*Always Cold*
currysusan123 replied to renniemommie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am COLD!!! I am a believer that it is the loss of Grehlin (SP?). I still have over 120 lbs to lose so I know I still have adequate fat insulation. I was one of those always extra hot people. Never using a jacket in winter, only sleeping with a sheet, A/C temp kept at 68 degrees, sweating all the time. One other explanation to no longer being hot is that my blood pressure is now normal after losing these 87 lbs. But that dont explain the extreme coldness I feel. I now sit with a heating pad, wear a sweater, use throw blankets, and sleep with an electric blanket. That being said, I would not trade this for not having surgery. -
Ghrelin and sleep and heat regulation
currysusan123 replied to Eureka-C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I have lost 84 lbs so far. At 281 I still have 130 lbs to lose. I have been REALLY been having problems keeping warm. I knew this would be an issue when I was thin, but I still have a lot of weight to lose. Before my VGS my body temp. was excessively hotter than anyone else. I was always hot when everyone else was comfortable. I just figured it was because my blood pressure was high then and it is normal now. It is interesting to find out about the effects of Ghrelin. Thanks for the info. As far as sleep patterns thus far. Before surgery, I had undiagnosed apnea. I snored horribly. I never got deep rest, waking every hour or so to adjust sleeping position. Now I don't snore. I tend to only need 6-7 hrs sleep. I no longer need a 3pm nap. I never have remembered dreams, so I dont know about REM sleep before and after. -
Diet Carbonated Drink
currysusan123 replied to chellnichole's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was instructed to never drink carbonated stuff. I'm sure taken in moderation they would be fine, but I am all or nothing when it comes to diet coke. If I started drinking it, that would be all I ever drank. I've given it up for over 6 months now so why go back to the addiction. So, I would say if you can consume in moderation, go for it. But I can't do the moderation thing. -
Yep! When I am full, my nose runs and I sometimes get chills. Also, I am COLD all the time which was not normal before surgery. I am 5 months post op. I've lost 79 lbs. but I still weigh 286 lbs. I new my temperature guage would change, but I didn't expect it to be so soon. I thought when I get to 150, but not yet...Before surgery, I would sweat constantly, and NEVER used a jacket, even in the coldest of winter. NOW I sleep with electric blanket and sit with a heating pad to keep me warm. Weird huh.

I am so happy with the weight I have lost. The 41 is since surgery on July 16th. If I add in the weight I lost on my preop diet, I am at 58lbs since July 1st! I am never sure whether I should count that in my weight loss ticker or just the weight I have lost since surgery lol. I got tired of saying pre-op weight and surgery weight. 365 in June (1 month before surgery) 355 July 7 (Surgery date) I separated them for a while. When I lost 50 lbs total I decided it didnt matter anymore so I add pre surgery weight loss in my total...

Im 3 months out. I average 800-950 cals /day. My fat grams and carbs are somewhat higher than others. My Protein is around 40-60/day...(Not quite enough) and Water consumption is about 1/2 of what it should be. I'm averaging about 3 lbs a week loss. My exercise is sporatic and not strenuous (slow treadmeal, Swimming, shopping). But I have lost 65 lbs in 3 months :biggrin0:

On to pureed foods, need recommendations.
currysusan123 replied to katyjones's topic in Food and Nutrition
I fell in love with mashed cauliflower. Boiled cauliflower until soft, drain Water off, add a small amount of skim milk, smart balance butter, salt, pepper, & onion powder. Blend until creamy. It may sound gross, but it is yummy. Its a good substitute for mashed potatoes without the carbs. -
what do you wish you knew before hand
currysusan123 replied to salty91's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish I had taken the Pre-op low fat diet more seriously. I allowed myself several high fat meals the week before surgery (including a fish fry, wedding cake & many party foods). As a result, my liver was fatty and my surgery and recovery time was twice as long. The dr had a hard time lifting my liver to perform the sleeve. So...STICK TO YOUR LOWFAT PRE-OP DIET. You will be happy in the long run. Unlike the previous posts, I already had my gallbladder removed years earlier. I am thankful that I dont have to worry about gallstones now. Some surgeons take out the gallbladder at the same time. It may be something to discuss with surgeon. -
UGGGG... Its a good thing there is nothing bad to eat in my house....all I can find to brainlessly munch is pickle juice, Protein bars:eek:, & sf pudding:mad0: Oh yea tums i guess i could munch on tums:drool:. I soooo want ice cream and candy bars....GRRRRR:drool5:. Its 11:00 watching Big Brother on dvr and wanting to munch..... OK this too shall pass.....I know there are things that I can munch on its just that they aren't here now. Even if they were, they aren't what I want. Feeling better now, I guess I just needed to write my feelings down..Thanks for listening to my scattered thoughts....

Yes it is that time of the month. I didn't even put 2 & 2 together. I guess that explains the ravenous cravings.

Saving up money to get the sleeve in mexico
currysusan123 replied to kerri21's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My cash price was 12900. Plus 250 consult and ?200 Psyc eval. I only work Jan. - April at a tax office. I saved at least 1/2 my income and 2 yrs tax returns. I just told husband since insurance wouldnt pay and he wouldn't help me get a loan that my pay check was not for bills... it is for my dream that I have had for over 10 years....I had a few $ set backs like husband getting laid off for a month and we had to use my money to live. Then when he was back working he got a loan for a $20,000 boat that he somehow forgot that he needed 1600. tax money for...guess where that came from. RANT RANT...Anyway, you can save it...it can be done. Its your dream and you can find a way to make it happen. I think I appriciate my surgery more because I worked so hard for it. I didn't have insurance to pay my way. I PAID $12,900 CASH....:001_unsure: -
I first tried the adult chewable vitamins. They didn't work for me. Then I tried Flinstones chewable. They hurt me too. Now I am using Gummy vitamins. I have One a day Kids jolly rancher flaver gummies. They are GREAT... No nasty vitamin burps afterwords & no nausia. I am a true believer of the gummies.

How long did your Sleeve Procedure take?
currysusan123 replied to Ibejjo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was 3 hrs. I didn't follow pre op diet well enough...my liver was really fatty. Recovery was 3 hrs too because I woke up in so much pain they knocked me back out. I ADVISE EVERYONE I CAN TO FOLLOW THE PRE-OP DIET FAITHFULLY. It is worth it. -
I would rather have a big but and hips and a flat stomach than this massive stomach that hangs to my knees. At least when you guys get thin, your butt skin wont be hanging past your knees like my stomach will. Im starting at 365 lbs and Im 5'2". After my 55 lbs lost people are jokingly saying I am being Wringed like a rag from the head down because my stomach is still so big and dangling. SAD HUH! Well anyway... at least I can live life now and its only gonna get better...:001_smile:

A little LOST! - Any tips
currysusan123 replied to Nene16's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My pain was minimum. I took iv pain meds day 1 and part of day 2. After I got home I took 1 dose of liquid loratab and thru it up. Never took anything (not even tylenol) after that. Getting up and down out of bed required assistance for a day or so. But keep in mind my weight was 355lbs on a 5'2"frame So that was a lot of fat to be adjusting at one time. After 5-6 days I was getting around pretty good. -
Please Help!!!! 5 days out....
currysusan123 replied to Val_Martin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I was 3 days out, my stomach would spasm & cramp with each swallow. I went back to dr. who gave me some meds to disolve under my tongue. It was stomach muscle relaxers. They also gave me UNJURY chicken flavor protein suppliment. It was heaven to me. I also struggled and still do with getting liquids and protein in. Just know that as your stomach heals, it will get easier. I remember thinking that if it didn't get better then I had just totally ruined my quality of life.....but guess what... IT GOT BETTER. Hang in there. You'll be fine. -
Round 2, wish me luck
currysusan123 replied to pcindy's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hang in there! I too know how it feels to have your body let you down. I went thru pre op tests in October when I was trying to have the lap band. My white cell count was too high for surgery. After months of heavy antibiotics I was sent to the hemotologist at lsu shreveport. The ran all kinds of cancer tests and found no reason for high count. Long story short, if I had not had this set back which was out of my hands, I would have never found out about the sleeve. All things happen for a reason....I know my wait was ment to be. Also, I STRONGLY recommend sticking to the low fat pre-op diet. I only half way did mine and enjoyed several days of fatty meals just before surgery.... WELL this caused my surgery to take 3 hours instead of 1.5 hours because my liver was so hard to deal with. Also the recovery room time was doubled. So my best advise is to STRICTLY follow the low fat diet. You may never know how important it is (unless you mess it up). -
Question about weight loss slowing!
currysusan123 replied to Merryx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date was July 7 so I'm a week ahead of you. I think your weight is right on target. I have lost 28 lbs. I just went thru over a week of not losing. I would say dont sweat it. Your body is still adjusting. For myself, my period came a week early (even on the pill) so I guess I can get ready for the second week in a row this week. Anyway, I wouldn't be concerned for another couple of weeks. Besides at 600 - 800 calories a day, you have to lose. By the way, congrats on the Water consumption. I can only seem to get in 1/2 that amount. -
What is the most powerful, gut-exploding laxative I can buy OTC?
currysusan123 replied to Donna4545's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the opposite problem, but my sister is always stopped up. She has recently been "cured" by taking a daily dose of milk of magnesia. This is also what my surgeon recommended (but I surely don't need it). -
Cost of vertical sleeve
currysusan123 replied to applegirl's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I paid 12,900 cash plus 250 for psych evaluation and 250 consultation in Monroe, LA. I don't know what the insurance price would have been. -
What surgery can i tell people i've had instead of telling them about the sleeve?
currysusan123 replied to jemmacahill's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I realize it's been a while since original post, but I feel inclined to add my opinion anyway. I have NO secrets when it comes to my journey. I have over 200 lbs to lose. Everyone I know thinks the surgery is the last resort for me and I may die soon without it. I have tried to have some sort of wls for over 10 years, but something always happens that makes it impossible. I am 8 days from surgery now and I pray that preop work allows me to have surgery. I have been SO open about my journey that everyone also knows that I have painstakingly saved the 12,900.00 CASH for the surgery. They also know that my husband just got a loan we cant afford at $20,000.00 to buy a boat, subconsciously trying to sabbatage my dream. So as you can see my life is an open book. I have found that people have been so worried about my health for so long that they are releived that my solution is about to take place. But if you still want an excuse, a friend of mine is telling people she had a bladder tack. -
VENTING--- so don't read unless you mind me bitching!
currysusan123 commented on knrpick's blog entry in Blog 68701
Our husbands must be sharing the same brain. I have wanted gastric bypass for over 10 years. I am now only $900 away from saving enough (also using tax refund) for lap band. My husband has gone on a spending spree lately including hunting gear, wide screen tv, monster deck around pool. Now he is talking about building a shed, and painting his truck. He blew up this evening at the mention of me being close to my money goal. He said all he does is work to pay bills, He never gets to relax... he makes nooooo sense. He doesnt want me to have the surgery, and is pitching a fit because he doesn't want to spend tax money on it. Sorry for venting ontop of your vent. but I thought you could laugh knowing that you are not alone with your controlling husband. grrrrrr
