I am a retired psych nurse, wife to the same man for 50 years, raised four children, have five grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. I have been what my family always called "healthy" most of my life. I married very young and started having babies so that by the age 26, I had had all my children. For most of my life, my obesity didn't seem to be a big deal to me. It bothered my husband far more than it did me. I love him dearly but I have been on more diets "for him" than I even want to think about. I have tried most of them too! Up and down, up and down. A person could get dizzy, you know. Yes, I have been successful on lots of diets but no matter how long I kept it off, I would always put all the weight back on and sometimes even more. Ugh! That's like carrying a extra anvil on your back.I never had a lot of health problems with the exception of the once a year bronchial pneumonia, and the occassional asthma episode. My primary physician would starve to death if he depended on my office visits. Oh yes, by the time I was in my forties, I had the big hysterecomy, had to overcome a serious car wreck or two but mostly healthy..or least I thought I was.Well, low and behold, I had a little dizzy episode at work one day when I was in my middle 50's. (By this time, my weight was around 240). Guess what, I had some hypertension. Then my thyroid decided to take a nose-dive and the first thing I knew I was taking medications for both of them and seeing my doctor more in a year than I had in five years. Finally got the B/p and thyroid fairly level with meds and continue to work. When I hit my 60's, things really started to go bad for me. I was hurt at work and had a rotor-cuff tear. The steriods didn't help do anything but make me want to eat more and more. By the time I had a repair of the shoulder and got back to work, I had gained about 15 pounds. Okay, here I am at 255 now. I went on another diet, lost that 15 pounds at least five different times, between re-gaining it again. In 2004, I was injured at work again (remember, psych unit nurse), had a knee repair but knew I would have to have a replacement. In 2005, I retired and in 2007 got the new knee. Since then, my weight started going up, my B/P meds increased from one pill a day to five, my lungs starting failing and my legs wouldn't hold me up anymore. I had hit 338. I figured I would die a fat old lady with hypertension, COPD, and Bad legs.
In Decemebr of 2008, my primary physician said that I wouldn't see my 70's at the rate I was going. My obseity has caught up with me and was causing some serious problems with my health. He ask me to think about Lapband. Gosh, I thought I was too old for it already. However, I decided to attend a seminar one Saturday and from there I started my journey. I had surgery approval in July 2009 and on August 11, 2009, I had my lapband surgery. I am on the way to a new life, a healthy life, a movitated life. I plan to live to be a old lady now. Move over, you skinny people...make room for me!
