After first being denied at the age of 18, I decided to start the process of getting approval for the lap band once I graduated from college, got a job, and had my own insurance policy.  Things have gone relatively smooth and after a month of attending an educational seminar, a dietary consultation, surgical consultation, having blood work done and participating in a psychological assessment; I was officially approved for surgery on October 19, 2009.  I have done tons of research and my mom has even undergone the gastric bypass procedure.  While she was successful initially, I saw her succomb to her temptations and has regained all the weight that she had lost.  I think that seeing this failure has motivated me to do this right and for this to be a welcomed life time change and journey for me as i continue into adulthood. My surgery date is December 28, and while the date seems so far away, I will be able to enjoy the holidays how I feel I should be able to and to complete the fall semester of grad school, so that i will have time to adjust to my new way of living before starting school again in the spring.
