Dr Deol's patients: pre-op diet question
CoachBuckley replied to juno610's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi Juno I just had the band done with Dr. Deol on July 31. I was a bad case tho because my BMI was over 70 and Beaumont will not operate on a person over 500lbs. I was on the Garden Light (which is like Optifast) at the Unisource Comprehensive Weight Loss center for about 5 months. I lost 85lbs pre op so I could have the surgery done. She normally has her patients as it says in the handbook I have go on the Optifast for 6 weeks prior to surgery. Keep in mind the optifast is to prepare you for the liquids after surgery (which can suck) The program she has works if you follow it. If you are worried about feeling hungry don't be. The first 4-5 days are the worst while your body detoxes (lol) but after that you do not feel hungry. Your stomach is contantly full, you just have to tell your brain that!! If you have any more questions I will try to answer them for you!! -
Well everyone I got some good news. My doc says everything is going great!! I am eating right on, getting plenty of fluid, and she told me I could start exercising and lifting weights. Well as soon as she told me I could I went off and started lifting. I am sore today but I feel so good. I got on the scale at the docs and low and behold I broke my 100lb mark total and I have lost 15 lbs in about 2 weeks. The weight off me is such a nice feeling as my overhang is hanging farther than it ever has, I have skin folds now which is a pian but still a nice feeling. Seeing that I have lost 100lbs was such an accomplishment. It was my second milestone in a journey of 5. (5, 50lb losses) This can be done even tho the mushies are not my favorite soon soft solids are looming!!! Just remember be proud of yourselves, just getting to the surgery is an accomplishment!!

Mine was hilarious. I had 2 sessions the first one we went over my weight loss history and then I took a 166 question test that covered about 5 subjects. 1.Family 2.abuse 3.drugs/alcohol 4.religion 5.eating habits My favortie question was number 88 where it asked me (they were all true/false) I am answering this test truthfully T/F? When I got the results back I scored very high (you want to score between 65-80) on the religion part (100%). All she said was religion can be a helpful tool so if you ever feel depressed you may want to look for a religious belief. Hope this helps

Oh How I long for pizza!! My wife keeps eating all the good stuff. I sat in the drive thru at McDonalds last night pure torture!! I did not get anything and when we got home I went for a long walk while she ate!! My diet is close I am just kinda sticking with my protien drinks because they are confortable to me because I have been on them for 5 months lol.

You guys have one of the best surgeons doing the process. To answer a question I saw 5 doctors 3 who only did Ruen Y one in Port Huron and Dr Deol. Once you meet with her and Rebecca I guarantee (if you are serious about having this done) you will not want to go anywhere else. I was banded on July 31 by her at Troy Beaumont. Let me just tell you Beaumont is the best place to recover. They have new rooms on the 4th floor that are private, nurses that really care, and the surgery wasn't as painful as I thought. Let me give you fair warning however. If you are not 100% committed to doing this they will not let you get by. Dr Deol prepares you more than any other doctor could. They have avery strict process in place that you must follow and meet. I have to say, if this is the surgery for you by all means she is the best around!! I am 28 and I wanted the Lapband rather than the ruen Y. She put me through every ringer possible and I am glad she did. Now its 5 days post op and I have barely any pain, I am moiving around with no problems, and I feel fantastic (for not being able to chew any food lol) Congrats and I hope everything goes well for both of you at the meeting. Ask question after question, know everything you possibly can and see and talk with as many people as you can. It will make the process that much easier!!:clap2: -
Your most embarrassing fat moment (sad, funny, pathetic, turning points)

Well I have had many worst days so to speak. I work in a grocery store all the way in the back at the meat department. I was walking up to punch out and kids just say the darnest things "wow mommy his tummy is huge" After going to my pcp for over a year and getting weights in the 425-445 range, we decided it was time to see the surgeon. I scheduled my appointment and show up for the appointment where they put me on a scale. To my horro the 500lb scale was reading E's across the board. I went to the weight loss center and found out I was really 509.5lbs and I was to fat for the normal scales. I have so many fat stories I have come to the conclusion those stories have made me more resilliant and open to the surgery and the pain I am in from the surgery (3 days out) Just wanted to share a few of my horror stories -
First off thanks for all the support!! It is nice to hear other people who have food withdrawl as well. Well the tomato soup I have is from the protein diet I was on before I was banded. Its not really a tomato soup per say as a tomato flavored soup lol (they always have to put flavored like my chocolate flavored shake and my strawberry flavored etc...) So I am still using those to supplement my proteins as I want to keep the lean muscles I already have. I had tremendous sucess with this protein diet before surgery (85lbs+pre op) and both the surgeon and nutritionist said I could continue for my liquids portion of my phase I. I like the cream of tomato and the cream of chicken soups they have. Tomorrow I am going to try a shake. I have been doing a lot of popsicles and even treated myself to pudding pops!! I wish all of you the best!!

Well everyone I am officially banded!!! Ouch lol. I had a great stay at the hospital (except for the night nurse didn't respond to iv slipping causing my hand to expand to the point i could not make a fist) I feel better today. My doc said I was the easiest she had ever done!! No problems except when I got home lol. Th wife has decided to eat nachos in front of me. Its not that I want to taste the nachos because I am not in the least bit hungry, I just see and can smell them and they smell so good. I am drinking my cream of tomato soup protien soup watching the Detroit Tiger game and seeing how all of the July bandsters are doing. When I woke up a smile came to my face (I think because I woke up number one and it was finally over number 2) and then I couldn't help but shed a tear of joy. This has been the biggest test of my life to get to this point. When it is all said and done I cannot wait to see how much the July 06 group loses!!! Good luck to everyone!

Is there anyone in MI out there?
CoachBuckley replied to slenderella's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi mother!! I had discussions with my doctor about the medicines. He one of the best (and most well known) lipid disorder docs. He said they are still at least 10 years away from a safe "diet" pill that will work. I wanted a pill you know an easy fix to solve my problem. After talking to him I understand why people are willing to go under the knife. My old pcp did not agree with my decision of banding either, but I knew it was right for me. My advice is do what you feel comfortable with. Because for me 10 years is too long to carry 250+ extra lbs -

Well they put me on what they call the garden light diet. It consists of 5 "shakes" a day (high protien low fat and actually i found out how to make some of them taste like ice cream, shakes etc so it wasn't bad at all) and up to 200 calories of non starchy vegetables. Its amazing how hard it is to eat 200 calories of non starchy vegies in a day!! The vegies help for the chewing you miss. After going to the Dr. Deol yesterday I realized i am no longer super/super morbidly obese, now I am only super morbidly obese lol. Baby steps i guess. I work out usually 6-7 times a week doing resistence training and walking or swimming ( I have 2 bad knees all the docs said stay away from high impact) I cannot begin to describe to everyone how many times I wanted to skip the shakes and go to a fast food restaraunt. It is worth it now tho!! I have a total of 250lbs to lose and now with 85 gone before surgery its that much more motivation for rest. I will be on here more than ever after Monday lol not much else to do!! Good luck to everyone!! -

I am new here as well. I am scheduled to be banded on July 31, 2006. Only 5 more days :clap2: I am going thru Dr. Deol and it has been fantastic. I started out at 509.5 lbs :faint: . The worst day of my life January 31, 2006. Beaumont will not allow surgery if you are over 500lbs, so I was sent to the Unisource comprehensive weight loss center with Dr. Doyle. It was a tremendous experience. I have lost 85 lbs as of today (had my pre op with Dr. Deol today), and I feel fantastic. I just wanted to give you some background as I am now going thru it as well. Always need support!! Hope yours goes well!! -
Hello all July bandies!!! I will be bringing up the month here in Michigan with Dr. Deol. July 31, 2006, after a year and a half and 85lbs lighter, It is finally here. Its been a long journey thats only going to get better. Thanks to Dr. Doyle for helping me get the 85 off so far, and Dr. Deol for helping me after!!
