I would be both appalled and saddened should abortion receive a nation-wide ban in the United States even though this would certainly improve tourism in Canada. Unfortunately this also means that only those women who live near to the border/can afford it will be able to come to Canada in order to obtain a safe and legal abortion. Those women who are financially disadvantaged will find themselves thrust back into olden times when abortions were illegal and often unsafe. Now, please do believe me when I say that I have great respect and affection for you, Gadget, and for you, L8BloomR, but I do feel frightened by the present American political climate. It seems to me that this current drift to the right is characterised by Biblical strictures and a theory of morality based on an interpretation of this material; it is a right wing stance which is based on Christian theology and thus very different from the questions of economy management which had traditionally been the historical issues dividing the Republicans from the Democrats. As you know, there is a significant number of people in your country who do not believe that a foetus which cannot survive outside of the womb is in fact a person. We believe that it is a promise of a person and we also believe that when push comes to shove the rights of individual who is already here trump that of the foetus. It is up to the woman to claim rights over her own body. If she does not have this freedom then she may as well wear a bluddy burqa and have a clitorectomy. Plurality in an advanced democracy means that minorities are both heard and accomodated. If 54% of Americans are currently against abortion this means that these individuals do not have to engage in an abortion. These pregnant women can refuse to have 'em and medical personnel can refuse to aid and abet. Should the moral majority succeed in squashing abortion, and do remember that you currently have a president who has eroded your civil liberties and invaded an oil-rich country claiming that he has Jesus's okay, you will be drifting dangerously into theocracy land. From my limited understanding of what your founding fathers were up to, this was not their plan. You might want to consider that ChristianLand might not be all that different from MuslimLand. It is a slippery slope. Please do avoid it. (The rest of the free world does need you, ya know.) -
I do have a good friend who is a very kind, creative and intelligent - he has 3 university degrees - man but he is also handicapped by schizophrenia. Along with this undeniable handicap he used to be entirely feckless with money and between the two of us we drifted into the habit where I would give him monthly loans which I always forgave out of my personal sense of guilt. While I was doing this for him he was spending his (my) money wining and dining straight young men, he is gay, and skiving off his part-time job. (He also receives a pension.) Of course he knew that I would make up the difference. I finally realised that I was his enabler and that this was making me very angry for I was working hard for my money. This is when I told him that the money train had pulled out of the station. And once his cash sources began to dry up he really did get his act together. Enough so that my mate and I do enjoy offering to help him out by paying for such things as his dial-up internet access, vet bills, etc.

Maybe someone ought to start a poll as to what form of exercise each of us prefers: walking or running or bicycling? :ranger: (There are some cycling fans on LBT.) I am a walker. Fat or thin, I love walking. I always have. :biggrin1:

It is true that I have a lot of old food in containers in the fridge which I really don't want to deal with because of the ick factor. This played a central role in my garbage dream. You see, containers go in one recycle box and uneaten food goes in the "wet" recycle bin. Ugh! Fuzzy green yogurt and raita, etc.... Oh, pukies! -

I find this comment very interesting, Nina. You see, I have known a number of people who have grown up with a handicapped sibling and without exception every one of these individuals has been bitter about the loss/transfer of parental attention and other family resources. -

I never get interesting sex dreams anymore. I think it is because I am on too many antidepressants and as you probably know they do kind of ruin the libido. Sad times for my mate. :phanvan Last night I dreamt about putting out the garbage, a complex business at best in my city because we have an elaborate recycling system, but in this case it was like cleaning out my own private garbage dump. A boring but unpleasant dream. :tired And today is garbage day. :straight -
That's fantastic, Argon. Refunds are always nice. Now that I am retired I don't see them anymore. *sob* But on the other hand I get to do what I do best: be an ageing slacker.

Very sensible of Arizona. :clap2: But, seriously, the amount of sunlight we do or don't have available varies widely from summer to winter the closer to the poles we live. In the summertime the hours of light can be very, very long and the opposite is true in the winter. In Canada and the northern States we really do suffer from a terrible loss of daylight in the winter months. (This is why we are now told to take extra vita D.) This is the argument that is trotted out for moving the time back and forward by an hour each spring and fall. I still think it sucks, though.

Hey, excellent idea! :clap2:

Wasa, it sounds like your sister has serious problems and lending her money is only enabling her. A woman who can make a million bucks vanish up her nose cannot be helped by your love and generosity.

Yah, one of our 3 prairie provinces (either Saskchewan or Manitoba) refuses to do it, too. I am always so envious. *whine*

I guess this means that you can't respond by asking them if they've managed to get rid of their crabs yet......... So ask them about their head lice problem. :heh:

No, we have it in Canada and the U.S. I personally hate it. It takes me weeks to adjust to summer time. This is because I am not a morning person. :tired I wish we would stick to one time all the time.

Tell 'em you've got a gambling problem...... teehee I have had similar problems to yours, Chelle. My mother died a couple of years ago and left me quite a lot of money. A number of my friends have found themselves up against it for various reasons and my husband and I have lent them money since we are now the rich ones in our gang. So far we haven't seen any money come back to us although one individual does mention that she is going to pay us back. As for the other two, no mention of the money! As for why we have loaned money to these people, well, it is because we like them, we are in a good financial place, my husband is a kind and generous man, I used to be poor when I was young, and now I feel a little bit guilty about having a lot of cash when some of our friends have so little. It can be difficult to say no.

Great post, Kat817. I always do enjoy listening to what you have to say. I am very sorry to hear that you will be stuck in another brawl with that cancer beast. I trust that you will defeat it quickly. Keep us in the loop, will you? :boink:

This has happened a lot with the old houses in the core of my city. There are a lot of Victorian and Edwardian houses which became very cheap as they fell out of fashion during the 40s and the 50s. Immigrants bought them and then began grafting their own and very alien aesthetic on them. The Greeks, Italians, and Portuguese who tended to work in construction were especially fond of doing this. The result is houses which have been uglified beyond belief but the workmanship is magnificient. The real estate people refer to these houses as "nationalised." The houses which survived were the ones which were turned into rooming houses during this era and simply allowed to run down. Now folks want to live downtown in these period houses and they are being fixed up by Yuppies. I am lucky in that I live in a house which was mostly fixed up by a Yuppy couple. Unfortunately their marriage crashed before they got to the kitchen. This remains the most dysfunctional kitchen in the universe because I have been too lazy and too neurotic to deal with reno and workmen. About a third to a half of the houses on my street have been nationalised.
