Thanks for all the good advice. If we are unable to talk openly about this more and work through the feelings, I will definitely seek out therapy. Just a clarification though, we are not married and don't live together - we've been together for 8 months so its a fairly new relationship. He's my first serious guy since my husband died suddenly in September 2004. I always felt "not good enough" with my husband and he was really bothered by my weight fluctuations. This guy loves me for how I am and it's been so liberating to have this for the first time in my life. Who knows what tomorrow brings? The bottom line is the communication issue - if we can't communicate, there are bigger things wrong than me losing weight and being more attractive to other men.

I'm sorry that your having to deal with this Your family is supposed to be a support, not tear you down like that. Boundaries are good thing and very often we have to build them when people are clueless and cruel. I'd also ask my husband to back me up and not allow such comments to go without sticking up for you and setting them straight. Good luck, family dynamics are the hardest to deal with. Hugs to you.

That's really wonderful about your hubby. Mom probably doesnt quite understand enough about what this entails - I think so many people automatically assume that it's the same as the gastric bypass which is so much more drastic and not reversible. Give her a little time and maybe a few links to some informational sites so she can read in her own time and then be able to ask questions. If you get her to that stage, I think she'll be supportive of your decision.

Considering Lap Band A few ?s (Newbie)

Hi there. Congrats on taking that first step, I'm going to my informational seminar on the 17th so I'm new too. Obviously I havent had the surgery yet but in regards to migraines... I'd probably be really careful what liquids I consumed. Go for the homemade or canned broths but read the labels carefully. Things like MSG (more prevalent in the powdered broths) can really bring on a migraine for me. On the PCOS side, I'd love to see some responses to that because it seems more common with people who are overweight and I understand that it is tied in with metabolic syndrome which may be the underlying condition that causes difficulty in weight loss. Good luck Mindy. -
I can't believe this hours long drive they are expecting people to make. It's unreal :angry Although faced with having to pay out of pocket, I think it may be worth it. I would think that there is some sort of appeal process that you could make a case for not having to go that far?? Generally speaking, I've heard that sometimes insurance will put up road blocks and you just have to keep knocking them down. Perhaps they are hoping that you'll change your mind. OK, I'm just a smidge cynical :cry

Oh, that's just ridiculous SHEESH! Keep pressing on and hopefully you'll be able to get a closer doc approved.

Does anyone think that the gas has more to do with what is being eaten than just a side effect of the band? I really don't want to be farting all the time LOL Ah heck, I'd at least be thinner... is farting more socially acceptable when you're thin? Hah!

Joanne, I'm just starting out and havent even gone to the informational meeting yet. However, after reading everything I could get my hands on over the past several weeks, I am sure that if approved, will go right ahead and get banded. My insurance appears to cover it :clap2: latebloomer, nope - your ahead of me LOL I'll be watching your progress through this incredible journey. All the best to you

It's all about parents teaching their kids. I've shared with both my kids how difficult it was growing up as a fat kid, the ridicule and scorn I received from my peers and the indifference from adults that sat by and watched. Both of them are very sensitive and have set their peers straight when such things come up. I'm so proud when they tell me of an incident where they stood up and said something when comments were made. It starts with us.

Welcome :biggrin1: I'm new too and can't wait to see your progress.

Having done this last year, I know what a big step it is. Kudos!! You've just acknowledged that you will not tolerate ever getting to those sizes again.

I'm Koko and found this Forum yesterday while doing an internet search and really appreciate all the information I've been able to gather here. I am going to an informational class on August 17th to see if getting a lap band is for me. At the risk of boring the heck out of you, I'll give a little background.... In April of 2004 I started low carbing with the Atkins WOE and within a year had lost 100lbs. Since then, I've found that I need to eat more to feel full and am getting too many calories in to lose weight so while I'm still low carbing, I'm not losing anymore. It seems that there may be hope with the lap band because I will feel full on a smaller amount of food and the food recommended (as far as I've read) tends to be on the low carb side. I have another 150lbs to lose and am so excited that this may be the solution for me. If you could go back to where I am now, what do you wish you knew? Please give it to me... the good, the bad, the ugly, the unexpected. Thanks :scared:
