Greetings! I have struggled with weight for 12 years now. I have experienced some success in the past with Atkins and Jennie Craig but with gaining all and more within 2 years. My husband and physician started recommending lap band last summer. As a type A person I could not see how that was needed. I have succeeded in most everything in my life, so why not get control over my weight? In January 2009, I told my doctor that I was doing Nurtisystem and if I had not made significant progress by June then I would start looking into lap band. Well June came I was actually heavier than I have ever been. Thus, I started my research. I went to the bariatric center on July 10th. The scale said "no whining!" Very Funny!I am 90% sure that I will be having the surgery in January 2010. The procedure is not covered by my insurance. Since it is medically recommended, I can use my flex dollars left from 2009 and the full amount from my husband and mine in 2010 (we can each take $5000). It's still out of pocket, but pre-tax and not a drain on the bank account.I'ver read/studied about the procedure and stories. I am specifically looking for how long people have kept their changes and maintained their weight loss. I do not want to spend that kind of money just to be back where I'm at. Thanks for anyone sharing!
4/18/12 I am 2 years post op and maintaining my weight loss! Awesome procedure...certainly not a magic bullet if that is what you are looking for and required some major life changes but has been an excellent tool for me. The only side effects for me is a re-occurring protein deficiency (add protein) and the periodic disappointment of my husband for not enjoying our dates as much that used to surround food since I don't eat or enjoy as much. I periodically would like a pb and j sandwhich on white bread or pancakes for dinner...loose 100 pounds or pbj? I choose the weight loss!
