  1. Hello, I had surgery in October of 2009. I have had numerous fills and am pretty restricted now. A few months ago I developed severe acid reflux that was noticed at all times of the day. I spoke to my surgeon and he put me on Carafate and Protonix. Recently, I have been experiencing severe reflux in my sleep. It's not acidic so the Protonix seems to be working, however, it awakens me in the middle of a dead sleep causing me to cough and gag. Without being too descriptive, it sometimes comes out of my nose and/or mouth. I have spoken to my surgeon and he advised me not to eat or drink anything after 6PM. I have tried this with no avail. I'm terrified of aspirating in my sleep. Has anyone else ever experienced this and if so, what actions did you take? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!
  2. I am 2.5 months post-op and seem to have fallen back into the same eating routines I had preop. I have had 2 fills so far with plenty of restriction. I would throw up multiple times at every meal for the first few weeks. However, I learned that ice cream would go down and STAY down without any difficulty. :blushing:( I have gotten into the horrible habit of eating one, maybe even two, pints of ice cream EVERYDAY!! I refuse to get on the scale anymore because I am so ashamed in myself. I made a vow to myself that I'm starting anew today so I am taking my vitamins and calcium supplements again. My plan is to drink protein shakes and drink plenty of water until I get it into my head that I'M NOT HUNGRY!! Have any of you fallen off the wagon and if so, how did you get back on?! Any comments are appreciated and welcomed!!

Need some advise and a pep talk!!

I feel exactly the way you do right now. I'm only 4 weeks post op and have lost 15 lbs. I know losing the weight slower is healthier but I can't help but feel like I should have lost more. People tell me that they can see a difference in my face but I can't see ANY change whatsoever. It's very discouraging since I have completely changed what and how I eat AND have been working out at the gym regularly. I hope you get some good replies to your post because I feel like I'm in the same boat you're in.
  4. An EGD is short for an esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Basically, they put a camera down your throat and look around. You're not completely put to sleep because you have to follow a few simple commands during the procedure. However, after a little versed you won't care what they're about to do to you!! Good luck!!

    Head hunger vs real hunger?

In our nutrition classes, we discussed the differences between real hunger and head hunger. She emphasized that we need to listen to our bodies cues to determine the difference. With real hunger, you may experience stomach growling, hand tremors, headaches, etc. Head hunger is more of cravings for foods, eating when you're not hungry, eating when you THINK you're SUPPOSED to be eating, and mindless snacking. I'm having a really hard time differentiating the two. My "fat chick" brain keeps telling my "skinny chick" stomach that I'm hungry when I'm really not. It's the hardest part for me since my surgery. Hope this helps.
  6. Congrats on your approval. I got approval on 10/12 and had surgery on 10/13, although, my surgery was scheduled a month in advance. It all depends on your labwork and your surgeons schedule. My best guess would be 2-4 weeks. Good luck!!
  7. Hello everyone, I just joined today and have had so much fun reading all of the posts on this site. It is so informative and so encouraging reading the words of fellow bandsters. I am 4 weeks post op and have lost 15lbs so far. My mind says I should be losing weight faster but the nurse in me knows that 15lbs a month is almost too much. I have found that the hardest part is getting my "fat chick" mind to get in sync with my "skinny chick" stomach. I wonder how much longer that will last. Anyhoo, just wanted to say hello and I look forward to chatting with you all. WR

    Hello everyone. Newbie from TX!!

Hi Tessie, Congrats on your approval!! What an exciting time for you. As for the pre-op diet, my surgeon had me do full liquids for 2 weeks before surgery. The first two days were definitely the hardest. I found that drinking high protein drinks kept me full much longer than clear liquids and puddings. For me, the higher the protein the less hungry I was. The worst part for me was the hunger headache. I believe that lasted about 3 days and nothing would relieve it. Looking back, I should have had more water throughout the day but I was still getting an adequate amount of fluids. Good luck to you and I look forward to reading about your success!!
