  1. You may want to ask: What size band you will have (many people don't know, including myself) How your Dr does fills (or if he/she even does them his/herself) (with numbing/without...etc.) And what kind of medications you will be on long-term (I was suprised that I have to take a gal-stone preventative, nexium, and Multivitamin w/ Iron for the next few years at least)

    Alcoholic beverages?

I haven't had any problems with alcohol. If I go to the clubs, I usually order something like a malibu rum w/ pineapple juice, an orange juice and vodka, or wine because carbonated beverages (beer, any hard liquor mixed with soda, champagne etc.) are not reccomended for Bandsters. And I have found that I do not get drunk or tipsy faster after being banded. I think its different for everyone, and therefore not one of those "sure things that applies to everyone." Basically, don't worry about having a glass of wine 3 times a year....really.

    Clothing Exchange

No, you're not wrong. I don't think anyone would trade a $50 bill for a $20. It's just not equal. But I agree, if there was a site that showed brands, sizes, and pics, I would definetly look at it.

    Clothing Exchange

I said no only because I would find myself dissapointed if the clothes that I traded for, or received were not the same quality or style that I gave or traded. Call me vain, lol, but I wear nice trendy plus size clothes for a women in her early 20s, and I would be upset if I recieved worn clothes from the 1980s as a trade.....it's just not equal, and how would you judge them as equal? Really, I have no idea, if someone would explain how they do it, maybe I'd be more inclined to participate.

WL contest-do i have an advantage

I wondered the same thing too, my local Curves posts women's weight loss (lbs and inches) on a bulletin board (with your permission of course), and I have opted to not let my weight loss be posted on the board. I don't want to mislead other women to think that my weight loss is due to Curves and their programs alone, because it's not. Unless there's an alterior motive to win the competition (prize money or gym membership etc.) I would join a weight loss challenge here on LBT with individuals that have also had the Lap-Band.
  6. I'm also part of the LGBTQ community.

  7. Yeah, because you treat people respectfuly and maturely? Your complete lack of knowledge and experience in this exact topic of the social construction of gender is a perfect example of the "journey" that you have yet to understand. You sound like a complete idiot! Just because you are older than I am, it does NOT mean that you are more intelligent or have more life experiences than I do...I'm pretty sure I have you beat in the intellectual abilities and life skills category. I can guarantee when you reply to this, you will demonstrate once again your lack of respect and competence in reguards to this subject.
  8. I wish someone had told me (that went to the same surgeon) what my Dr does for fills. That would have helped. I also wish someone would have told me about the suprise heavy menstrual period immediately after surgery which come to find out, is not uncommon.
  9. Actually it's from Psychology of Women, Sociology of Women, and the Social Construction of Sex (among many other relevant courses I've taken). They are mostly 500-600 level courses, god knows I haven't taken an introductory 200 level course in years!
  10. Nonviolent Studies aims to combat: Domestic Violence (for ALL PEOPLE) Stalking Violence in Schools (school shootings, bullying, etc.) Discrimination (based on race or ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, etc.) and Sexual Abuse (for children as well as adults) And yes, Nonviolent Studies are also feminist because feminists believe that ALL PEOPLE (young, old, men, women, intersexed, gays, lesbians, *I could go on forever) have a basic human right to feel safe and free from harm.
  11. I'd love to know what your intention was to provide an "other" category in the poll. Were you being facetious or genuinely being considerate?
  12. First let's start with some basics. *Sex - biological characteristics (XX=female, XY=male) *Gender - socially constructed ideals about males and females *Transgender - an individual who feels that they are neither male or female OR a male who subscribes to stereotypical female gendered scripts OR a female who identifies with male gender roles *Transexual - an individual who has reconstructive surgery to alter their reproductive organs to identify with a male or female *Intersexual - an individual who has intermingled male/female sex characteristics (previously "hermaphroditism") - This occurs in 1.7% of live human births (Almost 2 out of every 100 babies born) -How? Typically when a baby is born the genitalia clearly identify the baby as either a male or female, but there are measurements that a doctor can do to check as well. Believe it or not, the clitoris is the equvalent of the penis (external genitalia) (I can explain this too if you'd like). .5-1cm external genitalia is considered a clitoris (female) 2.5-4.5cm external genitalia is considered a penis (male) So what about the gap in between?? = INTERSEXUALITY Many things can cause this to happen: Turner Syndrome (XO chromosomes) =1 in 2,500 female births (the uterus and ovaries are missing) Klinefelter Syndrome (XXY chromosomes) 1 in 600 births (small penis/testes, feminized hips, small breasts) XYY Syndrome = 1 in 1,000 births (males are taller than average) Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH) = adrenal glands produce abnormally high amounts of androgens (male hormones) (the individual has a uterus and either a large clitoris or small penis) Androgen-Insensitivity Syndrome (AIS) = genetic males cannot utilize androgen (they don't have internal reproductive organs, but they do have a small penis) 5 Alpha-Reductase Deficiency = prevents prenatal differentiation of the external genetalia tissue into a penis (there is no penis but the individual has facial hair, deep voice, broad shoulders) Many times when there is any speculation as to a baby's sex, the doctors perform a surgery that shapes the genitalia into a clitoris, whether or not that baby had ovaries or not....leaving many males with clitorises. So as you can see, it IS possible for an individual to be neither a male or a female. And who's to say they have to choose? Please be respectful of these individuals because 1-2 out of every 100 people that you know could be intersexed! *This information was typed by myself from a feminist course taught at Kansas State University in 2009. I am a Psychology major and a Women's Studies minor, as well as a minor in Nonviolent Studies. If you have any more questions or would like to know more about anything that I discussed, I will answer them with the training that I have recieved.
  13. I just wanted to say thank you for providing an "other" category for individuals who identify with a gender other than male or female. I hope people take it seriously because it is respectful to recognize that not everyone is either a man or a woman. High-five for you lol.

What test did your doc require pre op?

I agree. My surgeon also required a Pulminology exam. And I think there was one or two more that I can't think of. I spent literally an entire day at the hospital doing testing, only to come back the next week and get my Upper G.I. (you have to go under anesthesia for this).

    WHICH DO U Perferr????

Skim. It has all the same nutrients and protein that whole milk has, just less fat...and that's why we're all here, right...less fat?
  17. PBing or vomiting several times a week OR eating a little too much/fast and getting stuck once a day Which is worse in terms of risk for band complications?
  18. k-statearmywife

Which is worse for your band...?

Thanks for your reply. I actually havn't vomited or PB since I was banded. I am however still learning what I can and can't eat, and things do get stuck or go down painfully sometimes when I'm not paying attention to chewing a billion times. I just wanted to know which situation could cause more complications - I was told that repeatedly getting stuck can cause stretching of the pouch, and vomiting can cause slippage...so in terms of complications, which one was worse.

Which is worse for your band...?

Yeah, I don't think Minime was refering to my reply to you as being "flame." Maybe you should read my original post, and see the way you replied to it. "Vomiting is bad. period" was not an answer to my question....it was stating the obvious. Both of my senarios are not good for you or your band, everybody should know this. What I was asking was which was worse than the other....so stating that one of my senarios is bad is quite obvious. And so is your attitude.
  20. k-statearmywife

Which is worse for your band...?

I never implied that PBing was the same thing as vommiting...hence the "or" in my original post. And thanks for not answering my question.

    lap-band in college

I had my surgery as a Junior on a Wednesday, and my butt was in those seats on Monday morning! It was hard to stay awake because the pain meds made me sleepy, and I definetly walked slower to my classes. The desk tops in lecture kinda rubbed my belly, and it was also difficult to bend over and pick anything off the floor or out of my bag from a sitting position. All of my professors were very cool about the whole experience. So even having my surgery in the middle of a 15 credit hour semster, I still made all As in my classes and am holding a 3.6GPA at Kansas State University!

    Ground beef vs Ground turkey

You should get rid of meat altogether and try a leaner alternative that is better for you AND the environment! Try Morningstar Crumbles, Texturized Vegetable Protien (TVP), or TOFU in place of ground beef or turkey in nearly any recipie! Seriously...think about what's healthiest for you and the planet.

  24. My pre-op testing was over $300 but my surgery was only $23.00 and I still have $400+ left on my deductable. I say it truly depends on who gets your file/paperwork at the tricare place. It's never the same for two people.
