  1. Yes, a fistula is a "hole" or "opening" or "communication" between to areas. So a gastric fistula is unfortunately a hole in your stomach. That is why the band has to come out, to allow the area to heal, and the hole to close up.

    Roof of mouth pain

If it does not get better let your doc know.....don't ignore it......could be something like an abscess that is totally unrelated to surgery.

    What causes.......

losing weight decreases the fat around organs.

    I'm somewhat concerned.

The pre-op program I am in recommends a small protein-based snack in between meals if you are hungry untill you have adequate restriction.....I won't be banded until 3/31 so i don't know if this works....but I guess I'll be finding out! But I agree with the last post, if it weren't for these message boards and the blogs I follow I wouldn't have known to anticipate the "banster-hell" phase. Knowing to expect it has helped me prepare for it mentaly.
  5. Hi! I've been following your posts on here for several months now....you give people great advice in a very care, non-judgemental way....i'm sure you have helped a lot of people (myself included!) Congratulations on your big day...and was so glad to hear you did well....you are an inspiration.

    April Bandster Bunnies

looks like I'll be joining you all in April as well. "what a long ...strange trip it's been" and it's only just begun!
  8. Yep.....I was just in my Bariatric Nurses's office this week crying my eyes out. But she told me if I wasn't sitting there crying and asking myself the hard questions then she'd be worried about me. Two days later I got my insurance approval! I think it's all part of the process.
  9. Hi Chris! I saw your post about telling your parents about your decision.....it made me smile (I'm a home care nurse and take care of many people your parents' ages) i unfortunately don't have my parents any longer....it's so great that they are supporting you! I am also at the same spot as you are...all my stuff is in and my file will be going for insurance approval in the next day or two! Keep our fingers crossed!

    This has me scared....

Any one can vomit and aspirate and die....even without ever having any surgery.
  11. I agree with previous post.....you need to contact the nutritionist and get the information you need. You can't possibly be getting enough protein from mashed potatoes and jello. I received detailed instructions to follow in my pre-op classes that included what to eat, how much, how often, and how many grams of protein, fat and calories per day. If you didn't get this information pre-op then call nutritionist or surgeon's office. Good luck!
  12. Hi! I'm Cindy from NJ...was browsing the pics and saw yours....you look great! I should be having my surgery in March...your pics gave me inspiration

  13. Try not to let yourself get discouraged. You are a very young woman and probably have not had a lot of experience with dealing with our health care system. I have been a nurse for 25 years and have still had problems (ie getting a letter from my primary MD for my insurance approval) My suggestion is to be as organized as possible, use a note book, (or your favorite electronic device) and keep track of all your appointments, tests, contact info, etc. Don't take anything for granted...confirm appointments, double check locations, follow-up to make sure tests results get to who they need to get to. If it sounds like a pain in the butt and a lot of work.....IT IS!!! Just keep in mind that anything worth while is worth the effort......that YOU are worth the effort! Good luck with your journey.

    $600 Program Fee? Ouch!

Well, my program fee was $1400, which covered the psych eval, 5 nutrition classes, one pre-op class, one pre-op weight-loss nutrition class, monthy appointments with the bariatric nurse, and unlimited support-group meetings before and after surgery. This fulfilled all of the insurance requirements for pre-approval. The way I look at it is, the more educated I am and the more support I have, the more sucessful I will be.

How many of you do this?

I would say that that question to ask yourself would be "What resourses do I have in place in the event of complications? Could I afford to pay out of pocket for treatment if needed?"
  16. Hi Sue! I'm Cindy from NJ. I just read your story and it really inspired me. I'm just about through my 3 month pre-op program, and about 2 weeks from my file being sent for insurance approval....was starting to get nervous. Your words reinforced why I'm doing this. Thank you!

    Need some encouragement...

These are very important issues to consider when paying out of pocket or having surgery in another country.Good long term follow up care could be the difference between sucess and disaster
