus and additional 10 pounds. Now I had hit my all time high of 180 pounds. Since that time I have done the so many diets and none of them worked. Cabbage Soup diet - lost 7 pounds gained it all back Lindora (4 X & $3,000 later) - lost 20 lbs gained it all back Nutrisytem - the food was to bad to even give it a chance Medifast - couldn't do liquids only for more than 2 weeks Jenny Craig - 1 pound per week gained it all back Weight watchers - slow weight loss and gained it all back. Cookie Diet - lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks. Gained it all back. So I've tried it all and now after failure upon failure my hips have decided to fail me. I'm young. I shouldn't have to be considering hip replacement at this age, so instead I found a doctor in Mexico who would preform the surgery and I can't wait. I'm scheduled for December 9th! This is a preventative measure. Think of the money the insurance company would have to have paid for my new hip and yet I am traveling to Mexico because my insurance company denied me.
  14. Thanks for the encouraging words. I did appeal to the insurance company and they explained that they do not cover any bariatric procedures under any circumstances. They told me I could wait until January and then during open enrollment I could switch to Kaiser, but there is not guarantee that Kaiser would approve me and that's a long time to wait and find out you've been denied once again.

    Success rate with "low" BMI

I'm a little nervous about the low bmi thing. I am 5'4" and weight 185 pounds. I am actually trying to gain a little weight right now so that i don't get turned away on my surgery date which is in early December. Does anyone know why weight loss would be slower with low bmi patients?

I'm scheduled for December 9th with Dr. Kuri in Mexico. My insurance wont cover it and because I have a lower BMI the surgeons I talked to didn't want to do the surgery at all. I'm excited but really nervous.
