I started this journey back in March of this year. After talking with my husband about wanting to have a child. I am dealing with PCOS and on the message board I use I started reading about a lot of women have WLS to help them achieve weight loss and succeeding in getting pregnant. So that got me thinking about having WLS done. I started to do some research and found a great doctor in my area and attended my first seminar in March.
I was not sure at first which one I wanted to do and need some research on the different kinds. I knew right away I did not want to have RNY or DS done, as that did some major re-routing of organs. I was stuck between VSG (sleeve) and getting a band. After a lot of soul searching and talking with the staff at the doctors office and with my husband we decided to go forward with the lap band. Just the idea of the tool working all the time and that whenever it seems like it is failing I can go in and get a fill, unlike with any of the others where if it does not work that is it. The weight loss might not be as fast, but it will be long lasting compared to some of the other outcomes I have seen. Famous people that have had RNY gaining the weight back. Seeing first hand someone at my doctors office having RNY and it failed now doing the band. And another person at that same office that just had the band put in after the RNY failed him as well. So all of this really helped me choose the band.
So I started gathering all the paper work, getting the letters I needed, etc and submitted them to the Doctor's office. And the wait began...Then in July I got the email I was waiting for...I have been apporved by my insurance carrier to call and schedule the appointment. I was so over joyed and thrilled. We still needed to come up with $1200 to pay for admin fees and the Optifast so I did not call right away. Well then 2 days later I got a letter in the mail. I figured it would be the same thing saying I was approved. Not so... it was from my Doctor's office saying that they would NOT be able to do the surgery because the third party biller my insurance company uses will no longer be used by the office. They apologized and said they would help out how ever they could. At this time I have been battling on and off again with depression. And this just really set me back. I was crying and just feeling again like nothing was going right for us in the world. I emailed the office to see if there were any doctors they could recommend or what else I could do to use them. If they would be reapplying with the 3rd party biller. The email back was they would not be reapplying with them but she was in talks with my insurance carrier to see if they could just bill them directly and should know in a week and would let me know.
So after the high then the low I was feeling a little better hoping my insurance company would ok them. We got the money together and ready for her to re tell me I was approved again. I really was dreading having to find a new doctor and re go through a lot of what I had already been working on for the last few months. Then the email came early in August. I am approved again!!!! YEAH!!!! I called right away and made the appointment. So September 4th I go in and my life changes from here on out...
My goals with having the WLS are:
1 - get healthy and off all my medications
2 - have children
3 - if unable to find a living donor, donate a kidney to my husbandSo I am very much looking forward to a thinner, healther and much happier me!!!
