Yesterday during a routine office visit, I brought up my desire to lose weight (for the 10,000th time). Doc mentioned she'd had a patient just about my age who had a lap band put in several months ago and said she is doing exceptionally well. Said the patient has the same insurance I have, so if I had any interest, and if my medical history and failed weight loss attempts were sufficient to meet the insurer's requirements, she would get me a referral. Highly suspicious since it seems like my provider never covers anything, I told her I wanted to verify that my insurance would, in fact, cover the procedure, so while I was waiting on her to do "doctor business" in another room, I called my provider and, sure enough, THEY DO cover it. What a very pleasant surprise. Now I just need to get up enough courage to pursue it. I am terrified of surgery and have not had an invasive medical procedure in my life except childbirth 28 years ago. Part of me really wants to do this but the rest is frightened, so I am looking for as much information as I can get on the process. My doctor's referral coordinator is supposedly working on getting me in to see a surgeon, so I don't know anymore than that yet. I need some courage and encouragement--I have a wonderful support network at home and really NEED to lose 100# plus. I am not typically a motivated person but I am almost 50 and am tired of wearing this "fat suit" (no offense intended, I hope everyone knows the feeling I'm referring to). Thanks for having me here, and I hope to share positive news with everyone.
