    BMI 32 / 60 lbs ...

Hello Katlynn and everyone: It is nice to see the low bmi group picking up! Kat: I'm sorry about your MIL and you know her best, but is it possible she didn't want to hurt your feelings when she mentioned your weight? Just a thought... people are weird. I've had some really weird comments in my day that run from the awesomely sensitive: "You look so great lately" (very kind words) to the ridiculously insensitive: "Wow, you lost alot of weight, you look SO MUCH Better!!" Ugh. Ha ha Meantime: I cannot wait for my band-- but it is a long wait until January.
  2. Perhaps you should ask these professionals WHY they feel you might be better served by a gastric bypass? They may have beneficial information for you that will either put your mind at ease or help you consider other options. Another thing to do: contact your surgeon and ask about this as well. I realize GBS is much more 'drastic' but surgery is surgery-- and you want to make the right choice and feel that everyone on your team is very behind it from the start. hope this helps!
  3. ((((Hugs)))) I feel for you-- your post was very interesting to me too b/c I am almost 39 years old with 40 right around the corner. I think your surgeon is being super-responsible and maybe you want to follow his/ her advice. Give conservative measures one more try... you are very young and maybe you can lose the weight and keep it off with good medical supervision. Remember: the lap band isn't an easy answer-- it is just a tool. As a counterpoint, my story is this: Like I said, I'm almost 39 and weighed 193.6 in the surgeon's office at 5'4 when I went in to see her (Dr. Ren in NYC.) Though I have to go the self-pay route b/c I have no health conditions, the doc immediately indicated me for the surgery. I believe the reason she did so was primarily b/c of my extensive weight loss attempt history (been trying my whole life and have lost and gained repeatedly) and probably b/c of my no-nonsense attitude and approach. I happen to be a health professional and she didn't mince words with me. I asked: Is there any chance I can do this myself-- and she said, looks very unlikely... IF YOU WERE in your TWENTIES, I'd think differently-- but you've been trying for years without success. See? What I am trying to say is that you may have an opportunity to get medical help to lose weight and not have to have surgery. The upside is that if you DON'T do well with medical intervention, you'll already be under the care of a bariatric surgeon and can take the next step within the next year or so. I hope this helps and makes sense...

    Pre-op diet

I am on day 5 of a liquid diet. I was given the choice of what Protein shakes to use: requirements are at least 50 grams of protein per day, 1000 calories, under 35 grams of fat. I am counting down the days to my surgery (Monday 9.28.09)-- but I know it will be more of the same after!! My doc's protocol: 10 days thin liquids post op 10 days purees then introduce normal food... So far, it seems like I've 'lost' about 5 pounds-- probably mainly water-- but I'll take it.
  5. Ghetto: do you have a history of throwing up after you eat like that? If you do, please tell your surgeon. You might need some counseling or support... Vomiting (whether on purpose or by accident) is dangerous after lap band. I agree with the other advice you received. Take one step at a time. The pre-op diet is hard for a 17 year old to follow, there is a natural 'rebellion' at that age-- it's programmed into your brain. Try to turn you rebellious energy against the diet into something positive: use that energy to tell yourself that you are going to do it your way-- and decide to follow the plan that was given to you because YOU want to. Only you can ultimately decide how to handle your eating behaviors... now and in the future. Don't beat yourself up-- just use your remorse to propel you forward to make the right choice next time. good luck and good health
