I began looking at the lap band when my primary doctor suggested it. I am 5 feet tall and was 297 lbs. My father is an insulin dependent diabetic and also has heart problems. Although I wasn't experiencing these problems, my blood work was starting to show increases in blood sugar and my pressure was going up little by little. Also, I was having terible pain in my back and feet. Arthritis had settled in my spine and walking was difficult. I'm 41 yrs old and I felt like 70. So I began preparing for my surgery by going on Medifast in March. It was the most difficult part so far. I was only allowed to eat one small meal per day for the first 3 weeks, then no solid food at all right up to my surgery date, which was July 7th. It allowed me to lose 35 lbs. I spent about 8 hours in the hospital the day of surgery and have been recovering rather quickly since. I followed the strict clear liquid diet for 3 days and then began full liquids for the next week or so. But I was hungry so I began adding soft foods like cottage cheese, applesauce and ricotta. At my post op appt. the PA told me it was ok to start that a little early as long as I was tolerating it. I have lost a total of 47.2 lbs. so far. So now, July 22, I am drinking protein shakes (that took a while to figure out how to make one that I could get past my nose...) eating mostly soft foods and can tolerate some solids. In a few weeks I go for my first adjustment and hope to be well on my way to more weight loss. My daughters think its funny that all my pants are too big now and they find it hilarious to "pants" me whenever they get the chance (at home that is...) I have more energy and I'm feeling like I can finally do this!
