  1. Hi Everyone, I've been lurking here for awhile and received my surgery date (Nov 2nd) earlier this week. The advice you all give is great and now I need some. I made the decision to only tell a few select people about my surgery and, for the most part, that's worked very well. One of the people I told is my sister in law, who is a nurse and who is also overweight (since she has been married to my brother). Up until yesterday, things have been going ok but yesterday, she BEGGED me not to have the surgery! I was really shocked because she was so adament about it. She wouldn't really say what she was so upset about and she knows that the surgery is not at all like RNY, but I have to say I was really taken aback. I've explained the surgery to her and as a nurse, I would think she could see the difference in the risks of the lapband surgery and RNY (which was a big issue for her when I first told her I'm having the surgery). She was actually the last person whom I thought wouldn't be supportive! Any thoughts or advice??? Thanks. Denise

    How would you handle this?

I really appreciate all of the feedback you all have given me. Y'all are GREAT! And I think you're right about it being about her own issues. My brother (her husband) is supportive but her reaction just caught me offguard. I'm definitely going ahead with the surgery---nothing is going to stop that! Thanks again for the feedback! Denise
  3. HI Everyone, I"m new here but have been lurking (and have done a few posts) for quite awhile and you all are great! I've learned so much! Anyway, I got my surgery date today---November 2nd! I'm so excited!!! I look forward to starting this journey and I'm so thankful I found this board! Denise
  4. Hi Everyone, I am so excited! Today I had my consult with my surgeon and the next step is to schedule the surgery. I'm doing at at VCU/MCV Medical Center in Richmond, VA. They are a "Center for Excellence" and began with the original lapbands years ago. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and I'm looking forward to this journey!!! Denise
  5. HI everyone! My name is Denise and I live in Richmond, VA. I'm new to all of this but am very excited about the lapband. For the past couple of months, I've been doing research and have decided this is what I want to do. I am self-pay, as my insurance doesn't cover the surgery and my psychologist appointment is tomorrow. Next Monday, I meet with the dietician and surgeon, Dr. Carbonell of the VCU Obesity Center. I"ve only told a few people about the band and for the most part, everyone has been supportive. The odd thing is that my sister-in-law, who is an RN, has been trying to talk me out of it. She is also overweight and I'm not sure why she would want to talk me out of it. Anyone had experience with this? Anyway, I'm excited and thanks for all of the great info on this site!
