Breastfeeding with the band
lamber2299 replied to puddin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I worked at a WIC Clinic as a Breastfeeding Consultant and I told all my clients that you can expect to burn about 500 extra calories a day breastfeeding. You should eat at least 1500 to 1700 calories even when losing weight while breastfeeding. But you are right, if you restrict your calories too much your milk supply will decrease. If you are already supplementing I would suggest that you pump between feedings to increase your milk supply, continue to drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest, and try to be as stress-free as possible. You can also take fenugreek, a herbal supplement that has been for thousands of years to increase milk supply. I used to get it at the Vitamin Shoppe, but that was several years ago. Congratulations on your new baby and know that you are giving your baby a wonderful gift by breastfeeding. -
Christmas Weightloss Challenge
lamber2299 replied to Fluffy Jen's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m definitely in! I want to be in Onederland by my birthday which is January 27th. I’ve been losing about 1 1/2 to 2 pounds a week, so I think 15 pounds will push me and keep me on track to reach my birthday goal. -
I played with a BMI calculator online until I found what the highest weight considered "average" for my height and age. I am 37 and 5'4" so for me it is 150.

Where's the weirdest place you've had to slime?
lamber2299 replied to mgmagnolia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My very first time to slime was last night at our church fall festival. I didn't have time to eat dinner after work before we left for the festival and so I was starving. The only choice of food was pizza a BBQ sandwiches. I bought a sandwich and ate some of the meat. I guess I ate too fast and I had a horrible pain in my chest. This has happened at home a few times and I've taken a few Papaya pills and it went away. Unfortunately I didn't have any with me so I made the biggest mistake of my banded life. I tried to wash the stuck meat down with some water. It was like a volcano. As soon as the water hit my stomach it came back up with vengeance. I jumped up to run to the bathroom but only made it to a grassy area outside the building. Of course several people kept asking me if I was OK. I just blew it off as if I had just strangled on the water. I didn't want to explain everything to people who don't even know about my band. I told myself I would never eat something new in public in case this happened, but I let my hunger override my good sense. I guess the band can't fix that problem. -
colder weather and band getting tighter
lamber2299 replied to klutzyazhel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry, I live in Texas and it's not cold here yet. However, if I drink cold water or milk I feel very tight. I just keep my water botttles on the counter so they will be room temperature. Maybe cold weather affects the band the same way cold liquid does? -
August '09 Bandsters!
lamber2299 replied to RebeccaJ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded August 18th. Thing have gone well so far. I have had a few episodes of pressure in my chest when I eat too fast, but no major PBing. I had my first fill on October 1st and have 5cc in a 11cc band. My next fill is October 28th. I'm not sure how much they will put in, but I am definitely not at my "sweet spot" yet. I still can eat more than 1/2 cup per meal and when I only eat that amount I am hungry after just a few hours. I have continued to gradually lose weight, but 20 lbs came during the 4 weeks of liquids pre and post-op. So I have only lost 12 lbs in the last 7 weeks. I'm just getting into an exercise routine, so I hope to start seeing results from that soon. I had to have another surgery for endometriosis 5 weeks after my lapband surgery, so my recovery has taken longer than expected. I am excited about my weight loss so far and look forward to a new thinner me in the future. -
What I couldn't live without post-op
lamber2299 replied to shrinkingV's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The hospital gave me a little homemade oblong pillow to use just as you mentioned. It is great! I've been banded for 7 weeks and I still use the little pillow in my office chair. It provides just enough lower back support. I love my little pillow and greatly appriciate whoever it was that made it for me. -
Office workers-What's for lunch?
lamber2299 replied to carbgrl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I work at a University with a Panda Express in the food court. I've discovered that there are several entrees that have under 250 cal. for the small al la carte size. Mushrooms & Chicken and Green Beans & Chicken are my favorite. I usually bring my lunch, but it's a good option for those days I don't have time to prepare something from home. -
Can you feel your band?
lamber2299 replied to joanie63's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No I can't feel my band at all. I can sort of feel my port under my skin, but not the actual band around the stomach. I can sort of sic myself out about things like that too, so I understand where you are coming from. -
I was banded 3 1/2 weeks ago and lost 12 lbs pre-op and 10 more in the first 2 weeks after surgery. Once I started mushies, I stopped loosing. I am eating about 1000 calories a day, 50-60 grams of protein, and walking everyday. I know I don't have restriction yet since I haven't had my first fill, but I'm still eating way fewer calories. How can I get my weight loss started again? I don't want to fail at the band after all the money and pain I've put into it already.

Thank you for all of the replies. It's good to know it's not just me. I get to start back exercising at the gym tomorrow (I had to wait 4 weeks post op according to my doctor). I'm hoping that this will give my metabolism a boost. I will also get to start eating solid food and plan on a mostly chicken, fish, and veggie diet.

I have to wait until Oct.1st. It seems like forever away.

Everyone does heal differently. I didn't feel 100% until about three weeks after surgery, but I am a university professor and I had my surgery one week before class started this fall. I was able to drive to class, walk the 15 minutes to my office, and stand for 3 hours to teach. I admit, I was spent for the rest of the day and had to come home and take a nap but I made it through! My doctor also required me to get up and start walking 30 minutes a day the day after surgery. He want me at 1 mile by a month after surgery.

I am 10 days post banding and I still have pain (especially at the port site) and a lot of bruising at all of the incisions. How much longer will this last?

Get a new doctor! I originally went to one doctor and after several months of back and forth, was denied. I had to constantly call the insurance company to find out the status and they were always waiting for something from the doctor. After I was offically denied for lack of a six month nutrition counseling, I spent several more months trying to find out from the doctor what I needed to do. The office would never call me back. I finally switched to another doctor in March, started the nutrition classes in April, and recieved a call in July that my insurance had switched to a three-month nutrition program, and am scheduled for surgery on the 18th. There are a lot of good doctors out there, but there, but I think having a good office staff is just as important.

OK, Who has an AUGUST surgery date??!!
lamber2299 replied to Jodi73's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is the 18th and I have to go back to work on the 25th. I am a professor at UTA so it is not a physically demanding job, but I do have a 10 minutes walk from the parking lot and three flights of stairs to climb. Also, my classes are 3 hours long, which means I have to stand the entire time and can't really sip on anything like they said to do during the post-op liquid stage. I am really nervous about to being ready for it all in one week; however, I am so sick of starving to death on the pre-op diet. I can only have 5 8-oz Optifast shakes per day. I am on the 7th day of 14 days and want nothing more than to raid the fridge and eat the left over pork chops I made for my family for dinner. -
I will never again be kicked off a roller coaster for being to big for the seat. I was at an amusement park with my kids this summer and got booted off a ride for being too big. It was the most humiliating moment of my life. Not only for me, but for my kids too. They are 10, 14, and 16. Really tough ages to have everyone on a ride and in line laughing at your fat mom. My surgery is August 18th and next year my kids and I are planning a Roller Coaster vacation. We are going to spend two weeks traveling the country and riding the most amazing roller coasters. We live in Texas and have season passes to Six Flags, so we are planning to hit several other Six Flags Parks. The memory of that day and the anticipation of the trip next summer where I will not have to worry about not fitting on the rides is my motivation right now.

What did you do to survive Clear Liquid pre-op diet?
lamber2299 replied to incolorado's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on the 7th of 14 days of 5 OptiFast Protein Shakes a day only! I envy those of you that can have broth. Any variety in flavor would be heaven right now. I have to admit that I broke down and ate a granola bar last night because I was nauseous from hunger and couldn't sleep. I hope I didn’t sabotage myself, but I was miserable. While I have lost 10 lbs this week, I am starving! What are ya’ll doing to fight hunger? -
