After years and years of yo-yo dieting, I made the decision to have the Lap Band surgery performed. My hope was to get some help with a life struggle. I was very healthy and fit for the majority of my life, but after a drastic life change in 1993, I began gaining weight. I moved to Virginia after growing up in California. I lived with my boyfriend who spent a lot of time traveling on business. Being an introvert, I found it difficult to adjust to this new way of life and I spent many, many lonely days and nights crying. Unfortunately, I learned that the tears went away when Ben & Jerry came to visit. I even got approval from a co-worker when she shared with me that she'd experienced the same thing when her husband would travel. She'd nicknamed the event something like "Turtle Dove" days. This meant that whenever her husband would leave town, she'd run off to the grocery store to make a purchase of ice cream from an ice cream parlor that had the same name. So, I got to the point where I'd drop my sweetie off at the airport and make a beeline to the grocery store or the Ben & Jerry's parlor in the neighborhood for a pint or two of my desired flavor of the day. I couldn't wait until he waved goodbye and enter the plane. I was off! My mother can describe my lifelong addiction to candy. From the time I was a small child, candy was my friend. So, needless to say I loved candy, but candy didn't love me. Evidenced by my first dental visit ending with 8 new fillings and as an adult who kept a stash of candy by her side during those long, lonely winter months. Pounds and more pounds began to follow me around. Lose 'em, then gain 'em back. Fasting, Phentremine, Phen-phen, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig (actually worked there and gained 20 pounds), Nutri-system, Diet and daily exercise at the gym, Michael Thurman, 60 Pounds in 60 Days, 6-week Makeover tapes, Cabbage Soup Diet, Atkins for Life (lost 65, gained 70), Lindora (weekly B-12 shots), Herbalife, Hydroxycut, and sadly, there's more. I've done it. I've lost it, but I've gained it back and then some. After all of that, I just really didn't know what else to do. I'd almost decided to just live an obese, unhealthy life. But then reality set in...that's just really not me. So age is now a factor and although it's so much more difficult to lose weight, I really don't want to live the remainder of my life fat, unfit and unhealthy. So I needed some serious help. I did the research and made a decision. I talked to my primary care physician and the Lap Band surgery dream, became a reality. The surgery was done in one day and I went home after recovery. Very little pain, and the thought of food was not primary in my life any longer. May 18, 2009 was my surgery date. I've just experienced my first adjustment. It was pain-free. I've lost about 20 pounds and I have about 80 to go. I'm glad I made the decision. I think the Lap Band has taken the place of ice cream and candy as my friend, and I will do what I need to, for the Lap Band to keep my best interest at heart.
