Lap Band Surgery Day Stories
abingdongirl replied to pennyt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded August 5th, my original date was August 4th, but there was a problem with the OR after I was all set up to go. Well now take two, back in the pre-op room, they had me put on my little red bootie, air boots for my calves, and another heprin shot in the arm, because the doctor doesn't like anything around the stomach while he is working, that really stung, my husband and three of my children were present with me, we joked an laughed while the anesthesiologist was in the room explaining that she was giving me "happy juice" then they wheeled me out and the last thing I remember is them blowing up the bed under me and then waking up in recovery, I kept going in and out, but I noticed the time was longer than it was suppose to be, I went in at 10:45 and woke up at 1:45pm in some pain, the nurse joked and said you are a lightweight meaning it doesn't take much pain meds to relieve my discomfort. then they moved me to my room, it was there my husband told me he spoke to Dr. Singh and he did find a hiatal hernia that he had to repair, and there was a lot of adhesions from a hernia mesh repair I had done two years ago. I did the flouroscope it wasn't that bad I didn't drink the thin stuff because of my allergy to iodine, so they gave me a chalky stuff that was a lot thicker instead. but that got me some water for the rest of the evening. They kept me overnight just to see how the pain is controlled. I was able to walk right away I did 20 laps around the nurses station yesterday and 6 more before I went home today. so now I sit home my hubby's recliner, not hungry really hungry or thirsty right now but I keep drinking water to stay hydrated. All in all a good experience. -

Thanks everyone, well I came home and got a lot of things done I had on my "to do list" so that helped. I also took a nice long nap, I feel better well one thing I found out was that I will be spending the night so I am better prepared for that too... But I figured another day of as much soup as I like:thumbup: I love soup so that will really help me through my liquid stage of all of this...

Had a hiccup in my surgery got there this morning, talked to all of the necessary people and low and behold the OR AC breaks therefore surgery tomorrow instead I am little bummed but I look at it as more time to get my to do list finished... -
OKay, no I am not that good, surgery was cancelled today because the OR Air Conditioner broke and condensation was everywhere, so I am now rescheduled for tomorrow at 11am, so take me off the August 4th list put me on for tomorrow... ughhh the frustration because I had the IV, Heprin and booties all ready to go...

Okay August Peeps, Anyone Else Scared?!?
abingdongirl replied to jennyr1222's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Mine is tomorrow and I am filled with all kinds of emotions. Wow, that was great information, I have had two lapriscopic surgeries in the past, and I have never suffered from the gas pains that everyone is talking about but I don't know if it is because of the area they are working on or what, I don't like pain, but I knew from those surgeries the first three days were the worse. I am nervous about the possibility of having a hiatal hernia as I I feel like that would be closer to when my tonsils were taken out which was a beast. I am on my 1 day pre-op of soft foods and liquids for today and off to surgery tomorrow at 10:45am. -

banded on july 29th 2009
abingdongirl replied to oneweekend's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You can always make a soup and drain off the juices for your broth. and sugar free jello is considered a clear liquid too... if you can have cream soups the campbells microwavable cups of soup are very thin consistency... hope that helps -
What do you wish someone told you ?
abingdongirl replied to rdasroo2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I spoke to a friend who told me about the gas, that was the worst part of eveything and don't sit on the phone right after surgery, because you tend to stay still and that is the worse thing to do, stock up on gas-x strips for immediate relief and phayzyme tabs... Two days till band date, I am glad you started this thread... -
Are co-workers going to notice?
abingdongirl replied to slufmuffin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have spoken to some people about me thinking of getting WLS at the time not sure which one to do and when it could happen was never discussed. So I figure those whom I have said something to will know, and those who don't won't... it is no big deal, I don't plan to lie about it but I don't plan to broadcast it either. My family knows and that is who is most important. -
OK, Who has an AUGUST surgery date??!!
abingdongirl replied to Jodi73's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OMG, I can't believe it is only 3 days away... I have not finished everything on my "To Do List" which was to clean my house, and put my clothes in order, "I have a Ton of Clothes" as well as help my children get ready for school starting soon. I am a school teacher, but we don't go back till the 24th so I should be good by then... I am so excited, we are cooking my foods for the liquid and mushie stages today and freezing them in the proper portions so all I have to do is take them out, and heat up... No Pre-op liquid diet but they did want us to try to lose 5/10 pounds but light eating... Today I figured I would test out one of each of my protien supplements to see if I like the taste... and making my broths is the first priority, I have 3/4 wks of liquids... for mushie stage I have (2 weeks) Split pea Soup cottage cheese (which I love) Protien pudding Black eye peas Mash potato egg salad without the bread of course tuna fish blended salamon cakes blended protien shakes and so on... So nervous... getting mixed support...:) -
How long did u wait
abingdongirl replied to jeanbeanie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went for my first appointment in March 2009, however, I had already completed the six month supervised diet with phentermine and ali with my primary doctor, along with the sleep study and everything, but for what ever reason couldn't get a hold of anyone for my nutritional consult or psych exam near me right away so I put it off and thought I could lose weight on my own... wrong... well June 20th 2009, I called around got my psych and nutrition appointment for the 29th and july 1st, paperwork sent to insurance on july 10th initially for Gastric bypass, then denied told only band covered... resubmitted for band on July 17th, Approved July 21st, surgery scheduled August 4th due to surgeon on vacation last week in July. it was all in all pretty quick, once I got my butt in gear. -
August 6th, 2008 Surgery Date????
abingdongirl replied to cutiew/booty's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am scheduled for August 4th, in Maryland. I am on a light diet three days prior at least not pure liquid.. Still testing out the protien supplements available so I figured I would start them on August 1st, that would give me some time to fixate myself on something. I have told a few people, mostly those I trust it is interesting because many people don't believe I was heavy enough to be put on the diet, however I have not told any co-workers and really don't plan to say anything to them I have a lot of food allergies so it is easy for me to say "oh I can't eat that". I am excited... is anyone making homemade broths or using store bought? I have been in the process of getting both so that I can have some at work and some at home. I took off 10 days from work so I figure that would be enough time to heal and get aclimated to my 4 week liquid life. I am a little concerned about the possibility of a hiatal hernia, not sure if I have one or not, never been tested... but I do have episodes of food getting stuck, and burping up food here and there, along with serious heartburn once in a while. I have been reading so much about the surgery my head is spinning... however, I am still ready to go thru with it... -
That is awesome, and what is great is that you can continue to see results with the band... I have started cutting out fast foods, but sodas are hard for me I love the fizz, but I know that will be a no no once I get banded... Great job:thumbup:

I just finished my pre-op appointment this morning got blood work and all completed, I haven't been put on a pre-op diet or anything just the usual don't eat after midnight stuff, I guess everyone is different. I am super excited and nervous at the same time. My husband and I have been planning the different broths to make to help me through the first three weeks of liquids, and food for the mushie stage too. My children are excited too. one week to go...:smile2: -
Introducing myself & My Story so far...

Congrats that is wounderful they approved you so quickly...:smile2: -
Hi, I am in the pre-op stage of getting my lap-band, I must admit it was not my first choice as I wanted to have the RNY, however my insurance will only cover the band, so right now I feel like I am forced to choose a method I don't totally agree with. My husband had the RNY, and so have my sister and cousin all with great sucess, however, my view is that I am settling for next best. I have been researching the band and how people have done with it over the past week, since the insurance company informed me of the change. I know I will be okay but I am concerned about the possibility of having the band replaced in five years, or any other surgeries as a result of this decision. I hope that is not the case, as I am scheduled for surgery in two in a half weeks and I am trying to wrap my head around the liquid diet and pureed food, I don't know how one cannot feel hungry while eating so little, I plan to go to more support group meetings to get a better idea of what to expect, please share good bad or indifferent. Thanks, Abingdongirl:redface:
